Idyllwild Town Crier, May 17, 2012 - Page 3 Outside Idyllwild By Bruce Watts Wildfl ower extravaganza … The late April rains and snow made sure that we would have a strong spring wild- fl ower bloom. Even though it was a drier and warmer winter season than normal (or is it the new normal), I am seeing lots of plants in bloombloom in towntown and, ofof course, course, the highhigh countrycountry will be starting to bloom soon as well. Besides the outstanding goldfi elds bloom in Garner Valley, I have seen one of the best Ceanothus blooms in a while with every bush covered in fl owers. You can spot many of the delicate blue fl owered Ceanothus on roadsides and on the lower sections of Deer Springs Trail. Growing along side the Ceanothus is one of the most A snowplant erupting through the cover of pine needles. common plants in Idyllwild the pink fl owered manzanita. Photo by Mike Reno Manzanita means “little apple” in Spanish and refers to Ceanothus blooming in Garner Valley the small, apple-like fruit. The small pink fl owers hang in clusters on the ends of the branches and are quite showy despite their diminutive size. There are different species of Manzanita and they range from small bushes to almost tree-size plants. At Lake Hemet, I saw many yellow turbans (Eriogonum pusillum), a buckwheat family member. They grow well in dry sandy soil around the lake. These two- to three-foot tall plants look almost leafl ess and the yellow fl owers grow in clusters at the end of the stems. Also at Lake Hemet, I have seen another common plant. The scarlet penstemon (Penstemon labrosus) grows in the same conditions as the yellow turbans. The trum- pet-shaped fl owers extend in rows on the vertical fl ower stalks. There are other species of the penstemon genus but the red-fl owered plants are the most commonly seen locally. Manzanita blooms Photos by Bruce Watts One of the smaller, less noticeable, plants blooming in town is miner’s lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata). This inconspicuous fl owers grow inside the red bracts. Brendan Steele’s consecutive-cut streak ended at two last week when he shot 72 and 79 for 151 total during the fi rst two days of The Players Championship on the TPC Sawgrass course at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., missing the cut by seven strokes. The native Idyllwilder’s stats hint at trouble hitting greens in regulation and long putts when he did, making scoring diffi cult, as it was the previous week in North Carolina.
