Mike, as most all of anniversaries respectively. you know, is one of the owners of TCI and has worked with John since the beginning. Mike is one of those rare people that will do anything it takes, Truck Centers has been always family focused; work on truck concessions with the sales guys, fight for policy dollars for an attribute that I believe has allowed us to have customers, call for past due accounts, attend countless industry meetings a team with longevity and much lower turnover and events, work on service issues internally on the customers’ behalf, host than similar businesses. TCI_Ads_New.indd 5 6/15/17 6:08 PM SCR uses a combination of Urea (32.5%) and water (67.5%) - Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). The DEF is sprayed into the exhaust flow just before Ask the Technician: the SCR catalyst and the heat causes the DEF to change to Ammonia Perfect gas, the Ammonia and the NOx then react with the SCR catalyst and create water and nitrogen. It is important to note that the chemical reaction is dependent on the metal surface of the catalyst and all three Harmony. NOx Conversion elements are needed to make this work. Efficiency We know what is being converted but how do we measure the conversion efficiency? With the NOx sensor of course. BluTec technology uses an inlet NOx sensor to measure raw NOx output from the engine Faults Explored and an outlet NOx sensor to measure what is left after the catalytic magic has taken place. In a good performing system, we are looking for a 75-85% conversion efficiency average.

So, what can cause a low conversion Efficiency?

Failed NOx Sensor or Wiring. Although NOx sensors do have a high failure rate, we cannot just assume a sensor failure. The wiring between the sensor and Aftertreatment Control Module could be damaged. Many times, the reading that the sensor is transmitting is correct and the problem is within the conversion process itself.

EGR or Fuel System Problems. Check for fault codes or symptoms related to EGR or fuel systems. The engine could be producing too much NOx for our system to handle if one of the other systems has a fault.

[[ Poor Quality DEF Fluid. DEF should be tested for Urea concentration of 32.5% using a refractometer and for contamination using test strip (Part #A0005850202).

Too Much or Not Enough DEF Delivery. Not enough DEF is a no brainer, if we do not have an ammonia molecule for every NOx molecule, we will have some NOx not getting processed. But why would too much What happens when two world-class companies combine their expertise to optimize fuel economy and performance? DEF be a problem? Our NOx sensor cannot discern the difference You get the SmartAdvantage Powertrain, the most effi cient powertrain in line-haul operation. SmartAdvantage Powertrain In 2002, we saw the introduction of the EGR system to deliver exhaust The Most Fuel-Effi cient Powertrain You Can Buy. to the combustion process thus lowering cylinder temperature causing a decrease in NOx emissions. The 2007 regulations required the DOC and DPF system to capture and regenerate particulate matter in order to meet the EPA standard of .01g/hp per hr. Then 2010 requirements demanded that the NOx level decrease to the point that EGR increases alone could not remedy. There are some problems with EGR because exhaust gas contains carbon, which is abrasive, and, in large concentrations, can cause premature engine wear. Exhaust gas cools the cylinder temperature by filling the cylinder with a substance that contains no fuel or oxygen; so, while it reduces emissions, it also reduces power and efficiency. To mitigate the power robbing EGR but still meet emissions standards, BluTec was introduced. BluTec is Daimler’s brand of Selective Catalytic Reduction or SCR. © 2017 Eaton Corporation.
