Foreword Art and design education are part of a comprehensive Pre-K-12 education for all students. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction continues its efforts to support the skill and knowledge development for our students across the state in all content areas. This guide is meant to support this work as well as foster additional reflection on the instructional framework that will most effectively support students’ learning in art and design through creative practices. This document represents a new direction for art education, identifying a more in-depth review of art and design education. The most substantial change involves the definition of art and design education as the study of visual thinking – including design, visual communications, visual culture, and fine/studio art. The guide provides local, statewide, and national examples in each of these areas to the reader. The overall framework offered suggests practice beyond traditional modes and instead promotes a more constructivist approach to learning. -

Kansas History: A Journal of the Central Plains 35 (Spring 2012): 2–25 2 Kansas History Northern Cheyenne Warrior Ledger Art: Captivity Narratives of Northern Cheyenne Prisoners in 1879 Dodge City by Denise Low and Ramon Powers n February 17, 1879, Ford County Sheriff W. D. “Bat” Masterson arrived at the Dodge City train depot with seven Northern Cheyenne men as prisoners. The State of Kansas was charging them with forty murders in what would later be identified as the last “Indian raid” in Kansas. In 1877 the government had ordered all Northern Cheyennes to move to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, which most of the tribe had found intolerable. A group of about 350 Northern Cheyenne men, women, and children escaped in September 1878. They Ofought skirmishes and raided throughout western Kansas, and eventually split into two groups—one under leadership of Little Wolf and one under Dull Knife (or Morning Star). The Little Wolf band eluded the U.S. Army, but 149 of those under Dull Knife were finally imprisoned at Camp Robinson in Nebraska.1 While army officials determined their fate, they remained in custody into the winter. They attempted to break out of captivity on January 9, 1879, and, after military reprisal, perhaps less than fifteen men remained alive. A few who escaped sought refuge at the Pine Ridge Agency in South Dakota. Military authorities sent most of the survivors back to Indian Territory except for seven men who were destined for trial in Kansas. The seven men arriving in Dodge City, a remnant of the Dull Knife fighting force, would face Ford County charges.2 Denise Low received a National Endowment for the Humanities Faculty Fellowship for completion of this article. -

Boren announced Thursday that the university has received one of the most important private collections of Native American art in the country. The gift comes to OU from the private collection of James T. Bialac of Arizona. The multimillion-dollar collection of more than 3,500 works represents indigenous cultures across North America, especially the Pueblos of the Southwest, the Navajo, the Hopi, many of the tribes of the Northern and Southern Plains and the Southeastern tribes. Included in the James T. Bialac Native American Art Collection are approximately 2,600 paintings and works on paper, 1,000 kachinas and 100 pieces of jewelry representing major Native artists such as Fred Kabotie, Awa Tsireh, Fritz Scholder, Joe Herrera, Allan Houser, Jerome Tiger, Tonita Pena, Helen Hardin, Pablita Velarde, George Morrison, Richard “Dick” West, Patrick DesJarlait and Pop Chalee. “The university community is deeply grateful to Jim Bialac for this important and generous gift,” said OU President David L. Boren. “This collection will expose our students and people all across the country to some of the most important works of Native American art ever created. It will provide new insight into Native American culture. In addition, the collection will be an important source for art history students, including graduate students in OU’s Ph.D. -

Capps, Harold S. Colton, S. Cooper, Robert Fronske, Marc Gaede, Parker Hamilton, Lyndon L. Hargrave, Neil Judd, A.J. "Lex" Lindsay, P. Long, M. Middleton, T. Nichols, L. W. Smith, C. Turner, W.M. Wells, and Barton Wright. Organizational History: In 1959, the Photography Department and position of Photographer created by director Dr. E. B. Danson, with Parker Hamilton as MNA’s first Assistant in Photography, later that year promoted to Photographer. Prior to 1959, the photo archives were a part of the Publications Department but not under the management of a photographer. In 1960, a large-scale cataloging initiative of new and old prints, negatives, and slides was undertaken. A photography studio and cataloging room was established in Fleischman Hall (now Schaeffer) in 1965. An inventory was made of negatives in June 1969 which noted missing negatives. By the early 1980s the Photography Department became the Photo Archives, reflecting a shift in focus from active photography to preservation of and access to existing materials. An inventory of negatives was done again in February 1988 with notes made of missing negatives. The Photo Archives moved to the Library in 1995. In 2005, the Photo Archives ceased operation as a department, and staff photography became the responsibility of the Marketing Department while the care of materials and use requests were the responsibility of the Library staff. The Photo Archives were made the responsibility of the Archivist in 2008. -

The Macnider Ledger Book: Coloring the Plains Thomas Cleary A Blue and Black Horse (detail) The Macnider Ledger Book is a unique historical and artistic document. Drawn in the 1880s by several Sioux warriors, this book recalls Sioux life just before the onset of the Reservation Period. Largely illiterate and faced with an uncertain future, these men drew scenes from memory with the hopes of preserving their individual histories. The Macnider Ledger Book is their personal narrative of Plains life. That this document exists today is nothing short of a miracle. Decades of war, poverty and politics have caused many other ledger books to be lost or destroyed. The Macnider Ledger Book, with its many individual ledger drawings, is a fortunate exception. Ledger books were initially imported into the North American Plains by Anglo businessmen. Paper was scarce in the Plains. The purpose of these hardcover books – filled with sequentially numbered, lined pages – was to keep track of financial transactions. As the books dispersed into the Plains in the mid-19th century, the pages unexpectedly became utilized for an entirely different purpose. The Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapaho and Kiowa tribesmen acquired them and, with their western drawing implements, they began to illustrate important scenes from their lives. These books became biographical portfolios, flush with colorful drawings of galloping horses, courting Two Parasols (Page #188) episodes, camp scenes, heroic deeds and battle exploits. Bacone College COVID Policy 0262021 Update FINAL
August 26, 2021 Greetings from Bacone College! We are excited to welcome all students and employees back to campus for the 2021 Fall Semester. As we begin this new school year, it is Bacone College’s goal to promote health and safety in our learning and working environments so that our students can remain in full-time, in-person learning. To accomplish this goal, Bacone College’s President, Dr. Ferlin Clark, has determined it is necessary to implement the COVID-19 Policy attached hereto. While COVID vaccinations became available earlier this year—ensuring greater protections for those who choose to get vaccinated—the Delta variant of COVID-19 has significantly increased rates of transmission and serious illness for those who remain unvaccinated. Currently, 85% of Bacone College’s employees are fully vaccinated, however, only 25% of Bacone’s students are fully vaccinated. The low rate of vaccination among our student body, coupled with the current increase in Delta variant COVID cases, increases the likelihood that Bacone will have to adopt a stricter Policy at some point in the future, including, but not limited to, a potential move back to remote learning. In an effort to avoid more drastic measures, the attached COVID-19 Policy provides basic prevention strategies aimed at keeping our College community, as well as the surrounding communities and the tribal communities many of our students call home, safe and healthy. Bacone College’s Fall 2021 COVID-19 Policy builds upon the Medicine Wheel framework that guided our previous COVID-19 policies. Our Medicine Wheel framework is a circular, cyclical concept that is unending. -
