\n\ HIM!MIX OF PREFACE By the Author.

This fourth (1944) edition of the Parlophone "Rhythm-Style" Booklet Includes all new records Issued In the Parlophone " Rhythm-Style " and other and Series up to and including December, 1943.

Also added to It are the Bessie Smith Memorial Album and a number of titles previously in the Columbia " Super-Swing Music " Series, but recently transferred to the Parlophone ** Swing " Series. (See " Swing " Series, Nos. 5 to 62, inclusive, on pages 37. 38 and 39).

Another departure concerns records withdrawn from the catalogue.

Not only are details given of all records deleted from the catalogue between January, 1942 and January. 1944. so that those possessing copies of them may verify their " per• sonnels " ; In addition, for the same reason, records deleted from the catalogue between January, 19-10. and December, 1941, which, because of their unavailability, were erased rom ths 1942 edition of this Booklet, have been reinstated In this new 1944 edition.

These deletions are Identified In both the main numerical and Index to Titles sections by a black spot (• ) printed In the main section in front of the Artistes' names and In the Index to Titles section following the catalogue numbers.

There are two more Innovations:

Firstly, many hitherto unavailable recording dates of early recordings have been traced out and are now given for the first time.

Secondly, for the benefit of those wishing to ascertain at a glance the various com• binations with which the various musicians have recorded, and the approximate periods during which they were members of, or (in the case of " pick-up " groups) recorded with, the said combinations, this information has been provided (where known) In the index to Artistes section.

So much for what It is hoped ma; be described as the good side.

It must be confessed, however, that in spite of all the endeavours to unearth them. It has been found, for reasons which will be too obvious to need any explanation, impossible to trace out a number of personnels and recording dates.

For these omissions and such errors as can hardly be avoided in a reference work dealing with over 900 recordings, many of which were made between ten and twenty years ago, and more of which were made in a country 3,000 miles away—and which omis• sions and errors would have been considerably greater had It not been for the valuable help I have received from Mr. Ralph G. V. Venables and Mr. Albert McCarthy, who have made a special study of early jazz personnels—I can only offer my sincerest apologies, and hope that in some future edition it may be possible to supply the missing Information which I am still doing my utmost to discover. EDGAR JACKSON. ">V NUMERICAL CATALOGUE OF

0—Deleted from the Catalogue since December, 1940, and no longer available. No iE.—In the war-time limited Bpace of this booklet it has been found impossible to include the personnels of a number of records deleted from the Catalogue prior to December, 14)40, which records account for missing numbers In the Series sequences.

Where known, recording dates are given following the personnels. It is regretted that it has been impossible to trace the exact recording dates for so many of the records issued in the 1938, 1939 and 1940 " Super Bhythm Style " series, but it may be assumed that moist of them were recorded either during the year of release or the preceding year.
