Boston is one of America’s oldest cities and is known for its rich his- tory and culture. From the early days of the American Revolution through the cultural and sporting events of today, the people of Bos- ton have been passionate about their city and proudly share that pas- sion with others. Just ask any Red Sox fan. Boston’s anime fans are no exception. In 2003, over four thousand people showed up to attend the first Anime Boston. Many more peo- ple wanted to come, but the Boston Fire Marshal made us turn them away. Last year, we expanded our space, but still had to cut off pre- registration a month early. This year, Anime Boston occupies nearly 100,000 square feet. We should finally be able to open our doors wide and welcome thousands more anime fans from the New England area and beyond. Anime Boston is a testament to the passion of anime fans. We’re here to celebrate that passion with you…whether it’s through watching anime screenings, meeting guests, wearing costumes, attending pan- els, singing karaoke, playing games, dancing, or shopping. On behalf of all our staff and volunteers, I would like to thank you for coming to Anime Boston 2005. I am happy to see you in Boston and hope you have as much fun at Anime Boston as the staff has had in putting it together for you. Sincerely, Convention Chairman PatrickAnime Boston Delahanty 2005 4 Anime Boston 2005 Yoko Guests of honor Blessed with an endearing, expressive sing- er’s voice and a dynamic range, Yoko was ISHIDA selected as the featured vocalist on Gene- on Japan’s Para Para Max CD series. From there, she emerged as one of the anime industrys’ most prolific and outstanding female singers, performing the memorable theme songs to series such as Pretear, A Little Snow Fairy Sugar, Ai Yori Aoshi, Petite Princess Yucie, Gunparade March, Ai Yori Aoshi~Enishi~ and Texhnolyze. Yoko’s first solo album, “sweets,” was unveiled in 2003, and had the unique distinction of being released both in Japan and the U.S. that same year to anime fans. In 2004, Yoko’s popularity skyrocketed even higher, as she performed the theme song to the new GAINAX series, This Ugly and Beautiful World and launched the “Hyper Yocomix” album, featuring popular anime songs set to a Eurobeat mix. Yoko was “discovered” once again, this time by a U.S. video game producer, who had at- tended her summer concert and presented her the opportunity to perform the ending theme song, “Foolish Dreams” on Vivendi Universal Games’ Red Ninja: End of Honor. When she’s not practicing in a studio, Yoko can be found as an assistant host for a popular radio broadcast program (Okui Masami Kiss 3) with friend and colleague Masami Okui. With her recent theme song performance for the new Ah! My Goddess TV series and her next anticipated album, “Yoko Ishida - All of Me”) set for release in Japan on March 2005 (and May 2005 in the U.S.), Yoko continues to be a stand out per- former/entertainer whose success can be directly linked to both her musical talents and her loyal fans. © GENEON ENTERTAINMENT, INC. © GENEON ENTERTAINMENT, Anime Boston 2005 5 Daisuke GUESTS OF HONOR Daisuke Moriyama is best known as the MORIYAMA creator of Chrno Crusade, one of the most popular manga serials featured in Comic Dragon and Dragon Age maga- zines. It provides historical and contextual background for the development of the vidding community, and explores the role of agency among this specialised audience community. Utilising semiotic theory, it offers a theoretical language for understanding the structure and function of remix videos.

In the United States this growth has been based on copyright infringement, where fans have subtitled anime series and released them as fansubs. In the absence of official releases fansubs have created the current popularity of anime, which companies can now benefit from. From the beginning the companies have tolerated and even encouraged the fan activity, partly because the fans have followed their own rules, intended to stop the distribution of fansubs after official licensing. The work explores the history and current situation of fansubs, and seeks to explain how these practices adopted by fans have arisen, why both fans and companies accept them and act according to them, and whether the situation is sustainable. Keywords: Japanese animation, anime, fansub, copyright, piracy Tiivistelmä Piratismia vai tuottavuutta: laittomat toimintatavat animen fanikäännöksissä Japanilaisen animaation eli animen suosio maailmalla on lyhyessä ajassa kasvanut räjähdysmäisesti.

There's absolutely nothing about that in the Bible.” “So how come everyone writes about it like it’s a big deal?” “Kirima-san! You know Kirima Seiichi always said not to believe what ‘everyone’ says!” “Fair, but… my dad wrote about this somewhere, right?” “No, he never did. I read this in a book by Malet.” “Kazuko, I swear you’re way smarter than my dad ever was.” “Th-that’s not true at all. But the point is, Cain may have killed his brother Abel, but he never felt guilty for it, and God forgave him. That’s all it says in the Bible. There was no lifelong burden like in the movie East of Eden.” “Wasn’t there a…sign? I thought he was marked in some way.” “Yeah, that part is from the Bible.” “So didn’t that lead to everyone pointing fingers at him? You’d think it would.” “That’s where everyone’s got it wrong. The mark God put on Cain was to prevent anyone from harming him because of his crime. Any injury inflicted on Cain would be paid back sevenfold.

  • 2. Case Study: Anime Music Videos
    2. CASE STUDY: ANIME MUSIC VIDEOS Dana Milstein When on 1 August 1981 at 12:01 a.m. the Buggles’ ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ aired as MTV’s first music video, its lyrics parodied the very media pre- senting it: ‘We can’t rewind, we’ve gone too far, . put the blame on VTR.’ Influenced by J. G. Ballard’s 1960 short story ‘The Sound Sweep’, Trevor Horn’s song voiced anxiety over the dystopian, artificial world developing as a result of modern technology. Ballard’s story described a world in which natu- rally audible sound, particularly song, is considered to be noise pollution; a sound sweep removes this acoustic noise on a daily basis while radios broad- cast a silent, rescored version of music using a richer, ultrasonic orchestra that subconsciously produces positive feelings in its listeners. Ballard was particu- larly criticising technology’s attempt to manipulate the human voice, by con- tending that the voice as a natural musical instrument can only be generated by ‘non-mechanical means which the neruophonic engineer could never hope, or bother, to duplicate’ (Ballard 2006: 150). Similarly, Horn professed anxiety over a world in which VTRs (video tape recorders) replace real-time radio music with simulacra of those performances. VTRs allowed networks to replay shows, to cater to different time zones, and to rerecord over material. Indeed, the first VTR broadcast occurred on 25 October 1956, when a recording of guest singer Dorothy Collins made the previous night was broadcast ‘live’ on the Jonathan Winters Show. The business of keeping audiences hooked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, promoted the concept of quantity over quality: yes- terday’s information was irrelevant and could be permanently erased after serving its money-making purpose.
