Clavaria diverticulata, Clavulinopsis dimorphica and Clavulinopsis imperata are new species, and Clavaria gibbsiae, Clavaria fumosa and Clavulinopsis helvola are reported for the first time for the country. Illustrations of the basidiomata and the microstructures are provided for all taxa, as well as SEM images of ornamented basidiospores which occur in Clavulinopsis helvola and Ramariopsis kunzei. A key to the Clavariaceae of Brazil is also included. Key words: clavarioid; morphology; taxonomy Introduction Clavariaceae Chevall. (Agaricales) comprises species with various types of basidiomata, including clavate, coralloid, resupinate, pendant-hydnoid and hygrophoroid forms (Hibbett & Thorn 2001, Birkebak et al. 2013). The family was first proposed to accommodate mostly saprophytic club and coral-like fungi that were previously placed in Clavaria Vaill. ex. L., including species that are now in other genera and families, such as Clavulina J.Schröt.

  • Clavaria Miniata) Flame Fungus
A LITTLE BOOK OF CORALS Pat and Ed Grey Reiner Richter Ramariopsis pulchella Revision 3 (2018) Ramaria flaccida De’ana Williams 2 Introduction This booklet illustrates some of the Coral Fungi found either on FNCV Fungi Forays or recorded for Victoria. Coral fungi are noted for their exquisite colouring – every shade of white, cream, grey, blue, purple, orange and red - found across the range of species. Each description page consists of a photo (usually taken by a group member) and brief notes to aid identification. The corals are listed alphabetically by genus and species and a common name has been included. In this revision five species have been added: Clavicorona taxophila, Clavulina tasmanica, Ramaria pyrispora, R. watlingii and R. samuelsii. A field description sheet is available as a separate PDF. Coral Fungi are so-called because the fruit-bodies resemble marine corals. Some have intricate branching, while others are bushier with ‘florets’ like a cauliflower or broccolini. They also include those species that have simple, club-shaped fruit-bodies. Unlike fungi such as Agarics that have gills and Boletes that have pores, the fertile surface bearing the spores of coral fungi is the external surface of the upper branches. All species of Artomyces, Clavaria, Clavulina, Clavulinopsis, Multiclavula, Ramariopsis and Tremellodendropsis have a white spore print while Ramaria species have a yellow to yellow-brown spore print, which is sometimes seen when the mature spores dust the branches. Most species grow on the ground except for two Peppery Corals Artomyces species and Ramaria ochracea that grow on fallen wood. Ramaria filicicola grows on woody litter and Tree-fern stems.

A checklist of clavarioid fungi (Agaricomycetes) recorded in Brazil ANGELINA DE MEIRAS-OTTONI*, LIDIA SILVA ARAUJO-NETA & TATIANA BAPTISTA GIBERTONI Departamento de Micologia, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Av. Nelson Chaves s/n, Recife 50670-420 Brazil *CORRESPONDENCE TO: [email protected] ABSTRACT — Based on an intensive search of literature about clavarioid fungi (Agaricomycetes: Basidiomycota) in Brazil and revision of material deposited in Herbaria PACA and URM, a list of 195 taxa was compiled. These are distributed into six orders (Agaricales, Cantharellales, Gomphales, Hymenochaetales, Polyporales and Russulales) and 12 families (Aphelariaceae, Auriscalpiaceae, Clavariaceae, Clavulinaceae, Gomphaceae, Hymenochaetaceae, Lachnocladiaceae, Lentariaceae, Lepidostromataceae, Physalacriaceae, Pterulaceae, and Typhulaceae). Among the 22 Brazilian states with occurrence of clavarioid fungi, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Amazonas have the higher number of species, but most of them are represented by a single record, which reinforces the need of more inventories and taxonomic studies about the group. KEY WORDS — diversity, taxonomy, tropical forest Introduction The clavarioid fungi are a polyphyletic group, characterized by coralloid, simple or branched basidiomata, with variable color and consistency. They include 30 genera with about 800 species, distributed in Agaricales, Cantharellales, Gomphales, Hymenochaetales, Polyporales and Russulales (Corner 1970; Petersen 1988; Kirk et al. 2008). These fungi are usually humicolous or lignicolous, but some can be symbionts – ectomycorrhizal, lichens or pathogens, being found in temperate, subtropical and tropical forests (Corner 1950, 1970; Petersen 1988; Nelsen et al. 2007; Henkel et al. 2012). Some species are edible, while some are poisonous (Toledo & Petersen 1989; Henkel et al. 2005, 2011). Studies about clavarioid fungi in Brazil are still scarce (Fidalgo & Fidalgo 1970; Rick 1959; De Lamônica-Freire 1979; Sulzbacher et al.

Ingleborough NNR Waxcap Grassland Survey January 2018 Ref: NEFU2017-243 Author: A.McLay Checked: Dr A.Jukes Natural England Field Unit CONTENTS Background 3 Introduction 3 Survey methodology 4 Survey results 4 Site evaluation 15 Recommendations 21 References 22 Appendices - Appendix 1. Location of units 23 - Appendix 2. List of non-CHEGD spp. 25 - Appendix 3. Grid locations for species 26 Appendix 4. Additional photographs 27 2 Introduction The term “waxcap grassland” was coined relatively recently to describe semi-natural grassland habitats containing distinctive assemblages of fungi, including waxcaps. Waxcaps are a group of fungi characterised by having thick waxy brittle gills, often bright colours and a preference for growing in unfertilised pastures or lawns. A waxcap grassland also frequently contains representatives of several other key grassland fungi groups, of which the fairy clubs (Clavariaceae family), earthtongues (Geoglossaceae) and pinkgills belonging to the genus Entoloma are the most prominent. Collectively these groups are often referred to as the CHEGD fungi, an acronymn derived from their initials. Additional grassland fungi representatives from the genera Dermoloma, Porpoloma and Camarophyllopsis are also included as honorary CHEGD fungi. The common factor linking these fungi groups is their requirement for nutrient-poor soil types, i.e. agriculturally unimproved grasslands. Such grasslands have usually received little or no input from modern agricultural nitrogen-based fertilisers and frequently support a semi-natural sward with fine-leaved grass species such as Festuca ovina, Agrostis capillaris and Anthoxanthum odoratum. A well-developed moss layer is almost always present and usually contains the widespread grassland moss species Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus. Waxcap grasslands usually have a well-grazed sward that is maintained by regular livestock browsing or frequent mowing.

Protoplasma https://doi.org/10.1007/s00709-018-1319-9 ORIGINAL ARTICLE Female gametophyte development in Sedum sediforme (Jacq.) Pau (Crassulaceae): an anatomical, cytochemical and ultrastructural analysis Emilia Brzezicka1 & Małgorzata Kozieradzka-Kiszkurno1 Received: 9 July 2018 /Accepted: 4 October 2018 # The Author(s) 2018 Abstract Available documentation about the development of the female gametophyte of Crassulaceae is very limited. The aim of this study was to extend the embryological knowledge of Crassulaceae by analysing the development of the embryo sac in Sedum sediforme. Transmission electron microscopy and light microscopy including Nomarski optics (DIC) were used to observe individual stages of female gametophyte development. Cytochemical staining enabled detection of lipids, insoluble polysaccharides and proteins in gametophyte cells during their formation. Their increased accumulation was observed during nucellar cell and unfunctional cell degeneration in the embryo sac at the coenocytic and cellular stages (megagametogenesis). The female gametophyte develops in anatropous, bitegmic and crassinucellate ovules. The mature embryo sac is built of seven cells but after antipodes degeneration it is formed by the egg apparatus and a central cell. The monosporic Polygonum type was observed. One megaspore mother cell (MMC) formed three cells after meiosis. A triad was formed from a functional megaspore (placed chalazally), one uninucleate megaspore and a binucleate cell located at the micropylar end. Plasmodesmata with adhering electron-dense dome were noticed in walls of the coenocytic embryo sac and in the outer walls of ephemeral antipodes. Moreover, similar to synergids, antipodes form wall ingrowths. Here, we report new structural features of the antipodal cells (the presence of plasmodesmata with an electron-dense dome) which have not been described before.

NATURAL RESOURCE INVENTORY of the WHITE OAK POND WATERSHED Ashland, Center Harbor, & Holderness, NH FINAL REPORT [White Oak Pond as seen from the northeast shoreline] Compiled by: Dr. Rick Van de Poll Ecosystem Management Consultants 30 N. Sandwich Rd. Center Sandwich, NH 03227 603‐284‐6851 [email protected] Submitted to: Squam Lakes Conservation Society December 2020 i ii SUMMARY The 2982‐acre White Oak Pond watershed lies at the head of Mill Brook along Route 3 in Holderness, New Hampshire. It includes the 298‐acre, 35‐foot deep White Oak Pond (and islands) and its two primary drainage systems in Holderness, Ashland, and Center Harbor. The watershed forms the western part of the 28,094‐acre Squam Lake Drainage (HUC 010700010502) and lies immediately above Piper Cove on Squam Lake. The two perennial streams total 2.26 miles, with the largest one rising on the north slopes of McCrillis Hill in Center Harbor and flowing northerly, and the slightly smaller one draining an unnamed hill in the eastern corner of Ashland and flowing easterly through a large beaver marsh on Coxboro Road. The watershed is primarily forested, although ponds, wetlands and other surface waters make up a substantial portion of the area (23.8%). Forests are primarily mixed hardwoods and conifers, with an abundance of white pine and red oak that have regenerated from former pastureland. Forested wetlands make up the plurality of the hydric soils areas, where red maple swamps are the most common. Other commercially viable timber species include red spruce, eastern hemlock, sugar maple, yellow birch, beech, and white oak.
