TIMELINE: After reading the article “Lady Bird Johnson,” students will create an annotated, illustrated, and colored timeline of Lady Bird Johnson’s life. Use 15 of the dates found in the article or in the timeline that accompanies the article in the Texas Almanac 2010–2011. 3. ESSAY: Students will write a short essay that discusses one of the two points listed, below: a. Explain how Lady Bird’s experiences influenced her life before she married Lyndon Baines Johnson. b. AAUWCOLORADObulletin fall 2015 Fall Leadership Conference-- Focusing On the Strategic Plan Our Fall Leadership Conference will be held August 28-29 at Lion Square Lodge in Vail, Colorado. Lion Square Lodge is located in the Lionshead area of Vail. The group rates are available for up to 2 days prior and 2 days after our conference subject to availability. The Fall Conference is a time for state and branch offi cers to meet and work together. The conference is open to any member, but branches should be sure to have their offi cers attend and participate. This is your opportunity to help us as we work toward the achieve- ment of the state strategic plan. This year’s conference will focus on areas identifi ed in the strategic plan. We have also utilized input received from Branch Presidents on a survey conducted this spring where the greatest need identifi ed was Mission Based Pro- gramming. We will be incorporating the topic of Mission Based Programing during the conference. Branch Program and Branch Membership Chairs should also attend to gain this important information. There will be a time for Branch Presidents/Administrators who arrive on Friday afternoon to meet together. This will be an opportunity to get acquainted with your peers and share successes and provide input to the state offi cers on what support you need. The state board will also be meeting on Saturday. Community Engagement and Educational Outreach In November 1977, 20,000 women and men left their jobs and homes in cities and small towns around the country to come together at the fi rst National Women’s Conference in Houston, Texas. Their aim was to end dis- crimination against women and promote their equal rights. Present were two former fi rst ladies–Lady Bird Johnson and Betty Ford—and the current fi rst lady, Rosalyn Carter. Also present were grandmothers and lesbians, Republicans and Democrats, African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinas, and Native Ameri- can women—and the most infl uential leaders of the burgeoning women’s movement—Bella Abzug, Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Eleanor Smeal, Ann Richards, Coretta Scott King, Barbara Jordan and others. SISTERS OF ’77 provides a fascinating look at that pivotal weekend and how it changed American life and the lives of the women who attended. Contact: [email protected] American First Ladies as Goodwill Ambassadors: Summaries after studying materials available in Presidential Libraries By Wendy Tan Head of Cataloging, Hunter College Libraries, the City University of NY 695 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10065 Abstract Quite a few First Ladies took very active moves regarding international interests, and they often weighed in their opinions on their husbands’ decisions on related issues. My research was mainly conducted in five Presidential Libraries associated with five well-traveled First Ladies. After studying hundreds of journeys they made, my descriptions were focused on five, one for each lady, of them only. All of these trips shared a common trait, which was under the calling of humanitarian cause. Key Words American First Ladies; Goodwill Ambassadors; American Women 2 Introduction According to Gallup’s poll (2001) for the category of “most admired women”, 1948-1961 was Eleanor Roosevelt; 1962-1966 Jacqueline Kennedy; 1971-1973 Pat Nixon; 1977-1980 Rosalynn Carter; 1993-2000 Hillary Clinton. One of the qualifications shared by all these winners is that they were the First Ladies during much of those periods. Another characteristic present among these First Ladies is that they actively participated in activities taking place in foreign lands. -

From the Editor
FROM THE EDITOR ntering my third year as an editor for this journal, I am continually impressed by the insightful, creative and powerful cases presented by the talented student authors E that are selected each year. In the midst of other graduate and dissertation-related duties, I find myself consistently prioritizing reviewing these case studies because I enjoy getting to deeply explore topics I would never think to investigate on my own. Often, I’m initially surprised by the issue chosen, but find myself drawn in as I read through each case. These case studies offer a refreshing alternative to other academic research whichW avoids in-depth analysis of a particular case or example in favor of abstract and quantitative approaches to exploring social issues. The cases in our current issue center on women in politics, and the representation of women in the media. In exploring the role of women in politics, these authors have chosen to analyze women’s leadership in both contemporary and historic settings. One case investigates Eleanor Roosevelt’s sponsorship of subsistence housing projects, and questions the limits placed on first ladies to enact social change. Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s time on the supreme court, the role of the court, and concerns about her potential replacements are analyzed in another case. The political coverage of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential race is examined in another. As more women continue to engage in politics, how women’s leadership is assessed in comparison to men’s is of extreme importance. The divisive coverage of Hillary Clinton brings us to another important theme of this journal, the representation of women in the media. -

Eisenhower Library While the 1940s may conjure up images of "Rosie the Riveter" and women growing produce in their Victory Gardens on the homefront, the 1950s may be characterized as the era of June Cleaver and Harriet Nelson--women comfortable in the roles of mother and wife in the suburban neighborhoods of that era. The public statements concerning women's issues made by President Dwight D. Eisenhower show him to be a paradox: "...we look to the women of our land to start education properly among all our citizens. We look to them, I think, as the very foundation--the greatest workmen in the field of spiritual development...We have come a long ways in recognizing the equality of women. Unfortunately, in some respects, it is not yet complete. But I firmly believe it will soon be so." (Remarks at the College of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington, October 18, 1956) "I cannot imagine a greater responsibility, a greater opportunity than falls to the lot of the woman who is the central figure in the home. They, far more than the men, remind us of the values of decency, of fair play, of rightness, of our own self-respect--and respecting ourselves always ready to respect others. The debt that all men owe to women is not merely that through women we are brought forth on this world, it is because they have done far more than we have to sustain and teach those ideals that make our kind of life worth while."
