  • Sri Ramakrishna's Background and Mission
1 1. Millennial Expectations at the Time of His Birth 2. Descriptions of Ramakrishna by the People Who Knew Him 3. His Background and Orientation 4. His Mission and Teachings 5. Divine Visitations 6. Holy Men and Women, and Religious Leaders He Met ---------------------------------------------------------- I. Sri Ramakrishna’s Background and Mission 1. Millennial Expectations at the Time of His Birth Swami Saradananda explained that when religion is in an impoverished state, motivated by loving compassion the Avatar [Divine Incarnation] assumes a human body for the good of humanity. They appear when the forces of atheism, agnosticism, and materialism are predominant. “The Avatar then realizes that the purpose of his birth is to reestablish religion. Again, whatever is necessary to fulfill that goal comes spontaneously to the Avatar.... The eternal, universal religion declines with the passage of time. Out of compassion for human weakness, He takes a human form and again puts humanity on the spiritual path. As there cannot be an effect without a cause, so God in His lila [Divine play] never assumes a human body without the purpose of removing the sufferings of humanity. When such suffering affects every part of society, God’s infinite mercy crystallizes and induces Him to appear as a world teacher.”1 Furthermore, Saradananda tells us of the perplexing state of affairs in India at the time of Ramakrishna’s birth, 2 “The West brought about a radical change by influencing the fundamental ideals that had guided the individual and national lives of India from time immemorial...
