The rhythm section is often lagging like this, creating a dirly sound like that of sludge-rockers the Grifters. At other times the band works as one Scene and Heard cohesive unit to create some magnificent songs that are extremely catchy once you can get past Bachman’s frequent lyrical miscalculations. This is easier than it sounds, considering many of the vocals are incoherent but work well as a compliment to the music. “Death in the Park” is a good example of the music found on Vee Vee.The song begins with an attractive instrumental intro, leading into lyrics that seem silly and pointless. However, as the song goes on, the music creates a sweet poppy sound and Bachman’s vocals only add to this sensation. Other songs such as “1985” and “Underachievers March and Flight Song”continue the experimental mindset the Archers have recently discovered. “1985” begins the second side with an organ piece that sounds strikingly similar to something from Pink Floyd’s The Wall (though the music itself couldn’t be less similar). “Underachievers” starts with carnival sounding horns that reappear throughout the track. Though the high hopes that most people have had for the album probably will not be fulfilled, Vee Vee is basically a fun little album that leaves much room for an incredible live performance (The Archers dbeopeningforWeezeratAvalon on March 26th).
