SUMMER NOTEBOOK

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS UNDER TAYLOR » Georgia continued its upward trend under head coach Joni Taylor last season. The Lady Bulldogs finished tied with South Carolina for second place in the final SEC standings after being picked eighth in the preseason coaches’ poll. It’s a trend that goes all the way back to Taylor’s first year, when her squad was picked ninth and finished sixth. Then, in 2016-17, Georgia was picked 12th and finished eighth. SEC Finishes Under Coach Joni Taylor Year Record Preseason SEC Coaches Poll Final SEC Standings 2015-16 21-10, 9-7 SEC 9th 6th 2016-17 16-15, 7-9 SEC 12th 8th 2017-18 26-7, 12-4 SEC 8th 2nd

TOP SCORERS RETURN » Four of the Lady Bulldogs’ top-5 scorers and 70 percent of the team’s scoring returns to lead Georgia this season. Head Coach Joni Taylor and her team do lose leading scorer Mackenzie Engram and her 12.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, but return starters Caliya Robinson (2018 All-SEC Team), Que Morrison (2018 SEC All-Freshman Team) and Taja Cole (sixth in SEC in assists).

ROBINSON AMONG SEC’S BEST » Georgia senior Caliya Robinson is arguably the most complete returning player in the league as the only returner to rank in the top- 20 in scoring, rebounding, blocks and steals a year ago. Robinson is also one of only two returning players in the SEC, joining Teaira McCowan from Mississippi State, to rank in the top-20 in scoring and top-10 in rebounding last season.

The Marietta native enters her final year in Athens fourth in the Georgia record book for career blocked shots. Robinson has totaled 218 blocks in her career and needs just 79 to tie Tawana McDonald’s school record of 297 career blocks. Last season, Robinson finished just two shy of the single-season mark with 101 -- the second-best total in the SEC.

SUMMER NOTEBOOK DEFENSE TRAVELS YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT » Georgia’s mantra in 2017-18 was Defense Travels. The Lady Bulldogs put up impressive defensive numbers, finishing first in the SEC in field-goal percentage defense (35.1 percent), second in blocked shots (196), second in turnovers forced (18.6 per game) and second in scoring defense (57.6 ppg). Those defensive numbers are reflective of Coach Taylor’s first three seasons as head coach. In her tenure, Georgia is 25-0 when holding opponents to 50 points or less and has been one of the leading defensive teams in the league. Year Scoring Defense/SEC Rank FG % Defense/ SEC Rank 3-pt. MOST WINS IN OVER A DECADE » The team’s 26-7 overall record last year marked Georgia’s most wins in a single season since 2006-07. The Lady Bulldogs stormed out to a 12-1 start at the conclusion of non- conference play and then defeated three ranked SEC opponents to finish with a 12-4 league record.

FRESHMEN ARRIVE ON CAMPUS » Georgia’s freshman class of Kaila Hubbard (Jonesboro, Ga.), Caitlin Hose (Hazel Green, Ala.) and Donnetta Johnson (Queens, NY) moved into their dorms on May 31 and have been busy preparing for their first seasons in Athens. Below is a brief look at Georgia’s three freshmen. KAILA HUBBARD Hubbard is a native of Jonesboro, Ga. who was ranked as the No. 14 overall wing prospect in the country according to ESPN.com. SUMMER NOTEBOOK NCAA TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO ATHENS » One of Coach Taylor’s goals when she took the job three years ago was to get the NCAA tournament first and second rounds back in Athens. The Lady Bulldogs reached that target this past season as the team hosted in Athens for the first time 2003 -- a span of 15 years. The Athens region offered plenty of excitement as the only first and second round site to have four teams all ranked in the top-25.

2017 ROOKIES MAKE IMPACT, LOOKING FOR MORE » There is no doubt that Georgia’s 2017 signing class, which ranked ninth nationally according to ESPN, had an impactful first year in Athens. Three of Georgia’s top-5 scorers a year ago were newcomers Que Morrison, Taja Cole and Gabby Connally. In addition, Morrison and Cole combined to start 65 games as Cole finished ranked sixth in the SEC with 135 total assists.

Maya Caldwell and Malury Bates also made tremendous strides in their freshmen seasons. Caldwell played in each of Georgia’s 33 games, scoring in double figures four times. Bates, who missed the first six games due to a stress fracture in her right foot, saw increased minutes and looks to take on an even larger role during the upcoming season.

STAITI TO SEE FIRST ACTION IN 2018 » Jenna Staiti, the 2016 Miss Georgia Basketball and state Gatorade Player of the Year, returns home after transferring from Maryland and sitting out a year ago. Staiti, who stands at 6-foot-6 brings another post presence to complement Caliya Robinson and Malury Bates. She will also help fill a void left by Bianca Blanaru, who decided to forgo her final season to pursue her career in criminal justice.

Staiti put together a stellar prep career at West Forsyth High School in Cumming, Ga. She averaged 26.2 points, 13.7 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game on her way to being named a WBCA High School All-American. She was rated as the No. 17 overall player nationally and No. 1 in the state of Georgia in the 2016 class by ESPN.

WHERE LADIES BECOME LEGENDS » The Georgia Lady Bulldog basketball program, long among the most respected in the nation, continues to thrive under Coach Taylor. Taylor, just the second full-time head coach in Georgia’s illustrious history, is building on the rich tradition of Lady Bulldog basketball. She has compiled two 20-win seasons in three years and guided her squad to a 26-7 record in 2017-18.

Her success is emblematic of the long and storied history of the Lady Bulldogs. Georgia has received invitations to all but four NCAA Tournaments, the second-best tally of any school in the nation. The Lady Bulldogs have made the most of those bids, finishing as NCAA runner-up in 1985 and 1996 and advancing to five Final Fours, 11 Elite Eights and 20 Sweet 16s.
