Attendance was a little slow at the 10am beginning because of the cooler weather but it picked up as conditions improved, said Sarah Kirkpatrick of Hospice Tairawhiti. Mayor Rehette Stoltz attended, as did newly-elected Gisborne district councillor Isaac Hughes, who sold tickets for the spinning wheel. Ms Kirkpatrick said many people stayed on for the lolly scramble held near the end of the three-hour event. Hospice Tairawhiti sold more strawberries and ice cream than in previous years, thanks to generous support from Pak’nSave and major sponsor Advanced Trees Solutions. Ms Kirkpatrick did not yet know how much money had been raised but was sure the fundraiser had been an success. The public can also support Hospice Tairawhiti through the CAREFULLY DOES IT: Lamaya Tamatea Remembrance Tree at the Farmers concentrates hard on keeping her strawberry store by buying a Christmas bauble from falling off during one of the Strawberry for $10. About 80 people attended. Among those honoured was Mr Marshall himself. “It was very humbling to be acknowledged,” he said. The centre provides counselling and social work services for men, with the aim of contributing to positive change for them and their whanau.
