The Huskies built a 15-point lead a little more than 12 minutes into the first half, and Tennessee could never recover. The Lady Vols, who had been averaging 80 points per game, took 13 min- utes to reach 10 points in the national title game. The Huskies were led by the Final Four’s most outstanding player, Shea Ralph, who set the tone for her team defensively with six steals and added 15 points and seven assists to the victory. Connecticut earned its second national title five years to the day after its first championship win in 1995. The Huskies finished the season with a 36-1 record and avenged their only loss of the sea- son at the hands of the Lady Vols, February 2, 72-71. All-Tournament Team: Ralph was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Sue Bird, Svetlana Abrosimova and Asjha Jones. Tennessee’s Tamika Catchings was also honored. BROWN The Courier-Journal -. f" BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - It's hard to believe, but the 6- foot-7 teen-ager working in Wal-Mart's pet section didn't play basketbaU. Chris Marcus grew another three inches be tween his sophomore and /"un ior years of high schoo in Charlotte, N.C., but he still was nothing more than the tallest clerk in the store. In a few short years he has gone from being stared at in Wal-Mart to being checked out by National Basketball Associ atian scouts. Marcus, now a 7·1 college junior, has led Western Ken tucky into its first NCAA Tour nament appearance since 1995. The Hilitoppers (24-6) will face Florida (23-6) at 3 p.m. EST Friday in a South Region open er in New Orleans. Marcus still finds it all hard to believe.
