It turns out the former Arizona attorney general is something of a renaissance man. He is also a paradox. Woods, 52, is a Republican who endorses Democrats, a defense lawyer who works as a special prosecutor, a good ol' boy who loves Italian art. He is among the state's most ubiquitous public figures, popping up just about everywhere: • He is prosecuting the "Baseline Killer" case, defending Paradise Valley socialite Sonia Falcone, giving legal advice to U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi, working as a judge pro tem and investigating corruption in Apache County. • He helped campaign for Gov. Janet Napolitano and Congressman-elect Harry Mitchell, both Democrats, and Republican Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas. • He supported the Boy Scouts' ban on gays. He lobbied for development projects on behalf of Donald Trump and Wal-Mart. He developed Project for Arizona's Future, a campaign to promote political moderation, and helped found a Mesa Boys and Girls Club that is named for him. • He just finished a novel. His screenplay is being revised for production, and he writes for newspapers and a law magazine.

John Chapman On Wednesday, Chapman posthumously became the first member of the Air Force since the Vietnam War to receive the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for valor in combat. In a ceremony in the East Room of the White House, President Trump credited him with fighting to the death and then handed a frame holding the award to Chapman’s widow, Valerie Nessel. The ceremony brought to a close a years-long discussion of whether Chapman had been appropriately recognized for his valor. The Air Force combat controller, already wounded, was alone in his last hour after Navy SEALs fighting alongside him withdrew under fire to assist wounded colleagues, the Air Force found in 2016. The SEALs thought he was dead, they later said. On the basis of Chapman’s actions early in the battle, he posthumously was awarded the Air Force Cross — second only to the Medal of Honor — in 2003 for actions that included charging up a steep hill under fire in the battle and killing at least two militants inside a bunker on top. This is my final one. It is appropriate that this last speech be given before you, my colleagues, in the office. It Ohas been a fabulous run and you have been the heart and soul of that run. I come here today to thank you for your work and support, to reflect upon what we have done and to think about where we go from here. I came here believing that this office could lead this state best by fighting the fights of the common man. If we truly understood the average working man and woman of our state, I believed it would set our agenda and define our mission. I believe we have met that challenge.
