During a trip in December 2003 and January 2004 the author collected on these two islands at various places. In the last years KISHIDA (1992a, 1992b, 1993, 1995, 2000a, 2000b, 2001 & 2003) worked very intensively with Agaristinae and also with the genus Mimeusemia BUTLER, 1875. Some years earlier KIRIAKOFF (1977) published a systematic monography of the Palaearctic and Oriental Agaristinae. Additionally RABENSTEIN & SPEIDEL (1995) reported some details of the life history and biology of some Agaristinae species. SPRINGS AND SEEPAGES - Sheet 5 Managing springs and seepages on coastal cliffs Springs and seepages are important for coastal cliff invertebrates. Over half of the species restricted to soft cliffs in the UK are associated with freshwater micro-habitats1. A range of freshwater habitats are provided by groundwater seepages on cliffs, from spring-fed streams to mossy trickles to damp ground, pools, swamp and carr. Insect Poetics: Or, How James Grainger's
“Insect Poetics: Or, How James Grainger’s Fraught Personifications Presage Enlightenments Not Taken” M. Allewaert, University of Wisconsin-Madison Abstract: Tracking the insectophilia of James Grainger’s The Sugar-Cane, this article charts two modes of personification in the eighteenth century: metropolitan personification, which focused on animating affects and worked to connect diversity into systems, and colonial personification (or insect poetics), which focused on partiality and worked to disconnect systems, casting partitioning as the prelude to organization. While the metropolitan mode of personification is entirely in keeping with Enlightenment thought, Grainger’s insect poetics develops from within it yet is neither part of the Enlightenment nor of modernity that followed on it. This untimely insect poetics is apposite to our own time. I. i Since the recuperation to the canon of Scottish-born poet and physician James Grainger’s work, scholars have concentrated on Book 4 of his West Indian neogeorgic The Sugar-Cane (1764) as the portion of his oeuvre with the most contemporary relevance. Here Grainger finally turns from discussions of what seem entirely prosaic topics like the care of West-Indian soil (Book 1), threats to the cane crop (Book 2), and the conversion of raw material to commodities (Book 3) to take up a problem that if it strikes readers as equally unpoetic is at least of interest to twenty-first-century audiences. Here in Book 4 the poem focuses on the African-born slave population that cultivated the sugar crop, a topic relevant to scholars working to track the lives of those subjected within an emerging modernity. -

Based on the study of approximately 400 specimens, we give an overview of the systematics and taxonomy, distribution, dispersal power, and habitat preferences of the carabids belonging to the tribes Anthiini, Helluonini, Dryptini, and Zuphiini in the southern Levant (Egypt: Sinai, Israel and Jordan). We provide identification keys for the members of the given taxa in this region. Eleven species of the Zuphi- itae sensu Ober & Maddison (2008) have previously been published from the southern Levant. -

Received: 29 November 2020; Accepted: 11 December 2020; Published: 14 December 2020 Abstract: Changes in the structure of ground beetle communities indicate environmental stability or instability influenced by, e.g., urbanization, agriculture, and forestry. It can affect flight capability and ellipsoid biovolume (EV) of ground beetles. Therefore, we analyzed ground beetles in various habitats. In the course of the period from 2015 to 2017, we recorded in pitfall traps 2379 individuals (1030 males and 1349 females) belonging to 52 species at six localities (two rural, two suburban, two urban). We observed the decrease in the average EV value and morphometric characters (length, height, and width of the body) of ground beetles in the direction of the rural–suburban–urban gradient. Our results also suggest a decrease in EV of apterous and brachypterous species and an increase in macropterous species in the urban and suburban landscapes near agricultural fields. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. Building on ethnographic fieldworkand educational interventions in two farming communities in the Northeast of Brazil, we explore the potential of science education to mediate between traditional and academic knowledge. While traditional knowledge shapes agricultural practices and interactions with the environment in the villages of Coraçao~ de Maria and Retiro, academic knowledge is emphasized in biology education. On the basis of philosophical debates about “partial overlaps” between epistemologies, ontologies and value systems, we analyze relations between traditional and academic ecological knowledge in these communities and argue that they can inform reflectivepractices in intercultural dialogue.
