The wall in which the stone arch is set is known as the Labourer’s Wall and it is where men lined up 5 for work on May Day. When a railway tunnel was dug underneath the village to take the train from Pyle to Porthcawl, human remains were found at the east end of the green. It is thought that it was a 4 graveyard associated with the old Celtic church or the church the monks used at Noge Court Grange. A Fleur De Lys is set into the wall at this point. VIEWPOINT! From here you can see the Rose and Crown, the Swan and the Farmers Arms public houses. 9 2 The Rose and Crown takes its name from two cottages that stood 3 on this site, Rose Cottage and Crown Cottage. Crown Cottage was the last alehouse to be licensed in the Bridgend area. 2 You will exit onto Pyle Road. Turn left and walk along Pyle Road. As you walk 1 along Pyle Road you will pass Ty Talbot Farm on your left hand side. 3 Ty Talbot Farm. The history of this farm goes back to the 16th Century. At the bottom of the incline you will see St David’s Well on your left hand side. 4 St David’s Well was first mentioned in a 12th Century grant of William Earl of Gloucester. The water from the well is reputed to have curative powers and had sanctity bestowed on it during a visit by Wales’ patron saint, St. David. Take care walking along Moor Lane as it can be very narrow. Walk on the right and utilise any verges where possible. Just after St David’s Well you will come to a fork in the road. Continue to the left following Moor Lane. You will then pass under a railway bridge of a disused railway line. 5 Nottage Holt. Moor Lane runs almost parallel with the old Porthcawl to Pyle railway line. On the left hand side of the lane the remains of Nottage Holt can be seen. This was referred to as the Golf Station and travellers had to notify the driver in advance if they wanted to alight at Nottage. The bridge which you pass under on this walk is known as the Cuckoo Bridge and it used to carry the Great Western line over Moor Lane. Continue along Moor Lane. You will pass a camping and caravan park on your left. Very close to this part of the route on your right hand side is a pond area called 6 Pwll y Mwr which is an important habitat for all three native newt species including the Great Crested Newt. Great Crested Newts are protected by law, and management work to restore the ponds needs to take account of this. The ponds were formed by a ground water up-welling through a geological fault in the limestone. For further information about the restoration work please contact Porthcawl Town Council. In the field opposite Pwll y Mwr is an old barn which is the remains of an old longhouse. The famous Baptist Minister, Lewis Thomas, resided there. He was the leader of the Calvinistic Baptists and held services at the farm. It is likely that baptisms were held in the ponds. VIEWPOINT! On your right you have views across to the mountains of the Mynydd Margam and views across the golf course to Cornelly Quarry. Continue to follow Moor Lane. As you draw closer to the junction of Moor Lane with West Road you will have views of the sand dunes at Kenfig and of Parc Newydd Farm. 7 Moor Lane has been marked on maps since the 16th Century. It is also the line followed by the Dyffryn Llynfi Tramline along which horse drawn carriages brought coal and iron to Pwll Cawl Bay. On reaching Parc Newydd Farm follow Moor Lane around to the left. On your right you will see Brodawel Adventures. After 30 metres you will reach a junction. Turn left onto West Road. VIEWPOINT! At this point there are views across the fields to Picton Court, Sker House and the Rest at Rest Bay. 8 West Road. This is a busy road which has been in use since the 16th Century. Continue along West Road. As you reach the houses on West Road there is a signed public footpath on your right hand side which you can take to Pink Bay. Continue along the pavement on West Road. You will pass West Park Primary School on your right hand side. 9 West Park School was built in 1971 on the site of a former market garden. Ty Talbot Farm On continuing along West Road you will re-enter the old village of Nottage. Once in the old village take the turning to the left of the village shop. This is Heol y Capel.

    Pyle Garden Centre: Position Statement- C.Patten The Statement is provided at the request of the Inspector and reiterates and adds to the representations made at the Hearing Session and in response to the Councils Position Statement. • A garden centre has been trading for over 35 years in this location and as conceded by the Council the current buildings benefit from an open A1 retail consent and the use of these building to sell A1 goods has continued throughout that period and is continuing today. There is approximately 2250m2 of accommodation. • The sale of goods from these premises, throughout that period has had little impact upon the viability of the current District Centre. It is considered that the establishment has been an important attraction to the District Centre attracting customers from a wide area. The proposed designated Centre has no frontage site, but the inclusion of this site would retain and give the Centre a prime focal point which would enhance its attractiveness. The LDP proposes extending the District Centre to the opposite side of the road to the garden centre because retail occupiers have occupied the buildings at the front of Village Farm Industrial Estate. There would appear to be no reason not to extend the Centre to include all the existing retail uses which have contributed to the vitality of the existing Centre. • In the proposed Pyle District Centre there is little opportunity for further growth. • Whilst it is accepted that the site would be physically capable of accommodating a large convenience store, the council would still retain control over the scale of redevelopment.
