Contemporary Literature from the Chinese Diaspora in Indonesia
CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE FROM THE CHINESE 'DIASPORA' IN INDONESIA Pamela Allen (University of Tasmania) Since the fall of Suharto a number of Chinese-Indonesian writers have begun to write as Chinese-Indonesians, some using their Chinese names, some writing in Mandarin. New literary activities include the gathering, publishing and translating (from Mandarin) of short stories and poetry by Chinese-Indonesians. Pribumi Indonesians too have privileged Chinese ethnicity in their works in new and compelling ways. To date little of this new Chinese-Indonesian literary activity has been documented or evaluated in English. This paper begins to fill that gap by examining the ways in which recent literary works by and about Chinese-Indonesians give expression to their ethnic identity. Introduction Since colonial times the Chinese have been subjected to othering in Indonesia on account of their cultural and religious difference, on account of their perceived dominance in the nation’s economy and (paradoxically, as this seems to contradict that economic - 1 - dominance) on account of their purported complicity with Communism. The first outbreak of racial violence towards the Chinese, engineered by the Dutch United East Indies Company, was in Batavia in 1740.1 The perceived hybridity of peranakan Chinese (those born in Indonesia) was encapsulated in the appellation used to describe them in pre-Independence Java: Cina wurung, londa durung, Jawa tanggung (‘no longer a Chinese, not yet a Dutchman, a half- baked Javanese’).2 ‘The Chinese are everywhere -

24 WacanaWacana Vol. Vol. 18 No.18 No. 1 (2017): 1 (2017) 24-37 Long way home The life history of Chinese-Indonesian migrants in the Netherlands1 YUMI KITAMURA ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to trace the modern history of Indonesia through the experience of two Chinese Indonesians who migrated to the Netherlands at different periods of time. These life stories represent both postcolonial experiences and the Cold War politics in Indonesia. The migration of Chinese Indonesians since the beginning of the twentieth century has had long history, however, most of the previous literature has focused on the experiences of the “Peranakan” group who are not representative of various other groups of Chinese Indonesian migrants who have had different experiences in making their journey to the Netherlands. This paper will present two stories as a parallel to the more commonly known narratives of the “Peranakan” experience. Abstract: This paper discusses the role of function of Sasak folklore, especially verbal folklores, in teaching and maintaining Sasak language naturally. ‘Sasak’ is a name of an ethnic group exisiting in Lombok island using Sasak language as mother tongue. Based on qualitative research, Sasak people is usually ‘planting’ (teaching) the Sasak language as their mother tongue through folklore, especially verbal Sasak folklores. Those are such as: pinje panje, children playing songs (elate), lullabying songs (bedede), or story telling (waran). This activity mostly happens in informal form in any kind of occasions. This phenomenon is usually undergone by mothers to their children or by other children to their friends in their own communities. Hence, it is also found that this model of learning is very effective in maintaining the Sasak language as mother tongue and Sasak culture. Finally, based on the research, most of the informants acknowledge that they still well remember all the folklores they played in childhood. They even still love their Sasak backgrounds. Therefore, Sasak folklore is a good tool in naturally teaching and/or maintaining Sasak language. 1 INTRODUCTION taking a role as mother-tongue for that group. The Wetu Telu tradition has been inherited down from many generations by Sasak ethnic groups, and has experienced a cultural endeavour in the era of globalisation, because it was considered not in accordance with the teachings of Islam in general. The endeavour arises between the ethnic Sasak group who want to maintain the Wetu Telu tradition as a local identity and those who want to apply Islamic culture in general. The endeavour raises concerns about the extinction of the Wetu Telu tradition and the Sasak ethnic group losing their identity. The issue that arises in this case is how Sasak people can maintain their local wisdom so as not to lose their identity. To analyse and explain the Wetu Telu culture as a local identity of the Sasak ethnicity, qualitative research methods were used to reveal the Wetu Telu cultural meaning as a Sasak identity and explain the rise of Sasak local wisdom in Lombok in the midst of globalisation. Qualitative research methods in this case use the historical paradigm, the theory of multiculturalism and the theory of hegemony. This research will be able to reveal the background of the Wetu Telu culture, the endeavour of identity and the rise of the Wetu Telu as the Sasak identity. -

This study used qualitative interpretive design in order to find answers issues, namely background of establishing a cohesion bond between two ethnic communities. Based on the result of this research, it is found that there are four influential factors, namely cultural contact between Balinese ethnic and Sasak ethnic communities during the historic period, the implementation of Balinese culture and Sasak culture in Lombok, cultural adaptation of each cultural identity, and construction of informal cultural ties as medium of interethnic communication. Like other tribes in the world, Sasak tribe has a variety of traditional cuisines that can also function as functional foods, including the beverages or drinks. The purpose of this study was to explore the Sasak traditional drinks that function as functional foods, from ethnobotany aspects. This study used the etnosains method, namely purposive sampling method which includes observation, interview, documentation and literature review. There were 8 types of Sasak traditional drinks that are commonly consumed by the public as functional drinks, which can provide positive benefits for the human body. There was also an observation on plants used in the preparation of the drinks. Sasak traditional drinks basically have the potential as functional drinks, and further multidisciplinary studies are needed. This study is one form of preservation efforts on culture, plant resources and traditional botanical knowledge related to its use in human health. Thalassemia can lead to severe transfusion-dependent anemia, and it is the most common genetic disorder in Malaysia. This paper aims to determine the prevalence of thalassemia in the Kadazandusuns, the largest indigenous group in Sabah, East Malaysia. α- and β-thalassemia were confirmed in 33.6% and 12.8%, of the individuals studied respectively. The high prevalence of α-and β-thalassemia in the Kadazandusuns indicates that thalassemia screening, genetic counseling, and prenatal diagnosis should be included as part of their healthcare system. -

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of adverbial verb constructions in Truku Seediq, an Austronesian language of Taiwan, and explores historical and typological implications. I will demonstrate that all Truku adverbial verbs have the ability to occur in two distinct constructions: (i) serial verb constructions in which they behave like stative verbs, and (ii) constructions in which they behave on a par with preverbs. -
Reduplication and Odor in Four Formosan Languages*
LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS 11.1:99-126, 2010 2010-0-011-001-000300-1 Reduplication and Odor in Four Formosan Languages* Amy Pei-jung Lee National Dong Hwa University This paper is a morpho-semantic study of olfactory terms and linguistic expressions for describing odor in four Formosan languages, including Kavalan, Truku Seediq, Paiwan, and Thao, based on the author’s firsthand data. It shows that apart from very limited olfactory terms, reduplication is the most common means for manifesting the meaning of ‘(having) a smell / an odor of X’ in these languages. The formation usually involves a prefix which is found similar in these languages, in Kavalan as su-, Truku Seediq as s-, Paiwan as sa-, and Thao as tu-. Two parameters are taken into consideration: first, the selective restriction on the relevant lexical items for the reduplicative construction, and secondly, the reduplicative patterns in each language. It is proposed that the reason why odor is manifested by reduplication is due to its association with both iterative aspects and plurality. Having a smell is a continuing process, and it is mentally perceptible so that there should be enough entities in order to produce a persistent smell. Inspired by experimental studies in psychology on odor recognition and identification, which suggest a poverty of linguistic representation for odor perception, this paper discusses similarities and differences regarding how each language indicates such a meaning, as well as the semantic implications drawn from the comparison.
