Bussey Department of History Western Kentucky University ABSTRACT Nashville, Tennessee, is known as the Athens of the South because pf its reputation as a center of learning . The city' s commitment to education goes back to the days of its founding as a village on the extreme Western frontier of the United States . In 1785, five years after Nashville was first settled, Davidson Academy, an advanced classical school , was established. At the same time, numerous private schools operated in the Nashville area, providing many of the region ' s children with a basic education. During the first quarter of the nineteenth century Nashville moved closer to becoming a major educational center . In 1806 Davidson Academy was rechartered as Cumberland College. Financial problems forced Cumberland College to suspend operation in 1816, but it reopened in 1825 and was rechartered as the University of Nashville the following year. In 1817 the Nashville Female Academy, which by 1860 was the largest and one of the most renowned schools for females in the nation, opened . Other private schools ix x served Nashville as well; most were simple grammar schools that taught the basics, but some advanced schools operated as well. During the l820s and l830s, there were some efforts to establish state supported schools for the poor, but they failed because many poor parents refused to send their children to these ·pauper's schools, · as the state supported schools were commonly called. By 1850 Nashville's educational landscape was on the verge of change. Financial difficulties forced the University of Nashville to close in 1850, but in 1855 it resumed operation after merging with the Western Military Institute and flourished until the Civil War . During the l850s, the Medical Department of the University of Nashville and Shelby Medical College opened . Both schools enjoyed great success, and by 1860 Nashville was second only to Philadelphia as a center of medical learning. Also, during the 1850s Nashville established a successful system of public schools for all the city's children. However, the Civil War would interrupt the city's progress in education. Despite Nashville's prominence in education, no comprehensive study of the city's antebellum educational development exists . Based on several primary sources, most of which are available in the Tennessee State Library and Archives, and numerous secondary sources dealing with antebellum Nashville, this thesis represents an attempt to describe antebellum Nashville's educational development. CHAPTER ONE EDUCATION IN FRONTIER NASHVILLE, 1780-1816 The seeds for Nashville's development as a major center of learning were planted during the period from 1780 to 1816 . From the outset, Nashville's founders made the education of their children a high priority. During the settlement's earliest days, educational efforts were frequently hindered by Indian attacks , the distance between students and schools , and a highly mobile population. However, parents, teachers, and students overcame these obstacles, and by the mid-1790s noticeable progress had been made. This progress was noted by Thomas Bailey, an Englishman who passed through Nashville in 1796 or 1797 . Bailey, who later served as the first president of the Royal Astronomical Society of London, stated that the town ' s residents "were rapidly improving in education.'" During the early years of the nineteenth century Nashville's educational development progressed more rapidly. By 1816 Nashville had a degree-granting college and numerous private schools. lAnson Nelson, "Annals of Nashville," 189, in the J. The collection consists of 2.52 linear feet of shelf space and numbers approximately 1,025 items and three volumes. These papers are the property of the Tennessee Historical Society and are available on microfilm at the Joint Universities Library and the Manuscript Division of the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Single photocopies of documents may be made for individual or scholarly purposes. However, for commercial use, or use that may constitute a copy right infringement, the user should obtain permission from the historical society. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection of papers of John Overton, numbering approximately 900 items, are composed of correspondence, two promissory notes, a Masonic document and a small diary of Nashville events listed yearly beginning in 1780, ending in 1851. The correspondence deals primarily with land cases of John Overton as lawyer and judge with some Tennessee politics intermingled.

BAILEY B.S., Austin Peay State University, 2006 M.A., Austin Peay State University, 2008 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2015 Abstract The thriving areas of development around the cities of Franklin and Nashville in Tennessee bear little evidence of the large battles that took place there during November and December, 1864. Pointing to modern development to explain the failed preservation of those battlefields, however, radically oversimplifies how those battlefields became relatively obscure. Instead, the major factor contributing to the lack of preservation of the Franklin and Nashville battlefields was a fractured collective memory of the two events; there was no unified narrative of the battles. For an extended period after the war, there was little effort to remember the Tennessee Campaign. Local citizens and veterans of the battles simply wanted to forget the horrific battles that haunted their memories. Furthermore, the United States government was not interested in saving the battlefields at Franklin and Nashville. Federal authorities, including the War Department and Congress, had grown tired of funding battlefields as national parks and could not be convinced that the two battlefields were worthy of preservation. Moreover, Southerners and Northerners remembered Franklin and Nashville in different ways, and historians mainly stressed Eastern Theater battles, failing to assign much significance to Franklin and Nashville. Throughout the 20th century, infrastructure development encroached on the battlefields and they continued to fade from public memory.

    Historic Markers (Legacy Map) Based on Historical Markers Numbe Civil War Year Erected Marker Text r Site? 6 1968 Loring's division of Stewart's Corps, Hood's Confederate Army of Tennessee, fought behind this TRUE stone wall Dec. 16, 1864. All Federal attacks were beaten back until the Confederate line was broken a mile to the west. The division retreated south through the hills toward Brentwood. 90 1992 Founded in 1915 as the successor to The Winthrop Model School at the University of Nashville, Peabody Demonstration School was established at this site in 1925 to utilize the teacher training methods developed at George Peabody College for Teachers. It became an independent institution in 1975 and was renamed University School of Nashville. 168 2018 Revolutionary War Pvt. John Alford built a two-room house on this land c. 1810, expanding it in 1812 and 1820. The Alford cemetery retains three markers that were placed as early as 1822. The c.1830 brick two-story Federal dwelling was home to James F. May, grandson of Knoxville founder Gen. James White. May purchased the land in 1837 and resided here until his death. James T. Granbery inherited and restored the house in 1939, and established Seven Springs Farm on the estate. 19 1969 Meharry Medical College, established in 1876 through the efforts of Dr. George W. Hubbard, Dr. William J. Sneed, and Samuel Meharry, is the only AMA Accredited, privately endowed, predominantly Negro medical school in the world. During its first 90 years of service, it trained more Negro physicians and dentists than any other institution.

The cornerstone laying ceremony took place on July 4, and on October J, Je45, Billy escorted his sister Alice at the Commencement of the Univer­ sity for the graduation of his brother James.

    Tennessee Civil War Trails Program 213 Newly Interpreted Markers Installed as of 6/9/11 Note: Some sites include multiple markers. BENTON COUNTY Fighting on the Tennessee River: located at Birdsong Marina, 225 Marina Rd., Hwy 191 N., Camden, TN 38327. During the Civil War, several engagements occurred along the strategically important Tennessee River within about five miles of here. In each case, cavalrymen engaged naval forces. On April 26, 1863, near the mouth of the Duck River east of here, Confederate Maj. Robert M. White’s 6th Texas Rangers and its four-gun battery attacked a Union flotilla from the riverbank. The gunboats Autocrat, Diana, and Adams and several transports came under heavy fire. When the vessels drove the Confederate cannons out of range with small-arms and artillery fire, Union Gen. Alfred W. Ellet ordered the gunboats to land their forces; signalmen on the exposed decks “wig-wagged” the orders with flags. BLOUNT COUNTY Maryville During the Civil War: located at 301 McGee Street, Maryville, TN 37801. During the antebellum period, Blount County supported abolitionism. In 1822, local Quakers and other residents formed an abolitionist society, and in the decades following, local clergymen preached against the evils of slavery. When the county considered secession in 1861, residents voted to remain with the Union, 1,766 to 414. Fighting directly touched Maryville, the county seat, in August 1864. Confederate Gen. Joseph Wheeler’s cavalrymen attacked a small detachment of the 2nd Tennessee Infantry (U.S.) under Lt. James M. Dorton at the courthouse. It is impossible to name every individual who impacted the successful completion of this study. I must mention Dr. Kurt Piehler, who sparked my interest in Tennessee’s first governor during my last year of undergraduate study at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Piehler encouraged me to research what historians have written about John Sevier. What I found was a man whose history had largely been ignored and forgotten. Without this initial inquiry, it is likely that I would have picked a very different topic to study. I am greatly indebted to Dr. Piehler. While an undergraduate in the history program at UTK I met a number of exceptional historians who inspired and encouraged me to go to graduate school. Dr. Bob Hutton, Dr. Stephen Ash, and Dr. Nancy Schurr taught me to work harder, write better, and never give up on my dream.     State of Tennessee Department of State Tennessee State Library and Archives 403 Seventh Avenue North Nashville, Tennessee 37243-0312 GEORGE WASHINGTON CAMPBELL (1769-1848) CORRESPONDENCE 1793-1833 Processed by: Harriet Chappell Owsley Archival Technical Services Accession Numbers: 1246; 1256 Date Completed: October 28, 1964 Location: IV-F-4 INTRODUCTION This collection of papers (Photostats primarily) of George Washington Campbell (1769-1833), lawyer, Tennessee member of Congress, 1803-1809, U.S. Senator from Tennessee, 1811-1818, Secretary of the Treasury (briefly), Minister to Russia, 1818- 1820, and, U.S. Claims Commissioner, 1831, were given to the State by his descendants. Five original letters written by nephews of G.W. Campbell were also deposited by descendants. The materials in this finding aid measures .42 linear feet. There are no restrictions on the materials. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the George Washington Campbell Correspondence may be made for purposes of scholarly research. SCOPE AND CONTENT This collection is composed of correspondence (Photostats and five original letters) of George Washington Campbell for the dates 1793-1833. The bulk of the material falls in the period 1813-1822 when Campbell was United States Senator, Secretary of the Treasury, and Minister to Russia. The letters are especially concerned with national and diplomatic problems involving the purchase of East Florida from Spain, diplomatic relations with Great Britain during the period of Jackson’s execution of Ambrister and Arbuthnot, conditions in France after the Revolution, treaties with European Countries, and subjects of national concern. His correspondents included four presidents – Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and James Madison.
