journal of jesuit studies 3 (2016) 415-436 brill.com/jjs “Bella festa si fa ncelu”: Jesuits and Musical Traditions in the Heart of the Mediterranean* Ignazio Macchiarella University of Cagliari [email protected] Roberto Milleddu University of Cagliari [email protected] Abstract Still today, in Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica, the three main islands of the western Medi- terranean, there is a great flourishing of orally transmitted devotional songs which can be traced back to the acculturation processes brought about by Jesuit missionaries in the early modern era. Adopting an ethnomusicological approach, our essay focuses on some significant case studies, aiming to contribute to the discussion about Jesuits and music both in a contemporary and in a historical perspective. On the one hand, we observe the special consideration given today to some widespread popular religious songs that are commonly regarded as “historical Jesuit heritage.” On the other hand, we investigate historical sources, looking for traces of past music practices and hints about the relationships between Jesuit missionaries and traditional musicians. Rather than provide definitive answers, our purpose is to raise questions about the inherent complexity of the interpretation of past musical practices, and about the thought-pro- voking interconnections between these practices and the variegated music scenarios of the present day. * Ignazio Macchiarella wrote the section titled “The Santuzza, the orbi, and the Jesuits”; Rober- to Milleddu wrote the sections “Deus ti salvet and Other Songs,” “The Jesuits and the People,” and “A Jesuit for Every Season.” The two authors jointly wrote the introductory paragraphs and the conclusion. LE CATALAN DANS LES PARLERS SARDES Michel Contini Université de Grenoble Le xiv siècle marque un tournant dans l’histoire de la Sardaigne qui, en 1297, jointe à la Corse, est Donnée comme fief à Jacques II D’Aragon, par le Pape Boniface VIII. Montgomery) To reach the rich core of the culture of Sardinia, one must sift through the layers of sediment left by the people that have lived their history on Sardinia's soil.The early chapters of the dissertation provide important cultural and historical background information for my analysis. But even in the light of the innumerable outside influences on Sardinia over the years, it would be incorrect to view the island’s culture as a chameleon that simply takes on any and all aspects of the currently dominating tribe of people because this assumes that the civilization of the island is completely devoid of its own long standing and very unique traditions. My dissertation examines one of the primary theatrical genres of Sardinia, the sacre rappresentazioni, and traces the origins of this genre through two different religious-based literary traditions of the island, the letteratura agiografica and the gosos , religious poetic compositions, performed through song and written in praise of the Lord, the Virgin Mary or the saints. -

Primeval ritual prayer was codified and handed down socially to become a deep-rooted feature of people‟s cultural behavior, so much so, that it may surface again several years later, in the face of death, danger, need, even in the case of relapse from faith and religious practice. Modes of prayer depend on religious experience, on relations between personal prayer and political action, between prayer and forgiveness, and between prayer and approaches to religions. Various forms of prayer exist, from the covert-hidden to the overt-manifest kind. How can they be investigated? How can one, for instance, explore mental prayer? These issues regard the canon of diffused religion and, therefore, of diffused prayer. Keywords: prayer; diffused religion; secularization The Idea of Diffused Religion “Diffused religion” is a concept that requires clarification [1]. In this article the term “diffused” refers particularly and not only to Italy and is approached in at least two ways. First of all, religion is “diffused” in that it involves vast sectors of the Italian population and goes beyond the simple limits of ecclesiastical religion; sometimes it is even in evident contrast with church religion and religious motivation (see, for example, the keen debate about the referenda on divorce and abortion generated within Italian Catholicism). -
