Creeque Alley Words & Music: the Mamas & the Papas Creeque Alley Words & Music: The Mamas & The Papas B7 E7 John and Mitchy were getting kind of itchy just to leave the folk music behind. E7 B7 Sal and Denny, working for a penny, trying to get a fish on the line. F#7 E7 In a coffee house Sebastian sat and after every number they'd pass the hat. B7 E7 McGuinn and McGuire's just a-getting higher in L.A., you know where that's at. E7 D7 B7 And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass. Solly said, "Denny, you know there aren't many Who can sing a song the way that you do, let's go south" Denny said, "Solly, golly, don't you think that I wish I could play guitar like you?" Sal, Denny and Sebastian sat, at the Night Owl And after every number they'd pass the hat. McGuinn and McGuire's still a-gettin' higher in L.A., you know where that's at. And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass. When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swarthmore, But she changed her mind one day. Standing on the turnpike, thumb out to hitch hike take her to New York right away. When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps called John and Sal And that was the Mugwumps. McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get no higher but that's what they were aiming at. And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass. Mugwumps, high jumps, low slumps, big bumps don't you work as hard as you play. Make up, break up, everything you shake up, guess it had to be that way. Sebastian and Zal formed the Spoonful. Michelle, John, and Denny getting very tuneful. McGuinn and McGuire just a-catching fire in L.A., you know where that's at. And everybody's getting fat except Mama Cass. INSTRUMENTAL VERSE: Broke, busted, disgusted, agents can't be trusted and Mitchy wants to go to the sea. Cass can't make it, she says we'll have to fake it, we knew she'd come eventually. Breezin' on American Express cards, tent's low rent, but keeping out the heat's hard. Duffy's good vibrations and our imaginations can't go on indefinitely. And California dreamin' is becoming a reality. .

Buddy Holly. “70 Miles” is about being on with a very nice variety of different styles both electric and resonator guitar and the road to a gig. I’m not sure what the title and grooves. “Out Of Your Head” is a harmonica, and sings; Pete Devine plays refers to, the lyrics aren’t terribly filthy, but Blues that shifts tempos between that drums and washboard; Joe Kyle Jr. plays maybe they’re thinking of the guitar tone. “Smokin’ TNT Drinkin’ Dynamite” groove upright bass. • Dear John – the Sebastian Collection
Dear John – the Sebastian Collection Now I know a little about the Everly Brothers, a little about Gordon Lightfoot, and even less about a whole host of other great singer/songwriters. But I don’t know a lot about John Sebastian other than he played guitar and harmonica for Tim Hardin and Fred Neil back in the mid-60s; he was featured strongly in Creeque Alley, John Phillips’ ode to California Dreaming; he made good time music a reality with the Lovin’ Spoonful; he provided the opening (acoustic) act at Woodstock when everyone’s electrics were flooded out; he inspired no less than John and June to pay homage to him; he allowed the Everly Brothers into his lounge to close off their RCA debut with long-time collaborator Paul Rothschild; oh and he gave John Travolta a pretty big kick up the ladder by writing a very simple theme tune called ‘Welcome Back’ in the mid-70s. But what I do know about John Sebastian is that he is just about one of the most talented musicians, songwriters, and performers of a generation. And this collection is the living proof. I’ve been doing this job for a few years now but have Fred Neil, partly under the only just achieved my ambition of starting a tutelage of producer Paul compilation with a ‘Finale’. I Rothschild. • Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation
presents GREENWICH VILLAGE: MUSIC THAT DEFINED A GENERATION A film by Laura Archibald Canada / 2012 / 92 min. / Color and Black & White / English A Kino Lorber Release 333 West 39 Street, Suite 503 New York, NY 10018 (212) 629-6880 Press Contacts: Rodrigo Brandão – [email protected] Matt Barry – [email protected] SYNOPSIS Featuring poignant interviews with Pete Seeger, Kris Kristofferson, Don McLean, Peter Yarrow, Arlo Guthrie, Lucy and Carly Simon, Tom Chapin and Judy Collins, among dozens of other music luminaries, GREENWICH VILLAGE: MUSIC THAT DEFINED A GENERATION combines talking heads with rare archival footage to tell a story about a community that created a generation-defining music. Greenwich Village was the birthplace of the singer/songwriter and songs of love and relationships. Between 1961-1973, many musicians in The Village banded together to sing about the radical social upheaval of the time. As these new singers emerged, Greenwich blossomed as a place that promoted a better future. Their music challenged the status quo by singing about taboo subjects - fighting for civil liberties, protesting the Vietnam War, and holding governments accountable for their actions. Their views, which were controversial at the time, weren't always greeted with open arms. On Sunday April 9, 1961, over 500 young musicians gathered in Greenwich Village's Washington Square to sing folk songs to promote peace and harmony. This act of passive protest resulted in riot squads attacking singers and civilians alike with billy clubs, leading to several arrests. The incident became known around the world as the Washington Square Folk Riot and was cited as the first 'freedom of speech' revolt.

The Mamas and Papas SongbookBy Carl in MiamiFor my purposes, the book was a good supplement to the adequate tablature I got off the internet, but the book is not a sheet music version of the recorded songs. Like a lot of similar song books out there, most of the stuff is in the wrong key. And I needed the version of "My Girl" by the Mamas and Papas. The version in the book is the generic rendition without the intro or bridge I needed. There wasn't a good tab on the internet, and I ended up just picking it up by ear.A good photo section, like some of the old songbooks have, would have redeemed this book. But no photos except for the front and back cover.I have not picked through all the songs in the book, but so far I am not too impressed with it. Hope to sit down follow along with some of the recordings. Maybe better luck then.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.

  • Haunt. Though a Bit Shopworn, Co-Opted
P E R F O R M R S MAMA AND FâPâ “CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’.SEVEN NOW THE PHRASE HAS THE POWER TO haunt. Though a bit shopworn, co-opted by advertising sloganeers, it still evokes what it first suggested - an overpowering yearning, a dream from the depths of winter, of healing sunshine. C o And it’s impossible to hear the phrase without hearing the harmonies, soaring and wistful, of the Mamas and the Papas. John Phillips wrote the song, as he did most of the The Mamas and the Papas: John Phillips, Michelle quartet’s singles, but the sound is emphatically a group Phillips, Denny Doherty, sound: John’s guitar backing the soprano of his wife Mama Cass Elliot (from left) Michelle, Denny Doherty’s lead tenor, the ripe alto of Cass Elliot, strongest of the group’s four singers. Not only did it embody in 1966 a utopian California of the Aquarian mind, but its singers tantalized us with the hope of new commu nity. A band that spotlit both male and female vocals, songs whose folk-rock bones were fleshed out with pure pop arrangements, chord changes that B Y P A IB L EVANS echoed in sophistication those of the classic American song- book (the Gershwins, Cole Porter, et aL): The Mamas and the Papas elevated Sixties Top Forty radio by offering a joyous something for everyone. Bohemian in dress, they were yet perfectionist in their har monizing (beautiful and dynamic, the sound was achieved by stacking up notes from the sixth of the chord). “Outrageous at the time - their debut album cover depicted them (clothed) in a unisex bathtub - they were still an adamantly sunny gang of rebels.
