MTV UK TO INCLUDE SNAPCHAT IN SOCIAL STRATEGY FOR SERIES 6

The latest series of MTV UK’s hit reality show, Geordie Shore, will incorporate the photo messaging application SNAPCHAT as part of its digital marketing campaign, believed to be the first time a television show has used the social media tool to distribute exclusive content and drive audience engagement.

To create buzz and raise awareness ahead of the premiere of the sixth season of Geordie Shore on 9 th July , MTV UK has kicked off its first ever Snapchat initiative urging fans who follow its branded profiles on social media to add ‘MTVGeordieShore’ to their Snapchat accounts.

From 25th June, MTV will send out exclusive photographs and videos from its own Geordie Shore Snapchat account directly to fans’ smartphones, giving them a sneak peek into the ‘cheekier side’ of the sixth series.

“Strategically for this campaign, Snapchat completely lends itself to the creative concept for Series 6, offering us a direct marketing route to our fans by reaching them on their most beloved devices. Providing even more exclusive and irreverent content to our fans gives them immediate access to all the need-to-know series information, allows us to tease storylines and more interestingly, use the platform as a means of driving real time tune-in reminders in a period where TV viewing habits are ever-changing” said Jo Bacon, Vice President of Marketing, Creative and Publicity for MTV UK. “MTV has consistently found innovative ways to promote Geordie Shore via social media, turning it into one of the most social programmes on UK television, with millions of followers and fans across various platforms.”

Complementing the theme of the Geordie Shore on-air campaign, which launched 18 th June and centres around a lone mobile phone left on the beach (providing one lucky finder with access to the Geordies’ holiday snaps) fans will be able to use their Snapchat accounts to view pictures the cast have taken while on their travels….but they have to be quick!

As well as sending fans exclusive content, MTV will host exclusive Geordie Shore competitions on Snapchat, offering viewers the chance to win a variety of prizes. To be in with a chance of winning, fans will be asked to take a screen shot of selected photos seeded on Snapshot and send it to the account, @MTVGeordieShore.

Other uses of social media to promote the sixth series of Geordie Shore will include a live Twitter link-up between fans in the UK, Australia and New Zealand watching the live transmission of episode one (7am Australia time, 9am New Zealand). Using #GeordieFan, viewers in all 3 countries will be able to connect with fellow Geordie fans on the other side of the world and talk about what they think of the Geordies’ exploits in Australia in realtime. The link up will be promoted on-air with continuity in all 3 countries and across MTV Geordie Shore’s social media profiles.
