    VSS Enterprise’s, First Flight World’s First Commercial Spaceship Takes Inaugural Flight Mojave Air and Spaceport, Mojave, California Monday 22 nd March, 2010 Virgin Galactic announced today that its commercial manned spaceship, VSS Enterprise, this morning successfully completed its first “captive carry” test flight, taking off at 07.05 am (PST) from Mojave Air and Spaceport, California. The spaceship was unveiled to the public for the first time on December 7 th 2009 and named by Governors Schwarzenegger and Richardson. VSS Enterprise remained attached to its unique WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft, VMS Eve, for the duration of the 2 hours 54 minutes flight, achieving an altitude of 45,000ft (13716 metres). Both vehicles are being developed for Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, by Mojave based Scaled Composites. Founded by Burt Rutan, Scaled developed SpaceShipOne which in 2004 claimed the $10m Ansari X prize as the world’s first privately developed manned spacecraft. Virgin Galactic’s new vehicles share much of the same basic design but are being built to carry six fare paying passengers on sub- orbital space flights, allowing an out-of-the-seat zero gravity experience and offering astounding views of the planet from the black sky of space. Virgin Galactic has already taken around $45m in deposits for spaceflight reservations from over 330 people wanting to experience space for themselves. The first flight of VMS Enterprise is another major milestone in an exhaustive flight testing programme, which started with the inaugural flight of VMS Eve in 2008 and is at the heart of Virgin Galactic’s commitment to safety.

By providing routine access for research payloads to suborbital space, Virgin Galactic will expand current research capabilities beyond existing reduced gravity platforms such as drop towers and parabolic flights. SS2’s large capacity allows as much as 1,300 pounds (600 kg) of payloads per flight. Additionally, some flights may also include researchers themselves, able to interact with their experiments in real time.     For Immediate Release FAA Launch Permit Gives Virgin Galactic’s Space Vehicles the Green Light for Powered Flight SpaceShipTwo Set to Go for Heavy-Weight Glide Tests with Supersonic Flight Targeted for Year End MOJAVE, Calif. – (May 29, 2012) Virgin Galactic, the world’s first commercial spaceline, announced today that its vehicle developer, Scaled Composites (Scaled), has been granted an experimental launch permit from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its suborbital spacecraft, SpaceshipTwo, and the carrier aircraft, WhiteKnightTwo. “This important milestone enables our team to progress to the rocket-powered phase of test flight, bringing us a major step closer to bringing our customers to space,” said George Whitesides, president and CEO of Virgin Galactic. “We thank the FAA for their timely issuance of this permit, and for their responsible oversight of the test program.” Already, SpaceShipTwo and WhiteKnightTwo have made significant progress in their flight test program. With 80 test flights completed, WhiteKnightTwo is substantially through its test plan, while the more recently constructed SpaceShipTwo has safely completed sixteen free flights, including three that tested the vehicle’s unique “feathering” re-entry system. Additionally, ten test firings of the full scale SpaceShipTwo rocket motor, including full duration burns, have been safely and successfully completed. With this permit now in hand, Scaled is now authorized to press onward towards rocket- powered test flights. In preparation for those powered flights, SpaceShipTwo will soon return to flight, testing the aerodynamic performance of the spacecraft with the full weight of the rocket motor system on board. Integration of key rocket motor components, already begun during a now-concluding period of downtime for routine maintenance, will continue into the autumn.

TURYSTYCZNE LOTY CORAZ BLIŻEJ Finansowane przez Richarda Bransona przedsiębiorstwo Virgin Galactic poczyniło kolejny krok w stronę rozpoczęcia komercyjnych turystycznych lotów suborbitalnych. Biznesmen ogłosił w piątek 10 maja br., że działalność jego kosmicznego przedsiębiorstwa zostanie przeniesiona do portu Spaceport America w Nowym Meksyku. Miejsce to stanie się w ten sposób centrum załogowych lotów kosmicznych Virgin Galactic. Dotychczas większość prac realizowanych przez firmę Bransona prowadzona była na terenie Mojave Air & Space Port, które obsługuje wiele startupów sektora kosmicznego. Na terenie lotniska działa między innymi Scaled Composites oraz Stratolaunch Systems, Interorbital Systems oraz NASA. Port Mojave to także siedziba The Spaceship Company (TSC), firmy, której właścicielem jest właśnie Virgin Galactic. TSC jest odpowiedzialne między innymi za samolot WhiteKnightTwo oraz statek kosmiczny SpaceShipTwo, maszyny, które stanowią podstawę działalności kosmiczno-turystycznego biznesu Richarda Bransona. Zgodnie z piątkowym oświadczeniem przedsiębiorstwo TSC będzie nadal rozwijało flotę statków w Mojave, podczas gdy Virgin Galactic przeniesie większość działalności do Spaceport America. Lotnisko w Nowym Meksyku jest przede wszystkim w pełni przygotowane do obsługiwania pasażerów załogowych lotów kosmicznych. Jego budowa rozpoczęła się w 2006 i zakończyła 5 lat później w 2011 roku. Inwestycja pochłonęła łącznie 212 milionów dolarów.
