Light Shadows: Loose Adaptations of Gothic Literature in American TV Series o... 1 Light Shadows: Loose Adaptations of Gothic Literature in American TV Series of the 1960s and early 1970s Dennis Tredy 1 In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, in a somewhat failed attempt to wrestle some high ratings away from the network leader CBS, ABC would produce a spate of supernatural sitcoms, soap operas and investigative dramas, adapting and borrowing heavily from major works of Gothic literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The trend began in 1964, when ABC produced the sitcom The Addams Family (1964-66), based on works of cartoonist Charles Addams, and CBS countered with its own The Munsters (CBS, 1964-66) –both satirical inversions of the American ideal sitcom family in which various monsters and freaks from Gothic literature and classic horror films form a family of misfits that somehow thrive in middle-class, suburban America. -

The Festival lineup includes seven new plays in the making – allowing audiences to witness the creative process as it unfolds – and partake in a rich diversity of voices and topics, ranging from the challenges of welcoming home an Iraqi war veteran to Australian racial identity to life and death on the streets of Oakland. With exceptional directors orchestrating a cast of top Bay Area actors who bring their keen artistic sensibilities to each piece and talented dramaturgs helping the writers further shape their work (a dramaturg’s function is similar to that of a book editor), each play has been carefully staffed to provide playwrights and audiences with an amazing experience in new play development. As in years past, the Festival has attracted some of the most exciting up-and-coming directing talent who are eager to tackle the exciting new work brought by the emerging playwrights. Dan Dietz’s Home Below Zero will be directed by Meredith McDonough, who, despite being a relative newcomer to Bay Area theater, has made a significant mark since her arrival in 2009. -

[Title of Show] Information and Audition Guidelines
[title of show] Information and Audition Guidelines IMPORTANT NOTE: We are producing this show during the worldwide COVID pandemic. Safety and the health and well-being of all involved is our primary concern. We will never put anyone “at risk” at any time, for any reason. If, as a member of this company, you ever feel unsafe, please speak up immediately. Our goal is to produce this show COVID-free, with everyone remaining healthy through the entire process, mid-February through April 18. If the pandemic worsens and the plan outlined below is not feasible, we will change our plans immediately in accordance with university and Connecticut state regulations. About the Show [title of show] is the ultimate meta-musical; it is a musical play about 4 people writing a musical play about writing a musical play. The play is, therefore, largely autobiographical (a well-chosen and edited autobiography!) because the four characters telling the story—Jeff, Hunter, Heidi, and Susan—are the four real-life people who created [title of show]. Plot The play—and the real story—begins with Hunter forwarding his best friend Jeff an e-mail about a new musical theatre festival soliciting scripts. They have 3 weeks to write and submit a new piece…and they haven’t started. They engage their friends Heidi and Susan to help them out. When they have to fill in the blank for the title of the show, the space already says “[title of show]” so they decide to leave it as is. The show gets accepted at the Festival (the first year of the real New York Musical Theatre Festival— 2004) and then it moves on from there—through workshop productions to a successful run off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre to—finally— Broadway in 2008 at the Lyceum Theatre. -
