Leonardo da Vinci Society Newsletter Editor: Matthew Landrus Issue 42, November 2015 Recent and forthcoming events did this affect the science of anatomy? This talk discusses the work of Leonardo da Vinci, The Annual General Meeting and Annual Vesalius and Fabricius and looks at how the Lecture 2016 nature of the new art inspired and shaped a new wave of research into the structure of the Professor Andrew Gregory (University College, human body and how such knowledge was London), will offer the Annual Lecture on Friday, transmitted in visual form. This ultimately 13 May at 6 pm. The lecture, entitled, ‘Art and led to a revolution in our under-standing of Anatomy in the 15th & 16th Centuries’ will be anatomy in the late 16th and early 17th centu- at the Kenneth Clark Lecture Theatre of the ries. A late pen and ink drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, now in Windsor Castle (W 12698 recto, ca. 1513), reverses ideas common in the Re naissance about the sometimes antagonistic relationship between nature and culture (fig. 1). In contrast to his almost contemporary "Deluge Se ries," the drawing does not show the worst case scenario of meteorolo gy, destroying the creations of man, but a flood of tools and instruments that fall on the surface of the earth. We identify, among other objects, pincers, hammers, nails, angles, glasses, rulers, rakes, bottles, bagpipes, ladders, clocks, plates, discs, and what is more, among the clouds, a lion. In contrast to a line on the top of the sheet "Here Adam and here Eve" which probably belonged to another sketch on the same sheet, later cut off,1 the legend of the actual drawing leaves no doubt about its pessimistic meaning: "O miseria umana, di quante cose per danari ti fai servo. O human misery, to how many things are you enslaved just for the money." Related to the lion in the clouds, the sketch becomes a prod igy (cf. Peter Apian, Practica for 1532, Landshut 1531; fig. 2), perhaps alluding to the proverbial technophilia of the Florentines city of the Marzocco or a cryptosignature of LeoneLeonardo himself.2 But it is more reasonable, I believe, to interpret the lion as a reference to Pope Leo X, elected in 1513, a person who raised many hopes in Leonardo, which turned, however, into disappointment and complaints. -

Biennale Internazionale d’Arte Contemporanea di Firenze ARS ET INGENIUM Toward Leonardo da Vinci’s Legacy of Similitude and Invention Looking forward to commemorating the fifth centennial of Leonardo da Vinci’s death in 2019, the International Contemporary Art Biennial of Florence would arouse some reflection on the cognitive and creative approach of the great master of the Renaissance who is regarded as a genius of all time. More particularly, the theme of the XIIth Florence Biennale is focused on Leonardo’s multifaceted being: an outstanding artist yet a ‘scientist’, he was committed to exploring nature so as to grasp a knowledge spanning different disciplines – comparative anatomy, botany, geology, physics, also intertwining cosmology with his studies on light, and much more. As we may read in his letter to Ludovico Maria Sforza, Duke of Milan (also known as ‘Ludovico il Moro’), whereby he affirmed he could represent anything in form of ‘of marble, bronze, and clay sculpture, and similiter in pictura’, Leonardo thrived in synthesising visual and structural elements because he also had the skills of an architect and engineer.i He was able to design mobile bridges, buildings and channels as well as breakthrough artillery, pyrotechnic effects, and a wide variety of devices. Indeed, we may well cherish the fantasy of some of Leonardo’ inventions evoked through artistry and imagination at the Fortezza da Basso during the days in which it will host installations by hundred of artists from around the world, many of whom showing their installations. -

Title: THE LOST MANUSCRIPTS OF LEONARDO DA VINCI A history of Leonardo da Vinci’s manuscripts and a calculation of how many remain lost Summary: This thesis investigates the history of Leonardo da Vinci’s manuscripts, explains the recovery of some of those that were lost, and calculates what proportion of his work remains lost. It does this by researching the following four main topics: the compilation of his manuscripts; the dispersal and loss of his manuscripts; the recovery and reconstruction of some manuscripts; and an estimate of what remains lost. Most of Leonardo’s manuscripts were written in the last thirty years of his life. The first part of this thesis traces which manuscripts were written and when. After his death, his manuscripts dispersed and it is not known how many were lost. The next section details the dispersal. Recovery of some manuscripts took place followed by further dispersal and loss. Part of the recovery was due to key collectors such as Pompeo Leoni. -
Observations About Leonardo's Drawings for Luca Pacioli
Observations about Leonardo’s drawings for Luca Pacioli DIRK HUYLEBROUCK Department for Architecture, KULeuven, Brussels, Belgium. Three versions of Luca Pacioli’s ‘De Divina Proportione’ remain: a manuscript held in Milan, another in Geneva and a printed version edited in Venice. A recent book, ‘Antologia della Divina Proporzione’, has all three in one volume, allowing an easy comparison of the different versions. The present paper proposes some observations about these drawings, generally said to be of Leonardo da Vinci’s hand. Three copies Three versions of Luca Pacioli’s ‘De divina proportione’ remain: there are the two manuscripts, one from the Bibliothèque de Genève and one from the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, written between 1496 and 1498, and there is the wider spread printed version from Venice, which appeared only in 1509, that is, about ten years later. A recent book, ‘Antologia della Divina Proporzione’ unites images from all three editions and allows comparing them easily by presenting similar illustrations on opposing pages (see [1]). Not surprisingly, the colour and printed images are each other’s reflections about a vertical axis (in most cases) and thus we will represent them here often with an additional reflection about the vertical axis, to make the comparison easier. The present paper focuses on observations based on the comparison of the different version. This is not straightforward: for instance, the colour plates are not always as accurate as the black and white ones, or vice versa. Still, the present approach is rather modest, as we avoid interpretations and historic questions, which we leave to art historians. -

Leonardo da Vinci’s studies of friction Ian M. Hutchings University of Cambridge, Department of Engineering, Institute for Manufacturing, 17 Charles Babbage Road, Cambridge CB3 0FS, UK email: [email protected] Abstract Based on a detailed study of Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks, this review examines the development of his understanding of the laws of friction and their application. His work on friction originated in studies of the rotational resistance of axles and the mechanics of screw threads. He pursued the topic for more than 20 years, incorporating his empirical knowledge of friction into models for several mechanical systems. Diagrams which have been assumed to represent his experimental apparatus are misleading, but his work was undoubtedly based on experimental measurements and probably largely involved lubricated contacts. Although his work had no influence on the development of the subject over the succeeding centuries, Leonardo da Vinci holds a unique position as a pioneer in tribology. Introduction Although the word ‘tribology’ was first coined almost 450 years after the death of Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519), it is clear that Leonardo was fully familiar with the basic tribological concepts of friction, lubrication and wear. He has been widely credited with the first quantitative investigations of friction, and with the definition of the two fundamental ‘laws’ of friction some two hundred years before they were enunciated (in 1699) by Guillaume Amontons, with whose name they are now usually associated.
