Project Implementation The Houston Parks and Recreation Department oversees the operation of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Tribute Planting Project on a year-round basis. HPARD horticulturists select sites that will benefit from wildflower plantings from both an esthetic view and an environmental impact. In the fall HPARD, with the help of volunteers, plants a mixture of wildflower seeds in the selected parks, greenspaces and esplanades across Houston. The seeds are broadcast by hand in during the fall to receive the maximum benefit from the region’s rainiest season during the winter and spring. The wildflowers planted in the fall will bloom mid-March through April. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Tribute Project works in conjunction with a variety of partners including:TX Dot, Harris County Flood Control District, the Houston Airport System, The Park People, Shell Corporation and A CAPRA Accredited Agency many volunteers.
