Good Afternoon Members, The Country Pub Run route has been planned and it’s going to be a fun day out over some great Sprite roads and also a small amount of Highway driving. We will meet at the Calamvale Hotel Carpark to leave at 9.00 am Sunday 15th March. A drive through Beaudesert and out to Kalbar for a coffee stop ( shops available or bring a flask of your own brew). Then off to Clifton Pub for lunch. After lunch there will be a lovely cruise down the mountainous Sprite roads bypassing Gatton and through Laidley and Rosewood towards Ipswich. Or you can follow the Highway for a quicker run home. I’ll leave that up to the individuals. Total of 350klm from start to back near Ipswich. Let me know if you will be coming so I can inform the Hotel. Everyone’s welcome even if your Sprite is not on the road. Just come out in your normal car. PH 0416863455 The outing is listed under the Events Section of the Clubs Facebook page so you can also place your attendance there Hope to see you all there. Scott C

German Bakehouse Cars & Coffee and Rolls Royce Museum, Saturday 7th March.

As you can see, Kermit already knows the way there.

Murray Browning is organising what should be a most interesting morning. Meet at Yandina Railway Station at 7:00am for a 7:15 departure. It will be a 15 minute run to the German Bakehouse at Coolum for their regular Coffee & Cars gathering. After about an hour we will wander down the road to the Rolls Royce Museum. This stunning collection of prestige British cars is part of the larger ‘Sir Henry Royce Foundation’ and while it features mostly Rolls-Royce, it also includes Bentleys, Austins and MGs, (no Healeys!). Frank Carroll, Rolls-Royce owner and the driving force behind the Museum, will be on hand to talk to us about Rolls-Royce. A $5pp donation will be appropriate. RSVP Robert Jones (0438424616, [email protected]) by Wed 4th March. Thanks Murray for this initiative.

I just wanted to say Thank You to the members that came along today & supported this months Club Run/Event. Even though it was a very hot day I am pretty sure everyone enjoyed themselves, I believe there was 562 cars in total on the Ormiston State School grounds. Also just wanted to make special mention our new member Carol Cooke who came along in her very beautiful MK1 MG Midget, very well presented. Look forward to seeing Carol & the car on more runs. . Our February run would have had us travelling north on some good Sprite roads into the Sunshine Coast hinterland, with a morning tea stop, and a country pub lunch not too far out of Brisbane. However, with only 2 members putting their names down for the event on our Face Book page, we decided to just meet up for a pub lunch up at Mapleton instead. New members Lyn & Wayne came down from Imbil. Nev, Karen & Keith came up from Brisbane. Annie & I came up the hill from Nambour. Lyn & Wayne have recently moved down from Cairns and are good friends with the other Sprite members up there. They will all be attending our National Challenge in April too. We enjoyed some spirited conversation, as we got to know each other over a drink or two. Wayne was happy to share about Graham Hepburn’s exploits around Cairns with his new acquisition, a V12 Ferrari. We generally solved the problems of the world as we waited for our food to be served. The meals were really good but were too large for several of us. After a good amount of great conversation, we were homeward bound again. I will try to re-use the planned run at a later date, because there are lots of Spritely roads on the route I had planned. Hopefully, we will get a bigger number of members attending next time, and I will give more advance notice of the details when that happens. Yours Spritely, Alex

By Carol Cooke MG GAN 1 Midget 1962 G-AN 1/13371 Engine No. 17348 This Midget was bought in England and collected at Abingdon by an American who drove it through all countries where possible to Asia and then it was put on a ship to Melbourne. He then drove it up to Queensland and to Nambour where Ray Grace, from Ray Grace Motors, saw him having a coffee. Ray said to him ‘Where are you going in that, sonny?’ to which he replied that he was heading north to the top of Australia. ‘Not in that. I can sell you a 4WD’. This is in 1962, of course. Ray Grace sold trucks and his apprentices had the choice of working on dirty trucks or pulling to pieces the Midget. You can guess what they chose, and the Midget ended up in 7 wheelie bins. Ray Grace also paid $18,000 for a perfect repaint job. It was stored at his wife’s place and many years later Ray Grace said that he is dying and has sold his business to Gary Crick. (He didn’t die and only recently passed away.) Ray rang Peter Kerr and said, ‘You are the MG man – what about this MG, don’t let Crick get it’. Someone wanted it for parts, ‘No way’, said Peter. Peter then bought it but had to wait 10 months for Ray to find the ID plate. Ray eventually realised he was using it as a bookmark. The Midget, in pieces, was now at Peter’s place and Peter feels it would be good for his son, Alfie, to learn about MGs and help put together the Midget. They started off OK together, but the surf called, Alfie was gone surfing and the Midget was left as it was for many years. It was now a body on wheels. A few years ago, Peter took the Midget to be put together at Currumbin, but that fellow sold his business! Back home again. Last year the Midget went up to Peter Tighe at Maleny, who has now put it all together - the body only needed a touch- up. The 948cc engine was rebuilt. There is a lovely red interior too. All is now out of the wheelie bins! This original MG is running again. ‘Annie’ also has a new hood.

by Bob Gray, photos from Bob Gray I was born in Canberra when it was just a small country town of 12,000 people. At school I was often in the library reading car magazines from here and overseas, escaping into a world of exotic vehicles and motorsport in Europe. In 1958, at the age of thirteen I hopped on my Malvern Star and rode with two friends to the Hall Agricultural Show just outside of town. It was there that I saw my first Austin Healey Sprite Mark 1 (a bug eye) on display. I knew straight away that I wanted one! I don’t know why – it just seemed to represent everything I wanted in a car. As it quickly turned out, the Sprite was an exceptional car which rapidly scored many remarkable successes on the track, and my admiration grew and grew. To fulfil my goal I delivered newspapers before and after school in the icy weather, worked as a shop assistant in the holidays, and grew vegetables for sale to the supportive neighbours. When I left school I was able to pay cash for a shiny British Racing Green Mark 1 Sprite.

I will NEVER forget driving the car home that day . . . Like most of us, the memory of driving that first car is pure magic! A set of “widies” (wide wheels) rapidly followed, then my first taste of circuit racing at Amaroo. Naturally I wanted to go even faster, and a brand new Sprite Mark 3A was acquired in 1966. Another set of widies and quicker lap times followed. I was hooked on racing and eventually I took a big step and purchased a very rapid MG Midget (a rebadged Sprite) to drive in the Marque Sports category. After a short but successful racing career, I rebuilt a Mark 3 Sprite for road use, and this is the green car you have all seen around for so long. In fact, I am only the second owner of this 1964 model. It has been in the family for 45 years now and has done about one million kilometres. So my first car was a Sprite, and it is starting to look like my last car will be a Sprite too. How many people can say that!

Greetings, Well, another small attendance at Arundel Tavern this month , but it was good to see new member Carole Cook make the effort to drive down from Ormeau. I would be grateful if members have any suggestions for improving attendance at Gold Coast dinners , bearing in mind that we cater from Tweed Heads up to the Logan area. Any feedback would be appreciated. The next dinner is at the all time favorite the Gem Hotel , 287 Stapylton / Jacobs Well Road , Alberton on wednesday 18th of march at 6 / 6- 30 pm . Regards Leigh 0478 845 075 or [email protected]

The Sunshine Coast dinner was held on Tuesday 18th Feb, at the Sandstone Point Hotel. It was a beautiful evening and we sat outside with a view over the Bribie Island bridge and Pumistone passage, very quiet and peaceful. There were 10 people in attendance, and overall the meal was enjoyed. The chat was happily about cars and parts from the men, with the women discussing more important issues such as gardens, health and clothes. We missed some of our regulars that are away, for example the Constables are caravanning (or is that carousing) in Tassie – not sure why they couldn’t get back for the meeting, perhaps a bigger effort could be made next time. Hopefully we will see our other regulars such as Liz and Nick and Jackie and Keven next time, it will be good to catch up with all of them. We completed our meeting with the most massive dessert ever seen, I won’t say who had it but it was thoroughly enjoyed. Others among us had the pav and declared it to be delicious. Our next meeting is on March 17th and Mooloolah Valley Country Club. See you there. Chris

We currently have 112 members. Welcome to new members Philip and Jane McGrath. They have a 1974 Midget. For those on Concessional Registration, please note, your membership must be current to qualify for Concessional Registration to continue, or you may find that if you have an accident your Insurance Company may not cover you if you are an unfinancial Club member. -- Austin-Healey Sprite III Race Car

When the Sprite Car Club of Queensland formed in 1973, one of our most frequent Events was supporting our more sporting Members at the Mount Cotton Hillclimb. Our hero was Bruce Wasley in his striking Teal(-ish) Mark IIIA...this came standard with the “trendy” colour, Midget Seats, and a 3.9 Diff (which is not ideal for Hillclimbs) and probably indicates that is was a “run out” model before the introduction in this Country of the 1275cc MG Midget. Handsome coot, Young Bruce!

The picture following that of current Member Graham Harris in the red Sprite Mark III has absolutely nothing to do with this Article except to point out that he was “handsome coot” too!! Love Ya, Graham!

Anyhow, some time later, we trotted out to a Lakeside event and there was big, bad Bruce (Blue Race Suit) in an Improved Production Lightened Sprite III, as well as Wayne Reid's flares and my then Wife/Bruce's No 1 Fan Lorette carrying a sprog (Rhett) who was born in Feb 1975.

After an extensive campaign including Surfers Paradise, Bruce Wasley moved on to a V8 powered Ford Anglia which my memory says was Built By or Sold To Barry Wraith; years later I learned that the Sprite III was previously campaigned by Bruce Miller, and sponsored by Grand Prix Mazda nee Leyland (Joe Camilleri). Remembering that this was a Sprite III as in the bigger bearing 10CC engine, I learned that this Sprite III was fitted with a 10CG Engine???????????????....however, the Engine was “worked” and had come from the Peter Walton Nota! My un-biased interpretation of the photo following is that the Engine, either in the Nota or the subject Sprite III, were beating Iain Corness in the “Super B”!!!!

The Sprite III was sold to lovable larrikin Arthur Glasby aka “Our Arthur”...when we are not in polite company, I will tell you of his Memoriam which included the story of the “no seat belts, and a greased tow ball through the middle of the seat base!!!”....needless to say, I always intended that my Pit Crew would be known as the same as Arthur's which was the:- “No Maintenance Race Team”!!!

Page 21 of 30 28th February 2020 SPRITE ON

Ultimately, the Race Car did an “Exit Stage Right” in the “Dog Leg” of the “Lakeside Straight”...it hit the then Marshall's Station amidships, and was later parked up in a paddock at Brookfield for an eon.

Fortunately, the then Eligibility Officer helped me collect the Bones, and at that time was of the opinion that the Wreck was able to be “re-Tubbed”; he has promised every assistance to re- Homologate the Car. These days it could be Group T ie “as Raced In The Day”. Ignore the “Mk IIA” noted in the Log Book (it wasn't!) and, yes, it was raced with a 1275cc Engine later in life!

What you get, not fully inclusive:- Lightened Rolling Shell Sprite III with Flared Guards; Modified Centre Section to include Air Intake; Worked 10CG Engine and Sprite III Worked Head; the Original Sprite III Fibreglass Bonnet and Boot Lid; Period Fibreglass Seats; Mag Wheels similar to Log Book (see first photo); Widened Steel Wheels as per the “Bones”; Lightened Doors; Oil Cooler; 3/4” Anti- Rollbar and strengthening Mounts; Negative Camber Trunnions (I think?); Log Book; Build Plate; every bit of “Provenance” that I have been able to collect; .
