Ramsey program from 1990-93 before moving on as an assistant coach to help Tennessee State University win the Ohio Valley Conference title and advance to the 1994 NCAA Tour- nament. While at Tennessee State, Ramsey coached his first of several future profession- als by helping develop Carlos Rogers into a lottery pick by the Seattle Supersonics. In his first year at Cal for the 1996-97 cam- paign, Ramsey was instrumental in helping the Bears post their best overall record since 1960 (23-9), as they reached the Sweet 16 of the 1997 NCAA Tournament. In 2001, he helped the Bears once again be selected for the NCAA Tournament with a 20-11 record. He was also a part of two Cal NIT teams, including the 1999 squad that captured the NIT championship. The fourth annual Eastern Michigan University Men’s Basketball Golf Classic was held Aug. 3, 2009 at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti. EMU Head Coach Charles E. Ramsey started the Golf Classic in 2006 to gain support for the EMU men’s basketball program. All four Golf Classics have combined a large group of basketball boosters and a host of former players and coaches to make the day a special one for everyone involved. George Gervin made his return to Eastern Michigan University Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, in front of a large crowd at the Convocation Center to receive an honorary baccalaureate degree from the University. For Gervin, it is the third honor Eastern Michigan has bestowed on the men’s basketball All-American. His jersey was retired in 1986 and he was elected to the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame in1993. He led EMU to the Final Four of the NCAA College Division National Championship in 1971-72 and earned All-American honors that year as a sophomore. He finished his college career with 1,044 points and 562 rebounds. After leaving EMU in 1972, Gervin began his professional basketball career that year with the Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association. He went on to play for the San Antonio Spurs and the in the NBA. He was a nine- time NBA All-Star (1977-85) and was the NBA All-Star Game MVP in 1980. Gervin was named one of the Top 50 Greatest Players in the history of the NBA and was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.
