Published online at www.senckenberg.de/geologica-saxonica on 1 December 2014. Abstract Lutetiella n.gen. is proposed for Lutetiella hartkopfi n. sp. (type species) and L. conica (Prévost 1821) from the Middle Eocene (Lutetian) of the Upper Rhine Graben and Paris Basin, respectively. The protoconch microsculpture of L. hartkopfi n. sp. was occasionally preserved and proved to be a variant of the plesiomorphic hydrobioid pattern. The new genus is tentatively placed in Hydrobiidae. Problems in the classi- fication of hydrobioid fossils are discussed, arising from the dearth of distinguishing shell characters. Previous attributions of L. conica to Assiminea or Peringia are shown to be incorrect. The name Paludina conica Férussac 1814, a senior primary homonym of Paludina conica Prévost 1821, and denoting an unidentifiable hydrobioid, threatens the validity of the nameLutetiella conica (Prévost 1821) and should be suppressed. -

Boss 1 and Rudiger Bieler2 ABSTRACT. This is the second part of a series on the German zoologist Johannes Thiele (1860-1935) and comprises a critical listing of the genus-group taxa which he described as new to malacology. Each of these names is accompanied by author and bibliographic references, original status, type-species with its original binominal spelling and bibliographic source and some data on subsequent taxonomic placements. Thiele introduced a total of 291 such names in the Phylum Mollusca, distributed as follows: 11 Aplacophora; 39 Polyplacophora; 200 Gastropoda (138 Prosobranchia; 20 Opisthobranchia and 42 Pulmonata); 31 Bivalvia; 10 Cephalopoda; there were no new scaphopod or monoplacophoran names. Of these, later authors recognized as valid 85 at the generic level, 110 at the subgeneric level; 71 are considered to be synonyms, and the remaining 25 are unjustified emendations or errors. INTRODUCTION As part of a series on the scientific contributions of Johannes Thiele, the eminent German zoologist, we provide here an alphabetical listing and analysis of all the genus-group taxa introduced by him in his publications on mollusks as delineated by Bieler & Boss (1989). Quattro specie, appartenenti al genere Alvania Risso, 1826, vengono proposte come nuove. Il materiale studiato proviene da quattro siti di età piacenziana facenti parte di un complesso di calcari organogeni conosciuto con il nome di “spungone”. Tutti i reperti sono alloctoni e riferibili per lo più a biocenosi della piattaforma continentale. Abstract The authors examined 29 taxa of species from arganogenic arenites of Piacenzian age, part of a sedimentary complex known as “spungone”. The material studied comes from 4 sites where the fossil association consists of elements carried from several biotic communities. Four species are proposed as new. Alvania amoena n. sp. Shell of small size; protoconch paucispiral with a micro-sculpture of thin threads divided by wide intervals. Teleoconch of 3.5 plain convex whorls, with deep sutures and a sculpture of many spiral cords crossed by many orthocline ribs. Aperture slightly ovoid, inside smooth. Outer lip thickened by a varix; peristome continuous. Alvania granosa n. sp. Shell strong, small, ovate-conic in shape. Protoconch paucispiral: the first whorl shows a sculpture of thin threads with very wide intervals; the second shows one whorl (diameter = 320 μm) with irregular spiral sculpture in the upper half and, in the lower half, three thin spirals divided by wide intervals. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Epizoic molluscs on 49 specimens of the soft-bottom megabenthic bivalve Pinna nobilis Linné, 1758 sampled in the Straits of Messina (Central Mediterranean), were investigated. Univariate indices of biodiversity, based on richness, abundance/evenness and taxonomic relatedness were calculated on mollusc taxocommunity in accordance with bathymetry and shell size of the P. nobilis. Furthermore, a multivariate composition of the characterizing epizoic taxa, and the corresponding functional role were investigated; the contribution of basibionts in increasing mollusc diversity on a small scale (soft bottom habitat/biotope), as well as a large scale (regional biogeography) was also tested. Epizoic mollusc assemblage replicates some major characteristics of hard bottom assemblages which are tied to ephemeral photophilous algae, but also displays some peculiar typological and taxonomic characteristics, probably related to the selective effect of the living substratum. Gastropod to bivalve ratio ranges from 4.0 to 5.6:1 in number of species, and from 5.6 to 12.6:1 in abundance, in accordance to shell size. Bittium reticulatum (Da Costa, 1778), Rissoella inflata Locard, 1892 and Gibbula turbinoides (Deshayes, 1835) are the prevalent species, but percentage similarity analysis and non-parametric correlation emphasize at least two multispecies subsets, which contribute to typologically and functionally characterize the mollusc taxocommunity. -
