The Festival lineup includes seven new plays in the making – allowing audiences to witness the creative process as it unfolds – and partake in a rich diversity of voices and topics, ranging from the challenges of welcoming home an Iraqi war veteran to Australian racial identity to life and death on the streets of Oakland. With exceptional directors orchestrating a cast of top Bay Area actors who bring their keen artistic sensibilities to each piece and talented dramaturgs helping the writers further shape their work (a dramaturg’s function is similar to that of a book editor), each play has been carefully staffed to provide playwrights and audiences with an amazing experience in new play development. As in years past, the Festival has attracted some of the most exciting up-and-coming directing talent who are eager to tackle the exciting new work brought by the emerging playwrights. Dan Dietz’s Home Below Zero will be directed by Meredith McDonough, who, despite being a relative newcomer to Bay Area theater, has made a significant mark since her arrival in 2009.

Seth Rudetsky taught me how to read!By Jodi DisarioI used to read voraciously- a book a day. Murder mysteries were my thing. Loved them. Couldn't get enough. Then something happened and I couldn't read more than three pages at a time. I simply couldn't pay attention long enough. I was sure I had ADHD or a brain tumor or some other horrible disease. My doctors were puzzled. I think they were just afraid to tell me I was getting old. But THEN I discovered the wonderful Seth Rudetsky. I knew of Seth through his SiriusXM show. I love listening to his backstage gossip. His interviews with my favorite actors are a great way to pass the time in my car. On a whim, I bought Broadway Nights and looked at the first couple of pages.

  • [Title of Show] Information and Audition Guidelines
[title of show] Information and Audition Guidelines IMPORTANT NOTE: We are producing this show during the worldwide COVID pandemic. Safety and the health and well-being of all involved is our primary concern. We will never put anyone “at risk” at any time, for any reason. If, as a member of this company, you ever feel unsafe, please speak up immediately. Our goal is to produce this show COVID-free, with everyone remaining healthy through the entire process, mid-February through April 18. If the pandemic worsens and the plan outlined below is not feasible, we will change our plans immediately in accordance with university and Connecticut state regulations. About the Show [title of show] is the ultimate meta-musical; it is a musical play about 4 people writing a musical play about writing a musical play. The play is, therefore, largely autobiographical (a well-chosen and edited autobiography!) because the four characters telling the story—Jeff, Hunter, Heidi, and Susan—are the four real-life people who created [title of show]. Plot The play—and the real story—begins with Hunter forwarding his best friend Jeff an e-mail about a new musical theatre festival soliciting scripts. They have 3 weeks to write and submit a new piece…and they haven’t started. They engage their friends Heidi and Susan to help them out. When they have to fill in the blank for the title of the show, the space already says “[title of show]” so they decide to leave it as is. The show gets accepted at the Festival (the first year of the real New York Musical Theatre Festival— 2004) and then it moves on from there—through workshop productions to a successful run off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre to—finally— Broadway in 2008 at the Lyceum Theatre.

HERE. THIS Book by Hunter Bell & Susan Blackwell Music & lyrics by Jeff Bowen Musical direction by Larry Pressgrove Directed and choreographed by Michael Berresse The Vineyard Theatre 108 East 15th Street (212-353-0303), www.vineyardtheatre.org By David NouNou The foursome that brought us the hilarious [title of show] has given us another little gem. This one is more biographical in nature, with more intimate and personal situations from their childhood to the present day. Set in a museum, it brings together man’s evolution and the intersection of people’s lives into the Now. Here. This. Everything that leads to living in the “now,” being “here” and having “this.” Appreciate it all, because it comes around only once and goes oh-so-quickly. Definitely not frivolous, this is thoughtful entertainment that doles out equal doses of heartfelt humor, humanity, and hindsight. Everything that happened in the past has a way of resurfacing and affecting the present and even the future. The foursome have taken incidents from their past, whether they were good, bad, harmful or pleasurable, and brought them to focus for themselves as well as for the audience. For surely all of us have experienced the same feelings, whether in our adolescence, teens, or adulthood. It is a way to see the similarities in ourselves, have a chuckle at our foibles, and hopefully have grown from the past.
