Integrated pest management (IPM) is a pest management system that focuses on managing pests with the least possible impact on people, property, and the environment. Farmers use tools like crop rotation, sprays or good bugs to help their crops. Using traps, scouting and identifying insects, and controlling bugs are all important tools for farmers to use. Farmers/Growers use: 2 Chemical crop sprays or powders—farmers use as little as needed, to protect the environment and to protect the water and food supplies. Pesticide applications are a useful tool, when applied according to label instructions by registered and certified pesticide applicators. 3 Crop Rotation—farmers do not grow the same crop every year, but instead rotate which crops they plant in each field. For instance, one year a farmer may grow a field of corn. The next year, the farmer may grow alfalfa hay in that field. Farmers do this because certain bugs like certain crops. By growing different crops year after year, bugs will leave. Crop rotation is a common practice on sloping soils because of its potential for saving soil. Rotation also reduces fertilizer needs, because alfalfa and other legumes replace some of the nitrogen corn and other grain crops remove. With crop rotation, pesticide costs may be reduced by naturally breaking the cycles of weeds, insects and diseases. As added benefits, grass and legumes in a rotation protect water quality by preventing excess nutrients or chemicals from entering water supplies; meadow or small grains cut soil erosion dramatically; and crop rotations add diversity to a farming operation. 4 Good Insects—farmers also use “good” or beneficial insects to protect their crops and get rid of harmful insects. Some insects can do a lot of damage to crops and orchards. An insect’s worst enemies are other insects. Of the millions of insects that eat animals instead of plants, most feed on other insects. Using insects to control insects is called a “biocontrol” method. Biological control is the use of naturally occurring organisms that act as natural enemies to the pests in question. These approaches to pest management may be used to reduce pesticide use. The introduction and encouragement of natural predators is a highly effective method of controlling many bugs. Some quick biocontrol definitions: Pest—an unwanted insect or weed; Pathogen—bacterium or fungus that causes disease in a pest; Parasite—an insect that feeds in a living pest; and Predator—an insect that eats pests. When used effectively, biocontrol methods can be a safe and effective approach to pest management. 5 Scouting/Trapping—farmers must watch their fields or orchards closely. Farmers look on the leaves of the trees or plants for bugs. This is called scouting. To help find the insects, farmers use traps. When pests are found that could damage the crop, the farmer must choose the best way to get rid of the pest. Traps are hung in fruit trees, in greenhouses and on posts in fields for other crops. A scent, called a pheromone, is used inside the trap. This attracts the bugs to the trap. The trap is sticky inside, so when the bugs fly into the trap to smell the pheromone they get stuck. Killing adult bugs stops the cycle of egg laying or larval development and reduces pest populations. Sometimes farmers need help identifying the insects they find. They use a key, or guide. A key uses color, the number of legs or other things to determine what bug they have found. 6 In addition to the pest management tools listed above, keeping things clean goes a long way toward reducing pest problems, especially indoor pests like cockroaches, ants and houseflies. Cleanliness is also important on farms for pest control, especially around feed piles and manure-prone areas. 7 The most important thing you can do to control bugs is to learn as much as you can about the life cycles and preventative treatments for bugs that are bugging you. The settlers did their best to stop the hoppers by raking them into piles, like leaves, and burning them. But these efforts were in vain because of the sheer numbers of the pests. Inventive citizens built hopper dozers or grasshopper harvesters to combat future visitations. The hoppers usually stayed from two days to a week and then left as they had come, on the wind. 4 The areas hit the worst were where most of the settlers were new arrivals, not having had the time to establish themselves in their new homes. The needs of the newly arrived immigrants in the western counties of Kansas were greater than the more settled eastern portion. They needed grain for their next year’s crops and to feed their work animals. They also needed provisions and clothing to make it through the coming winter. 5 In September the governor convened an extra session of the legislature hoping to find a way to help Kansans survive the calamity. The legislature determined that it did not have the power to take money directly from the state’s treasury to help with the emergency. The plea for help went across America. Soon aid for the destitute. Kansans began to arrive. Railroads provided free transportation of the barrels, boxes, and bales of supplies such as beans, pork, and rice. Reddy didn't stop to look or to think. His one idea was to get away from Bowser the Hound. "Wait, Granny! Wait!" he cried, and started after her as fast as he could run. He was in the middle of the bridge before he remembered it at all. When he was at last safely across, it was to find old Granny Fox sitting down laughing at him. Then for the first time Reddy looked behind him to see where Bowser the Hound might be. He was nowhere to be seen. Could he have fallen off the bridge?

"Where is Bowser the Hound?" cried Reddy.

Christopher Columbus was one of the greatest navigators of his day. His ability to explore the unknown and stick to his vision changed Europe's view of the world. His discoveries brought Europe and the Americas into contact for the first time. But not everyone feels Columbus should be remembered as a hero.

Columbus became famous when he sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. In the 1400s, Europeans were not aware that the Americas existed. Columbus convinced King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella from Spain to pay for an expedition. They provided him with three ships and money to make the journey west. It took two months for the Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria to reach San Salvador in the Caribbean. However, Columbus wrongly thought he was in India. He named the people he met there "Indians." During this visit, and his next three visits, Columbus and his men brutally mistreated the native people. They stole their land and claimed it for Spain. Their search for gold and a passage to Asia never came about.

Columbus' place in history will be debated for years to come. Some argue he was a man of courage and great skill. Although he never did reach North America, Columbus was the first to explore the West Indies and parts of Central and South America. These discoveries introduced new foods from the Americas to Europe.

However, others argue Columbus treated the native people he encountered cruelly. He took land and natural resources and began a long chapter of European abuse. Despite his remarkable achievements, Columbus didn't behave like a hero at all, critics argue. The debate about how Columbus should be remembered continues to this day.

The Story of Arachne a tale from Ancient Greece As it is told, Arachne was a young woman who arrogantly offended the goddess Athena and suffered the consequences. Here is one version of Arachne's arrogance which was spread throughout ancient Greece and served as a warning to all mortals to respect the gods.

Arachne, a proud peasant girl, was a wonderful spinner and weaver of wool. The nymphs journeyed from near and far just to watch Arachne weave.

"Ah! Athena must have given you a gift!" declared a wood nymph one day. Athena was the goddess of weaving and handicrafts and had given Arachne weaving lessons.

"Ha! Athena has taught me nothing!" Said Arachne. "I've taught myself everything I know!" And with that, she decided to challenge Athena to a contest.

"Let's see which of us should be called 'goddess of the loom'!" she said.

The nymphs were frightened to hear such mean words towards the powerful goddess who was the daughter of Zeus. Athena herself was furious when word got back to her about Arachne's conceit. The goddess immediately put on a disguise of an old woman and hobbled with a cane to Arachne's cottage.

Over time, these materials decompose and become part of the soil. Earthworms speed up this process by devouring organic matter so that it can help the plants grow and thrive much sooner.

Although the common earthworm can grow as long as fourteen inches, most are only a few inches long and weigh little more than a penny. But even though they are small, the contribution they make is immense. The next time you take a stroll through a healthy, green garden, be sure to thank the earthworms that call it home!

Source 2: Vermicomposting When you take care of your yard, you often end up with lots of dead leaves, grass clippings, and weeds that have been pulled from the garden. It is easy to consider things like these to be waste. But do not throw them away! You can use this "waste" to make compost. Compost is a nutrient–rich combination of organic materials that can be mixed with soil to nourish a garden's plants. Not all compost materials are found outside. Others, including used coffee grounds, carrot tops, and eggshells, come from the kitchen. Composting is an excellent way to recycle leftover food.

Making compost is easy. You can simply make a pile of yard and food scraps or build a compost bin from wire or wood. You must remember to turn the compost often with a shovel, so that nutrients, air, and moisture can be distributed evenly. While there is not a lot of work involved, this method of composting does take a lot of time— as long as two years!

Cameras on the car can see street signs and can tell if a traffic light is red, yellow, or green. The car's computers take in all of the information coming in from the lasers and cameras and use that to control the car. The car can tell when another car is stopping ahead and it will begin to brake. The steering wheel turns without the assistance of a person's hands. The gas pedal presses down without a person's foot pushing it. Computer maps tell the car how to get from one place to another. Human drivers could soon be a thing of the past!

Vehicles that drive themselves will mean changes for driving as we know it. Humans do not always drive safely. They sometimes get distracted or sleepy while driving. Computers, however, do not. With more self–driving cars on the road, there will be fewer car accidents. Self–driving cars do not drive faster than the speed limit or get too close to the other cars around them. Unlike humans, the tools on this car can see very far away and even in the dark.

There are many helpful things about self–driving cars, though there are a few problems. For example, the lasers do not work as well in the rain. Also, it is tough for a self–driving car to handle a problem it was not expecting. If traffic lights go out, there may be a person in the road to tell drivers when to go. However, the cars cannot understand his or her hand signals.

Although many people enjoy driving, letting the cars do the driving will cut down on the number of problems on the road. In the future, cars that can drive themselves will make driving much safer. That future is not too far off!

They took him straight to the doctor, who diagnosed him with allergies and asthma. Tom was allergic to dust, mold, and pollen. Worst of all for a swimmer, he was sensitive to chlorine!

Tom's asthma did not stop him from becoming a competitive swimmer in college though, nor did the fact 5 that he was also diagnosed with exercise–induced asthma. This meant that his asthma would get worse as he worked out more intensely. Another doctor said he also had a condition called tracheal stenosis, a narrow windpipe. Due to the tracheal stenosis and asthma, Tom could only take in about 10% as much oxygen as his competitors.

Despite his medical conditions, Tom continued to swim. His best event was the 400–meter Individual 6 Medley (IM), which consists of 100 meters each of four different strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. Sometimes Tom blacked out during practice, but never during a race. Even a collapse and subsequent hospitalization in Hawaii during his sophomore year in college did not stop Tom. He had his eye on the Olympics.

The Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 presented Tom with a special challenge. The heat and humidity created 7 sticky, heavy air that made it more difficult than usual for him to breathe. Going into the last 50 meters of the 400–meter IM, Tom was 3/100ths of a second behind his toughest competition, Eric Namesnik, another American swimmer. Tom pushed himself to the limit, beating Eric by 35/100ths of a second and setting a world record for the event. He went on to win his second gold medal in the same event in Sydney in 2000.

Tom believes that he is a great swimmer because of, not in spite of, his medical problems. He feels that his 8 asthma taught him how to overcome adversity. An Adventurous Writer The most inventive writer of the 19th century was the French author Jules Verne. He was a creative author that loved science and adventure. At the same time, Verne noticed that many people were interested in the country of Africa. Then a light went on. Verne thought to combine the two ideas together. He wrote a science fiction story about a balloon that traveled over Africa called Five Weeks in a Balloon. This was his first success as a writer. Jules became well known to readers.

Verne's writing style was very different. His books were a lot like travel books that allowed the reader to explore along with the main characters. Using science, he was able to capture the imaginations of many readers. Even though he wrote about travel and science, Jules hardly traveled anywhere and never studied under a real scientist. In spite of his inexperience, he really fascinated his readers through his stories.

Jules wrote about things that often predicted the future of science. He wrote about traveling to the moon in a book called From the Earth to the Moon. This forecast was made almost a century before a real ship landed on the moon. Another one of his new ideas was shown when he wrote a book about a submarine. He named it Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. It was pretty amazing because he wrote about them before they were even used. This adventure was about the Nautilus, a submarine that moved by electricity.

One of his most popular books was called Around the World in Eighty Days. In this story, the main character, Phileas Fogg, took a wager to travel the world in eighty days. This story was so exciting that people could not wait to read it. It was cut up into smaller pieces and published in a newspaper. People were able to read each account as if it were really an article in the newspaper. Eventually it was put together into a novel and was read all over the world. It was even made into a movie. In fact, many of his books were made into movies.

Jules Verne was a very gifted writer. During his lifetime, he wrote around eighty stories. Not only did children love his books, but adults did, too. His imagination and creative writing gave him popularity all over the world.
