The major reason was that SLRs could handle close-ups, photomicrography, duplication work, and other applications without being constrained by the limits of rangefinder camera lenses. When Canon introduced the Canonflex, its first SLR, there were already eight SLR models on the market. The Canonflex used a high-quality, breechlock lens mount. The lens flange ring was turned to lock the lens onto the camera flange's bayonet lugs. The lens flange and camera flange did not rub against each other like today's lens mounts.The camera used Super-Canomatic lenses which had a fast, fully- automatic diaphragm. A 130-degree winding trigger at the camera bottom enabled quick film advance. An external selenium exposure meter could also be attached. Canon R-serie Canon Flex RP September 1960 To cut costs, the camera had a fixed, eye-level pentaprism viewfinder. This was the economy or "Populaire" version of the Canonflex. The self-timer was operated by a simple lever, and the pentaprism cover was part of the single-piece top cover. Other features and performance were the same as the original Canonflex. Canon R-serie Canon Flex R2000 September 1960 Deluxe version of the Canonflex. With a top shutter speed of 1/2000 sec., the fastest ever for any camera, the R2000 was a high-performance 35mm SLR.     SPECULATIONS ON THE MEGAPIXEL RACE OR "DO I NEED A + 32 MEGAPIXEL SENSOR?" By S.Saragosa a.k.a. tjshot Recent announcements of 24 Mpxls APS-C and rumors of 36 Mpxls full frame sensors seem to have changed the scenario for digital camera enthusiasts, triggering opposite reactions: some of us are out of the skin to get the new babies (I'm among them) while others seem to question the effectiveness of such upgrades. We had similar doubts in the past when upgrading to higher density sensors and I've read many articles on the internet stating that you don't really need more than about 20 Mpxls full frame sensor (due to lense diffraction/aberration, sensor sampling performance etc.) I hardly agree. At the level of development we have reached today a small increase of pixel pitch (effective sampling rate -> sharpness and resolution boost) in the sensor will induce a much higher (square growth law) megapixel count, thus requiring much larger in-camera buffer memory, faster data saving channels, more powerful computers etc. At the same time noise control becomes increasingly difficult (square growth law) due to higher amplification of the signal needed to achieve the same ISO rating; on the other side smaller pitch sensors seem to produce a much more even and defined noise, partly counterbalancing the degradation in quality (think about the terrible "pepper" grain in Canon EOS 5D compared to the smoother Canon EOS 7D). Many additional elements factor in, resulting in final image quality: A/D converter performance (12bit to 14bit seems to produce a very high boost in dynamic range, noise performance etc.), image processor, firmware etc.
