2021 International Students (Bachelor) Admissions Guide University of the Arts

Founded in 1912, Nanjing University of the Arts has a long history and profound heritage. It is the only comprehensive higher art institution in Province, and it is the earliest and still lasting higher art school founded independently in . The school is located in the main urban area of Nanjing where history and modernity embrace each other. It is in the urban cultural circle where tradition and fashion are blended together. After more than a century of construction and development, Nanjing University of the Arts has kept up with the times. It has grown bigger through life, and has grown stronger through difficulties. It has become very influential as a comprehensive higher art institution domestically and abroad.

Nanjing University of the Arts has 14 schools including Schools of Fine Arts, Music, Design, Media, Movie and Television, Dance, Popular Music, Humanities, Industrial Design, Cultural Industry, College of Vocational and Adult Education, School of International Education and so on. The university has 38 bachelor programs and more than 100 majors. Our university is the only art institution in China that has the right to confer PhD in all five first-tier subjects under the disciplines of art, and post-PhD research stations. In the fourth round of discipline assessment by the Ministry of Education in 2017, all five first-tier subjects ranked among the top six in China. There are currently more than 11,000 students and 1,000 faculty staff. The history of recruiting international students at Nanjing University of the Arts can be traced back to the 1950s. Since the establishment of the School of International Education in 1995, after more than 20 years of development, our school has recruited thousands of international students from more than 80 countries and regions across five continents, and has cultivated high-quality international artists in various majors. International students applying for our university can apply for Chinese Government Scholarship, Jiangsu Provincial Government Scholarship, Nanjing Municipal

I. Application Requirements 1. Non-Chinese citizens who are healthy and hold a valid ordinary passport of a foreign country; applicants under the age of 18 must provide a guardianship certificate. Special note: According to Article 12 [2020] of the Ministry of Education of China, if one or both of the parents are Chinese citizens and live abroad, the child will have foreign nationality at birth, rather than Chinese nationality; or emigrated from China. Starting from 2021, applying as an international student for bachelor degrees of our university, other than meeting the school’s registration requirements, the applicant should also hold a valid foreign passport or nationality certificate for 4 years or more, and records for living abroad for 2 years or more from April 30,2017 to April 30, 2021 (the practical residence abroad for 9 months in a year can be considered as one year, subject to entry and exit stamps). 2. Applicants for bachelor's degree should have graduated from high school or have equivalent academic ability.

II. Application Time Application time for NUA: February 1 - May 30, 2021 Application time for Chinese Government Scholarship: February 1 - April 15, 2021

III.Application Procedure 1. Login to the online registration system of Nanjing University of the Arts (https://nua.17gz.org/member/login.do), fill your information online and upload the application materials. a. Applicants should ensure that all information (especially passport number, passport name, gender, contact number, residential address, etc.) is accurate, otherwise any admission problems will be responsible by the applicants.

2 b. All applicants are asked to choose the "self-financed" option. If they apply for a scholarship later, the School of International Education will change the student category to the corresponding scholarship. c. Applicants should keep the phone open and check the online registration system and E-mail regularly. Our school will contact the applicants based on actual needs. 2. Pay the application fee of 500 RMB by bank transfer. The payment methods are as follows: a. Send the following materials by E-mail ([email protected]) to the School of International Education of Nanjing University of the Arts, must be successfully sent before May 30, 2021: (1) Download the Application Form for Foreign Students of NUA from the university’s application website, print and sign on the last page, then scan and upload. (2) A copy of high school diploma and a copy of the transcript during school (must be stamped by the high school). If the applicant is currently attending, a certificate of

(3) High school unified test scores or copies of internationally accepted standardized test scores, such as UEC/A Level/AP/IB/SAT/ACT, etc. (must be stamped by the high school). (4) A copy of a valid HSK Level 4 certificate with a score of 180 or more; Malaysian independent Chinese secondary school graduates can be exempt from the HSK test. All the above professional materials must be the applicant's own. (7)Copy of passport; (8)Copy of application fee transfer receipt; (9)Copy of valid physical examination certificate within 6 months. Please download the Foreigner Physical Examination Form from the website of the school of International Education, and go to the local hospital to complete the examination. It has to be filled out in Chinese or English and stamped with the official seal of the hospital. (10 ) A copy of the Certificate of No Criminal Records or a character certificate issued by the school. 4. Material submission method: E-mail. The subject of the E-mail is our school application system number + nationality + passport name. Please put all required application materials in a compressed file as RAR or ZIP, and upload it to the attachment of the E-mail. You can also use the WeTransfer website to send application materials (URL: https://wetransfer.com/). Do NOT use Google Drive. 5. Attention:

6 (1) If the application materials such as documents, certificates, etc. are in texts other than Chinese or English, a notarized Chinese or English translation must be attached. It is recommended to go to the embassy (consulate) of the People's Republic of China in your country to have the above materials and their translations notarized. Forms, texts, certificates, etc. with more than two pages should be stamped with a seam seal, or stamped on each page. (2) The applicant is responsible for the authenticity and completeness of the submitted materials. Our school will not accept any false or missing application materials. (3) In special circumstances, our school has the right to request applicants to mail original paper materials for further review and confirmation. Regardless of final admission or not, the materials will not be returned.

IV. Admissions Major For the list of bachelor major enrollment for international students in 2021, please visit: https://gjy.nua.edu.cn/859/list.htm. All bachelor majors are taught in Chinese. Each applicant can apply for 1-2 different majors. Those who apply for 2 different majors are required to pay an application fee of 1,000 RMB.

V. Admission and Selection 1. Qualification Our school will review the applicant comprehensively based on foreign identity, high school diploma, academic performance, certificate for HSK 4 or above, professional level, etc. 2. Admission method Our school will select the best candidates based on the applicant's qualification review and comprehensive assessment results. a. The Admissions Review Committee of the School of International Education will comprehensively review the applicant's professional scores, HSK test scores, high school grades, etc., and select the best based on their professional scores.

7 According to the situation, the school may request applicants to provide supplementary materials or conduct telephone/video interviews with applicants. b. The School of International Education will arrange online interviews for applicants from School of Movie and Television (except for majors in Drama and Film Literature, Drama and Film Art Design), School of Music, School of Popular Music, School of Dance. Specific arrangements will be notified by call or E-mail. 3. Applicants can check the admission results through the online registration system and the website of the School International Education in late June. The admission notice and student visa application form for foreigners studying in China will be sent out in July. Those who are not admitted will not be notified separately.

VI. Academic Standard, Length of Study and Degree Award Academic standard for bachelor: 4 years. (5 years in sculpture, musicology, composition and composition technology theory) Length of study: 4-8 years for four-year students, 5-8 years for five-year students. Students who have completed the credits specified in the teaching plan within the maximum length of study, completed the graduation thesis and successfully passed the defense. Those who meet the graduation requirements are allowed to graduate, and given a graduation certificate, and those who meet the requirements for a bachelor's degree will be awarded with a bachelor's degree.

VII. Studying Expense 1. Tuition (will be charged in RMB by each academic year, excluding textbook fees) 25,000 RMB/year, one-time payment at the beginning of each academic year's fall semester. Payment method: cash in RMB or Chinese bank debit card. Tuition fees are non-refundable after payment. Note: If the above tuition fees were adjusted, the final fees approved by the price department shall prevail. 2. Accommodation fee (will be charged in RMB by each semester):

8 One-time paid at the beginning of each semester. a. The school has international student dormitories, and the specific accommodation fees are subject to notice. Students can choose either on-campus accommodation or off-campus accommodation. For details, please refer to Notice for Freshmen. b. Students who are on Chinese Government Scholarship need to follow the school's relevant management regulations for applying off-campus accommodation.

VIII. Scholarship Application and Review 1. Chinese Government Scholarship (Applicants must be under 25 years old) a. Bilateral Program Full scholarship or partial scholarship provided in accordance with educational cooperation and exchange agreements or consensus reached between China and relevant governments, institutions, schools, and international organizations. Applicants apply to the international student dispatching department or the education office of the Chinese embassy (consulate) in the host country. The application time is usually from January to early April each year. The deadline for applications varies from country to country, please check in advance. For the application time, specific method, organization code, etc., please consult the international student dispatch department or the education office of the Chinese embassy (consulate) in your country. Those who need our school to issue a pre-admission notice, please complete the bachelor admission application procedure of Nanjing University of the Arts (you still need to select the "self-financed" option when applying on the Nanjing University of the Arts website). Our school will decide whether to issue it after a comprehensive assessment. b. Independent recruitment program Nanjing University of the Arts has several independent recruitment spot from the Chinese Government Scholarship. For applying, please complete the application on the Chinese Government Scholarship website before April 15, 2021, and complete the

9 bachelor admission application procedures for Nanjing University of the Arts (you still need to select the "self-financed" option when applying on the Nanjing University of the Arts website). After completing the online application, please download, print and sign the last page of the Chinese Government Scholarship Application Form, and E-mail it to [email protected] together with other application materials before April 15, 2021. 2. Jiangsu Provincial Government Scholarship It is for students in second-year bachelor or higher. The subsidy is 18,000 RMB per person for bachelor students, 30,000 RMB per person for master students, and 30,000 RMB per person for PhD students. The funding period is 1 year. In-school students apply based on their academic grades, awards and practical activities of the previous year, and the best applicants will be selected and recommend by the school; this scholarship can be applied every year. 3. Nanjing Municipal Government Scholarship It is for international students who are studying for bachelor, master, PhD degree, or advanced studying students (more than one year), subsidizing 10,000 RMB/person for bachelor students, 20,000 RMB/person for master students, and 20,000 RMB/person for PhD students, and 5,000 RMB/person for advanced studying students. The funding period is 1 year. After being admitted, the freshmen can apply directly to the School of International Education office; this scholarship can be applied for every year. Our school will adhere to the principles of standardization, objectivity, and fairness, select scholarship candidates from the admitted students, and submit them for approval to the school and the advanced authorities for the scholarship. The recipients of various scholarships are required to participate in the annual review in accordance based on the relevant scholarship management regulations. Those who

10 pass the review can continue to apply or obtain the scholarship for the next academic year. Those who fail the review will be disqualified from applying, suspend or cancel the scholarship.

IX. Handling of Violations The applicant shall be responsible for the authenticity of the materials filled in or submitted. After the freshmen enter the school, our school will conduct a freshman admission qualification check. Those who disqualify the admission requirements or falsify, their admission qualifications will be cancelled in accordance with the relevant regulations and procedures of advanced education authority and the school.
