About Amnesia: The Dark Descent Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a survival horror video game from Frictional Games, released in 2010 for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems, in 2016 for the PlayStation 4 platform and in 2018 for Xbox One. In the same vein as previous Frictional Games games, Amnesia is a first-person adventure game. The game retains the physical interaction of objects used in the Penumbra series, allowing for physics-based puzzles and interactions such as opening doors and fixing machines. Few objects in the game are controlled by a switch; to open the door, for example, the player must hold the mouse button and then press (or pull) the mouse. This gives the player a stealth that allows them to peek out the barely open door or open it slowly to sneak away, but also adds to the player's sense of helplessness as it is now possible to try to push open the pull door while the danger approaches from behind. In addition to the health indicator, Daniel's sanity must be managed. For too long, witnessing disturbing events or looking at monsters will reduce Daniel's sanity, causing visual and auditory hallucinations and Attention monsters. Monsters. The sources help restore sanity, and if they are not, Daniel can use tinderboxes to light candles in the wall of sconces and candelabra, or deploy an oil lantern found at the beginning of the game. However, the number of tinderboxes and the amount of oil available is both limited, and standing in a light source also makes the player more visible to monsters. The player must balance the amount of time Daniel spends in light and shadow. Common sense is fully restored after Daniel completes the lens or progresses the history of the game. It can also be restored by staying in the shadows until Daniel loses aside, but this leaves him extremely vulnerable to any nearby monsters. If the monster notices Daniel, he'll chase him until he's out of sight. If he is spotted, Daniel must run because Amnesia does not give the player access to the weapon. Daniel must find shelters or barricade doors with rocks, chairs and other obstacles; However, the monsters are able to tear down the doors in their path and kick obstacles to the side, and move very quickly as soon as they notice their prey. Players can also choose to hide Daniel in the shadows, for the price of sanity. Monsters that lose sight of Daniel will look for him on time, but eventually leave and disappear. Players can also choose, preferably during the pursuit, to pick up the object and throw it to the monster, temporarily stunning the monster within two seconds and giving Daniel some extra distance. • Threat Simulation in Virtual Limbo Preprint
This is a preprint of the article “Threat simulation in virtual limbo: An evolutionary approach to horror video games” by Jens Kjeldgaard-Christiansen and Mathias Clasen, Aarhus University. The final, published version has been published in the Journal of Gaming and Virtual Worlds and is available at https://doi.org/10.1386/jgvw.11.2.119_1. Page 2 of 33 Threat Simulation in Virtual Limbo: An Evolutionary Approach to Horror Video Games Keywords: horror, Limbo, game studies, evolution, simulation, evolutionary psychology Abstract Why would anyone want to play a game designed to scare them? We argue that an alliance between evolutionary theory and game studies can shed light on the forms and psychological functions of horror video games. Horror games invite players to simulate prototypical fear scenarios of uncertainty and danger. These scenarios challenge players to adaptively assess and negotiate their dangers. While horror games thereby instil negative emotion, they also entice players with stimulating challenges of fearful coping. Players who brave these challenges expand their emotional and behavioural repertoire and experience a sense of mastery, explaining the genre’s paradoxical appeal. We end by illustrating our evolutionary approach through an in-depth analysis of Playdead’s puzzle-horror game Limbo. Page 3 of 33 Introduction Imagine this: You are a little boy, lost somewhere deep in the woods at night. You do not know how you got there or how to get out. All you know is that your sister is out there, somewhere, possibly in great danger. You have to find her. The ambiance is alive with animal calls, the flutter of branches and bushes and a welter of noises that you cannot quite make out.
