I am delighted to introduce the Health and Wellbeing Week Brochure and I would like to acknowledge and thank all participating agencies and organisations throughout the County. I would encourage everyone to get involved in the planned activities and to help make Health and Wellbeing Week 2017 a success. One of my themes as Mayor for the coming year is a “A Healthy County – Mind, Body and Community Spirit. I want to help people develop healthy habits and to progress the many initiatives already out there. Last October, South Dublin County Council achieved Healthy County status as part of the World Health Organisation’s Healthy Cities and Counties of Ireland Network, which highlights the progressive efforts that have been made here in South Dublin in recent years. The Council’s work has also been recognised by the 2 Mayor’s Introduction award it achieved in the Health and Wellbeing category in the Chambers Ireland “Excellence in Local Government Awards”. We can build on this with your support. Health and Wellbeing week is a great opportunity for young and older people of all abilities and interests to participate in a range of activities and events, which encourages well–being and the development of healthy thinking, eating and exercise. There are great opportunities for people to get involved throughout all our communities; there is literally something for everybody. As well as the once–off events listed, it is great to see a range of ongoing programmes being launched. I want to build on these during my term and see what can be done to keep people focused on good habits throughout the entire year. In the meantime, please enjoy this exciting week and I hope you find something interesting that will help improve your own health and wellbeing. Le gach dea ghuí, Paul Gogarty Mayor of South Dublin South Dublin County Council 3 Health & Wellbeing Week 2017 Health and Wellbeing Week Chief Executive Message In late 2016 we secured status of Healthy Ireland County here in South Dublin, the process ourselves and partner agencies began in late 2014. Health & Wellbeing is now a fundamental consideration in everything we do. We believe that our annual Health and Wellbeing Week is a great opportunity for South Dublin County Council and its partner agencies to raise awareness of the many services and facilities available to our citizens aimed at improved health. A number of programmes that were promoted as part of the week are still ongoing including We Can Quit (women supporting women to stop smoking). The Health and Wellbeing of our population is a measure of our success as a society. As a local authority we influence physical and mental wellbeing through social inclusion events, as lead agency in interagency initiatives, recreation activities, library services, employment creation, housing supply, community infrastructure and financial supports. South Dublin County Council is very conscious of its role in this regard and continues to promote the well being of our citizens as a priority objective of service delivery. 4 Chief Executive Message The Healthy Ireland Frame Work 2013–2015 states: “The impact of positive social interaction cannot be underestimated. Social Interaction and supporting Social Connectedness and involvement in community life are a keystone to empowering people at the individual level and building strong communities for health and wellbeing.” This week will give people at risk of exclusion opportunities to get out and get involved in activities and develop improved awareness of physical and mental wellbeing. The week includes a series of events, initiatives and programmes designed to help attendees achieve their wellness goals and equip them with everything needed to lead a happy, healthy lifestyle.
