NEWS & NOTES

Dear families: Happy fall! Thank you for welcoming me to the Candor Central School District community. It is my goal to work together with our students and their families to keep in good health throughout the school year. Cold/Flu season is now upon us. I will encourage our students to practice good hand hygiene, maintain good sleep habits, drink plenty of water, and eat a balanced diet. If children are ill please allow them adequate time to recover before returning to school. In addition to keeping themselves well, we want to help our students learn to prevent the spread of illness to others. Please talk to your children about good hygiene practices such as hand washing, covering during a cough and resting when they are not well. Our school policy asks the following in regards to illness and returning to school:

 Students are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reduction medications.  Students are free from vomiting or loose stools for 24 hours after gastrointestinal illness.  If your child’s illness distracts them from learning they may need more time to rest. Please contact the health office if you have questions or concerns. For the most up to date surveillance of this year’s flu data please refer to the Center for Disease Control at www.cdc.gov. Thank you and well wishes for a healthy fall, Nurse Jill Elementary School Nurse

We have had a great start to the school year with new programs and opportunities for our students. We are seeing and hearing great things! Annual Reviews and Reevaluations will be held, primarily on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning immediately after the New Year. We look forward to sharing the progress of all of our students and discussing ways we can better support them. Your input is critical and very much appreciated. If you are unable to make the meeting in person, we can always conference you in, just let us know! Best wishes for a warm and healthy winter! FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

It is hard to believe we are 10 weeks into the school year! We are off to a great start, with the 7th graders transitioning nicely into the building and the seniors inching closer to graduation. We had a great fall sports season, and we are looking forward to an equally exciting winter sports season. The BOE has approved the creation of two new and exciting clubs in the high school, the Candor Public Re- lations Club and the Candor Select Choir. I observe many students taking advantage of after-school extra help time provided Monday through Thursday. I am always pleased to see students utilizing the resources and programs we have in place, as well as facilitating the creations of new ones! I recently attended the National Career Pathways Network Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. The keynote speaker at this conference was the CEO for The Center for Work Ethic Development, Mr. Josh Davies. Mr. Davies shared seven strategies to improve work ethic at school, which I have already dis- tributed and discussed with my teachers. He also shared some information that is very important and relevant for parents to know. Mr. Davies stated that the most effective means of building work ethic is giving kids chores! The earlier children do chores, the more successful work ethic is developed. He shared that social media consumes more attention from children than ever before, often sending messages contrary to hard work. Maybe the most surprising and disturbing statistic was that the typical parent is spending less than 15 minutes a week of meaningful dialogue with their kids! With both kids and adults spending signifi- cantly more time focused on technology, communication between parents and children is suffering. I took away from this the importance of creating time during the day when technology is “off limits.” At the dinner table, tablets & phones are not allowed at my house, and we have conversations regarding whatever is relevant in their lives at the time. We have always had chores for our kids, but sometimes my wife and I are guilty of just doing it ourselves if they did not do them or gave a half-hearted effort. SORRY KIDS, NOT HAPPENING ANY MORE! The school has our children 7 hours a day for 180 days each year, but we as parents have them for the rest, which is clearly the vast majority of the time. We as parents play the key role in developing and nurturing the work ethic our children will need to be successful in the future. With a combined best- effort approach at school as well as at home, we will be creating a culture, which will give students the best opportunity to develop future success skills As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I hope you have a safe and enjoyable holiday season!

FROM THE ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Families,

It has been a great first 10 weeks of school! One of the biggest highlights in the elementary school has been our Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum. The students, faculty and staff did a wonderful job embracing our first Super Strength, Mindfulness. We all found ourselves using strategies to help us be calmer and more present. At the end of October, we moved on to our next Super Strength, Growth Mindset. Growth Mindset is the belief that you can get better at anything with hard work and practice.

You might be asking yourself how you can help your child develop a Growth Mindset at home. One way we can support our children is in the way that we praise them. It is important to praise the process instead of telling children how smart or talented they are. It is a child’s effort, hard work and practice that allows them to reach their full potential. As difficult as it may be to see our children fail, sometimes this is when they learn the most. When children have the opportunity to work through a difficult task and eventually break through and solve it, it is a powerful experience! Thank you for your continued support on the home front as we continue to provide opportunities in areas that we believe are essential to every child’s success.

Thank you to all who attended Open House. We had a great turnout and it is always wonderful to see the pride in the children as they show their families around the building. Thank you for those who visited the Bake Sale as well. We were able to raise over $300 for the Student Activity Fund. The funds are used to purchase materials for special events throughout the school year.

Thank you for your participation in Parent/Teacher Conferences. Our efforts in creating and maintaining a partnership to ensure that students have a strong support system in place was evident during Parent/Teacher Conferences.

As always, please reach out to your child’s teacher or myself if there is anything we can do to support your child in reaching their full potential. Thank you for the continued support. I feel extremely lucky to be a part of this wonderful community!

Sincerely, Mrs. Volpicelli

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION

Dear Candor Families, I hope this finds you doing well and I am guessing that by the time you read this, you will have adjusted to Daylight Savings Time. :) The beginning of this school year seems to have gone by rather quickly, with many learning opportunities, activities and events filling the days. The teachers have been busy not only with day-to-day lessons, but they have spent the first part of the year reviewing content standards, assessment data, curriculum, and their current practices. As a result of our curriculum conversations, teachers are finding ways to incorporate the 4Cs (Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creative Problem-solving) into their instruction, increase work with vocabulary and encourage more reading. Here are a few suggestions for how you can help with vocabulary work at home…

See It, Say It, Write It If your child comes across a word in a book and asks you how to pronounce it, encourage him to repeat the word out loud after you say it. Similarly, if your child hears a new word in the course of conversation that is unfamiliar, spell the word out for him and have him write it down on a piece of paper so that he can see the word.

Read Daily Books are the number one way to expose kids to a richer vocabulary. As often as possible, read books with your child. When she comes to a word that she does not know, give your child a quick kid-friendly definition and continue reading. When you finish reading the story, go back to the word again and ask her if she remembers how to say it.

New Words Are Everywhere Help your child build her vocabulary by taking her to new places and exposing her to different ideas. Visit your local zoo or the nearest museum and have your child describe the various animals and exhibits that she sees. Take your child along with you as you run off to the bank, the grocery store, or the post office, and see what new words you can discover.

These tips are not only for use with elementary students. Our Junior High and High School students are faced daily with new vocabulary in a variety of classes. Any and all support will help our children to be successful today and beyond.

As always, thank you for all you do to support your children and our school community.

Respectfully, Mrs. Nichols

NEWS & NOTES

Each year in late September approximately 240 students are notified that they are selected to participate in the Zone 3 NYSSMA Conference Area All-State music groups. The All-State experience begins with a music educator, his or her student, and an accompanist spending countless hours preparing a NYSSMA solo which must be selected from repertoire lists in the current manual. Last spring, over 6,500 students from six counties prepared solos for evaluations in the hope of being selected. This fall, Lilly Hobi and Isabella Porras received high scores on their evaluations and were chosen to participate in the NYSSMA Zone 3 Area All State Junior High Mixed Chorus.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWS

Pizza Pizza – come and get it! We will make and sell frozen pizzas (ready to bake) to our local community during the first few weeks of December, and they will be available for pick up at the high school (or delivery if arranged with the NHS student) on Friday, February 1st, just in time for Super Bowl Weekend! We hope you are able to purchase and enjoy one of our freshly made pizzas!

The Selection Process for future members will begin in December and will be completed by the end of February 2019. It will culminate with the Induction Ceremony March 7, 2019, at 6:30 pm in the high school auditorium. The scholastically eligible students will receive a letter and application from Ms. Westervelt prior to the holiday break. Students in grades 10 – 12 are eligible to apply if their overall GPA is at least 87%. If the student chooses, they can submit their application to be further evaluated on the three additional criteria of leadership, character, and service. The selection process uses a uniform point system, guided by a very specific rubric. The use of an objective and fair system for selection is our highest priority. All students who are eligible and apply will be notified of their selection to be a member of the club, through receiving a letter via the USPS mail, at least a week prior to the induction ceremony.

The National Honor Society is focusing on multiple community service projects this year. We will host two blood drives again this year. One will be on December 6, 2018, and the second on March 20, 2019, both in the high school auditorium between 7:45 am and 1:00 pm. The public is welcome to donate, after approval through signing in and obtaining a visitor’s pass from the high school office. We participated in our annual roadside cleanup throughout the village of Candor in October. For the sixth year in a row, we are offering enrichment activities to the sixth grade students at the end of their school day. Each member has chosen an activity that they are interested and knowledgeable in, that they can teach. We are very excited about this opportunity to teach things such as how to play the ukulele, chess, holiday craft making, holiday cookie decorating, teaching about Spain, Italy and Brazil, EMT and the Candor Emergency Squad, making slime, and a theater/acting lesson.
