The hydrothermal synthesis of a mcallisterite2 (Mg (B6O7(OH)6)2⋅9(H2O)) mineral at low temperatures was characterized. For ∘ this purpose, several reaction temperatures (0–70 C) and reaction times (30–240 min) were studied. Synthesized minerals were subjected to X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and Raman spectroscopies and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additionally, experimental analyses of boron trioxide (B2O3) content and reaction yields were performed. Furthermore, thermal gravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) were used for the determination of thermal dehydration kinetics. According to the XRD results, mcallisterite, which has a powder diffraction file (pdf) number of “01-070- 1902,” was formed under certain reaction parameters. Pure crystalline mcallisterite had diagnostic FT-IR and Raman vibration ∘ peaks and according to the SEM analysis, for the minerals which were synthesized at 60 C and 30 min of reaction time, particle size was between 398.30 and 700.06 nm. Its B2O3 content and reaction yield were 50.80 ± 1.12%and85.80 ± 0.61%, respectively. Finally, average activation energies (conversion values () that were selected between 0.1 and 0.6) were calculated as 100.40 kJ/mol and 98.31 kJ/mol according to Ozawa and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) methods, respectively. 1. • Reuse of Magnesium Wastes in Hydrothermal Synthesis of a Magnesium Borate Mineral: Admontite
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal March 2018, Vol.17, No. 3, 537-544 http://www.eemj.icpm.tuiasi.ro/; http://www.eemj.eu “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University of Iasi, Romania REUSE OF MAGNESIUM WASTES IN HYDROTHERMAL SYNTHESIS OF A MAGNESIUM BORATE MINERAL: ADMONTITE Azmi Seyhun Kipcak, Fatma Tugce Senberber, Emek Moroydor Derun, Sabriye Piskin Chemical Engineering Department of Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul, 34210, Turkey Abstract Magnesium wastes are among the gradually ascending and therefore challenging metal wastes, which are produced by many industrial activities. The purpose of this study is the usage of magnesium waste, a raw material in magnesium borate production by hydrothermal synthesis. Boron sources (boric acid (H3BO3) and boron oxide (B2O3)) react with magnesium wastes in order to synthesize the magnesium borate mineral of admontite (MgO(B2O3)3ꞏ7(H2O)). In addition to the synthesis from waste magnesium, magnesium oxide (MgO) and B2O3 are also used to produce magnesium borates, in order to compare the results. Techniques of X- ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy disperse (SEM-EDX) are used for further characterization analysis. The products’ boron oxide contents and overall yields are also calculated. According to the results, synthesized minerals are identified as admontite (MgO(B2O3)3ꞏ7(H2O)), mcallisterite (Mg2(B6O7(OH)6)2ꞏ9(H2O)) and magnesium borate hydrate (MgB6O7(OH)6ꞏ3(H2O)). It is seen that magnesium borates could be obtained as a mixture of different types of magnesium borate minerals or pure magnesium borate. A pure magnesium borate mineral of admontite is synthesized at the reaction temperature of 100oC and the reaction time of 240 minutes using magnesium waste (W) and both H3BO3 (W) and B2O3 (B).

  • IMA–CNMNC Approved Mineral Symbols
Mineralogical Magazine (2021), 85, 291–320 doi:10.1180/mgm.2021.43 Article IMA–CNMNC approved mineral symbols Laurence N. Warr* Institute of Geography and Geology, University of Greifswald, 17487 Greifswald, Germany Abstract Several text symbol lists for common rock-forming minerals have been published over the last 40 years, but no internationally agreed standard has yet been established. This contribution presents the first International Mineralogical Association (IMA) Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) approved collection of 5744 mineral name abbreviations by combining four methods of nomenclature based on the Kretz symbol approach. The collection incorporates 991 previously defined abbreviations for mineral groups and species and presents a further 4753 new symbols that cover all currently listed IMA minerals. Adopting IMA– CNMNC approved symbols is considered a necessary step in standardising abbreviations by employing a system compatible with that used for symbolising the chemical elements. Moscow.: Ocean Pictures, 2004. volume 39, 172 pages, 92 color images. EditorinChief Margarita I. Novgorodova. Publication of Fersman Mineralogical Museum, Russian Academy of Science. Articles of the volume give a new data on komarovite series minerals, jarandolite, kalsilite from Khibiny massif, pres- ents a description of a new occurrence of nikelalumite, followed by articles on gemnetic mineralogy of lamprophyl- lite barytolamprophyllite series minerals from IujaVritemalignite complex of burbankite group and mineral com- position of raremetaluranium, berrillium with emerald deposits in Kuu granite massif of Central Kazakhstan. Another group of article dwells on crystal chemistry and chemical properties of minerals: stacking disorder of zinc sulfide crystals from Black Smoker chimneys, silver forms in galena from Dalnegorsk, tetragonal Cu21S in recent hydrothermal ores of MidAtlantic Ridge, ontogeny of spiralsplit pyrite crystals from Kursk magnetic Anomaly. Museum collection section of the volume consist of articles devoted to Faberge lapidary and nephrite caved sculp- tures from Fersman Mineralogical Museum. The volume is of interest for mineralogists, geochemists, geologists, and to museum curators, collectors and ama- teurs of minerals. Belakovskiy Fersman Mineralogical Museum Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. [email protected]; http://www.fmm.ru Between 1997 and 2001, 3414 new mineral specimens were introduced into the inventories of the five major col- lections of the Fersman Mineralogical Museum RAS. These specimens represent 980 different mineral species from 73 countries. Among these, 372 are new species for the Museum, including 83 that were discovered dur- ing this period. Museum staff members discovered sixteen of these. Three of the new species were discovered in previously cataloged museum pieces that were acquired as other minerals. Of the minerals obtained, 93 are either type specimens or fragments of type specimens. By the end of 2001 the number of valid mineral species in the Museum fund reach 2700. Of the newly acquired items, 1197 were donated by 230 persons and by 12 organizations; 610 specimens were collected by the Museum staff, 600 were exchanged, 334 bought, 521 reg- istered from previously collected materials, and 152 were obtained in other ways. A review of the new acquisi- tions is presented by mineral species, geography, acquisition type and source. The review is accompanied by a list of new species for the Museum along with a want list. 27 color photos. There is a common misconception on the part frame.htm).
