1 Appointment of the Evaluation Committee for the evaluation of suggested collaboration between FIMM/University of Helsinki and VTT in the field of metabolomics (presenter: Kallioniemi)

The Directorship of VTT and the University of Helsinki discussed the possible collaboration between FIMM/University of Helsinki and VTT in the field of metabolomics in May 2013. The Board of FIMM also discussed the concept of such a collaboration at its Strategy Seminar on 5 June 2013. Thereafter Vice Rector and Chair of the Board of FIMM Kimmo Kontula and Di- rector Ritva Dammert (Research Affairs of the University of Helsinki) have led the discussion on behalf of the University, based on the mandate of the former and current Rector Thomas Wilhelmsson and Jukka Kola. VTT representatives in the discussion have been Executive Vice President Kari Larjava and Research Professor Matej Oresic. Summary of the meeting of 13 August 2013 is annexed to the Minutes.

Based on these discussions it has been agreed that the possible reorganization of metabo- lomics to the University of Helsinki will be evaluated by an international Evaluation Commit- tee. Rector Jukka Kola has given the Board of FIMM mandate to appoint the Evaluation Committee comprising of experts suggested by FIMM and VTT. Chair of the SAB of FIMM, Professor Kai Simons has been invited to chair the Committee.

The Evaluation Committee will be asked to: . Give opinion on the suggested collaboration, advantages and synergies, challenges and issues to be taken into account. The intent is to launch a major inter-institutional technol- ogy platform and a major national core facility in metabolomics. . Evaluate Research Professor Matej Oresic as a potential Research Director at FIMM. . Evaluate the current scientific and technological status of the Quantitative Biology and Bioinformatics Group, QBIX Group at VTT (http://sysbio.vtt.fi/; people, technologies, bio- informatics, instrumentation).

Both FIMM/University of Helsinki and VTT will prepare background documentation for the Evaluation Committee before the site visit. In addition, Research Professor Matej Oresic will be asked to provide the same material as FIMM group leaders in the FIMM 5-year Evaluation based on the EMBL model. The site visit will take place on 30—31 October 2013.

The final decision on the possible transfer of the activities from VTT to the FIMM/University of Helsinki will be done at the University level based on the recommendations of the Evaluation Committee and statement of the Board of FIMM.

Proposal: It was suggested that the Board confirms the composition of the Evaluation Committee below approved by the Chair of the SAB, Professor Kai Simons. The experts have confirmed their availability for the evaluation. .
