US ANNUAL REPORT to members 2009

letter to our members

Dear Member, Our sport has enjoyed a long history of excellent competition and sportsmanship on the water. Sailing is special because it lasts a lifetime, connects the generations, and is available to everyone. Our members, volunteers, Board of Directors, and staff have been working hard to improve sailing at every level. We are happy to report that there are many bright spots in sailing today. Junior sailing is vibrant, over 400 high schools now have varsity sailing programs, 214 colleges field active sailing teams, our US SAILING membership is growing, community sailing centers are being formed all across America, and our sailors have excelled internationally. Over the past year American sailors have won world championships in many classes including: , 505, Moth, Farr 40, Team Race, Star, Lightning, 2.4 meter, Melges 24, the DN and the America’s Cup. And second place in the and J-24. US SAILING ended fiscal year 2009 with strong financial results: an operating surplus for the fifth consecutive year, record giving to our annual appeal, and we have no debt. The generosity of our donors has made a tremendous difference, which we greatly appreciate. At US SAILING our goal is to provide leadership, integrity, and advancement for the sport of sailing. We have many initiatives underway to improve our sport. We are hosting a National Club Summit April 2-3, 2011. We are inviting every yacht club in America to send representatives. We continue to improve our Racing Rules of Sailing and we have initiated a review of our handicap systems. We are happy to report that our US SAILING Championships are attracting highly competitive sailors and participation is growing. The most important thing any of us can do is to simply spend time on the water, volunteer for any aspect of the sport and to help others enjoy their time under sail. We thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you on the water. Sincerely,

Gary Jobson Charlie Leighton President Executive Director US SAILING leadership

communication & outreach

COMMUNICATIONS We have made significant advancements in the content, presentation and delivery of our member communications. • e-USSAILING Weekly Newsletter has over 32,000 subscribers. • e-USSAILING’s Quarterdeck Newsletter for organizational members has over 2,500 subscribing clubs (representing 250,000 sailors) and growing. US SAILING’s social media channels, Facebook and Twitter, launched in 2009 with overwhelming popularity. These social media outlets have provided US SAILING with a new forum to engage and interact with our members and the general sailing community on breaking news and resources. US SAILING continues to ramp up its video coverage to highlight our teams, championships, college sailing and other special events. OUTREACH Through the generosity of the John B. and Nelly Llanos Kilroy Foundation, US SAILING partnered with the Community Boating Center in Providence, RI to develop a pilot program for underprivileged youth. The unique curriculum used sailing topics to teach life lessons such as teamwork, math, the environment, and literature. This program will continue to develop in 2010 with a goal of national expansion.
