For the Fifth Sunday of Lent, the choirs sing sections of two Friday, April 5, 12:45 PM longer works which can be heard in completion on First Friday Organ Recital (March 30). At the Preparation, we hear a portion of Josef Olga Wong, University of Houston Rheinberger’s Stabat Mater. Rheinberger was a nineteenth- century German organist and composer, largely known for his Friday, April 19 sacred choral and organ music. He showed astounding musical 10:00 AM: with Schola Cantorum promise at a young age; at only seven, he was serving as organist 1:00 PM: Cor Jesu Choir Good Friday Tre Ore of a parish church, and his first composition was performed just a year later. Thursday, May 16, 12:45 PM Third Thursday Voice Recital At the Eucharist, the choirs offer a section of John Sanders’ set- ting of the Reproaches. Sanders was a twentieth-century English Catherine Goode, Soprano, Virginia Opera Emerging Artist composer, organist, and conductor. He served as organist at Gloucester cathedral from 1967 to 1994, and composed several sacred choral works. Beginning “O my people, what have I done to you?” the Reproaches (or the Improperia) are sung in observance of the Passion on Good Friday during the Adoration of the Cross. Sanders’ Reproaches are vivid and emotional, bearing the full weight of the text they convey. They will be heard in cathe- drals all around the world, including ours, on Good Friday.

Last weekend, the Co-Cathedral hosted Pueri Cantores, the official youth choir of the Catholic Church. Led by Dr. Timothy Westerhaus, over 200 children sang at the 5pm mass on Saturday!

Good Friday, April 19, 2019

At 10 AM on April 19, our Schola Cantorum will offer a choral Tenebrae service. Tenebrae is a form of the Liturgy of the Hours, and typically includes the morning prayers (Matins and Lauds) of the last three days of Holy Week. For our liturgy, we will combine these three liturgies into one, also a tradition. Our service will contain scripture readings from the book of Lamentations; choral psalms, and responses in English to each reading set by Canadian composer Healy Willan (1880-1968).

At 1:30 PM on Paril 19, our Tre Ore observance, traditionally the three hours between noon and three will begin at the conclusion of the University of St. Thomas’s Stations of the Cross. This year Cor Jesu and the Schola Cantorum continue the theme of the Cross, singing the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) of Franz Liszt (1811-1886). This accompanied version of the Stations for choir and organ or piano is rich and refined, and features several members of our Schola Cantorum as soloists. It also includes some ar- rangements of chorales that you will surely recognize! Interestingly, Via Crucis dates from after the time the virtuosic Liszt took minor priestly orders. Our USCCB offers several mediations on the Via Crucis: http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/stations- of-the-cross/index.cfm

Finally, our Tre Ore will also feature Josef Rheinberger’s Stabat Mater, a highly devotional and elegant setting for choir and organ. Thank you for joining us in song, both on Sundays and during Holy Week! - Dr. Crista Miller, Director of Music and Cathedral Organist

April 7, 2019: 5th Sunday in Lent Jesus Brings Forgiveness This Week’s Gospel: John 8:1-11 A Woman Caught in Adultery All Sessions begin promptly at 9 am with Opening Prayer. See You There!!

Connecting GOSPEL and DOCTRINE Jesus Forgives and Stands With Us

In Sunday's Gospel, Jesus urges the Pharisees, who are the teachers of the Law, to help other people grow rather than condemn them. These teachers bring to Jesus a woman whom they have caught in adultery. The Law says both a man and a woman caught in adultery should be put to death. However, in this case, only the woman faces the blame and punishment. Jesus stands by her. [The woman caught in adultery is just one of the sinners, outcasts, and tax collectors with whom the teachers think Jesus spends too much of his time. Jesus shows us God’s love for everyone by standing with the poor and outcast people of his time. “During his public life Jesus not only forgave sins, but also...reintegrates sinners in the community of the People of God from which sin had alienated or even excluded them.” (CCC, 1443) (Source: Pflaum) Left alone with the woman, Jesus asks where the accusers have gone. With no one remaining to condemn the woman, Jesus (the one who truly is without sin) sends the woman on her way, refusing to pass judgment on her and exhorting her to avoid future sin. Jesus' response to those who accuse the woman is more than a caution to us about making judgment of oth- ers. It is a profound lesson in divine mercy and forgiveness. As sinners, we are all unworthy to judge the sins of others and we would stand convicted by God for our transgressions. Yet Jesus, the one without sin and thus our judge, offers us who are sinners his mercy and forgiveness. Redeemed by Jesus' com- passion, we are sent to sin no more and to live in Family Connect Day: Holy Week, God's love and peace. (Source: Loyola Press) Holiest Week of the Christian Year! Dear Parishioners and others who contribute to the Co-Cathedral: Above is an update on our parish finances. In some ways, we are doing well. But remember, we had cut back severely on our expenses, including staff, for this budget. Though it appears we have a surplus, that does not take into account the new microphone repair bill of $31,411 which wipes out that surplus. Plus, we have so many other expenses that we are holding off. For those who are contributing to the parish, DSF and the Ignite Campaign, thank you. For those whom might be contrib- uting only to the parish and not to DSF or the Ignite, thank you for your contributions. But I ask you to make an extra effort to increase your contributions. And for those who are not contributing at all, I challenge you to begin to contribute regularly and sacrificially. We can do so much more to spread the Gospel if everyone contributed sacrificially. I ask everyone to make an extra sacrificial contribution for Easter, if possible. Please remember also our Easter Flower Fund. Please be generous. Thank you. Fr. Lawrence W. Jozwiak Pastor / Rector
