Ryan Witherspoon, Better Known As the Mononym Ryan, Has a Strong Pedigree in the Music Industry from the Studio to the Streets
Ryan. Ryan Witherspoon, better known as the mononym Ryan, has a strong pedigree in the music industry from the studio to the streets. As he readies his debut EP Games We Play, the Brooklyn wunderkind is geared to change the game, bringing real artistry back to music. Born in East New York, Ryan spent his childhood in Brooklyn’s gritty Cypress Projects, dodging the streets as best as he could. “I say it was R&B,” he explains, “rough and blessed.” His mother was a singer, almost signed by Quincy Jones, but she opted to attend Brown University and study Medicine instead. She later became a teacher to have more time to focus on raising her son, but still kept the music alive within him. At six years old, his mom even took him to Usher’s 8701 Evolution Tour. “It was the coolest experience ever,” he recalls. “Ever since I was a kid, I would watch music videos in the house, trying to dance like Usher.” The streets called, but Ryan didn’t answer. “My mom put me in sports to keep me off the streets,” he remembers. “But most of my friends were in the streets, so it was hard seeing some of them die out there.” All throughout school, Ryan was a triple threat in sports, playing basketball, baseball and football. ESPN even featured him as one of the top ten athletes in New York City. Music was still always present, as he would listen to his mom’s favorites like Mary J. Blige, Michael Jackson, Jodeci, and Usher, while tempering them with New York City street rap. -

Presents HOW SHE MOVE A film by Ian Iqbal Rashid (92 mins, Canada, 2007) Distribution Publicity Bonne Smith 1028 Queen Street West Star PR Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1H6 Tel: 416-488-4436 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 Fax: 416-488-8438 E-mail: [email protected] E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com High res stills may be downloaded from http://www.mongrelmedia.com/press.html HOW SHE MOVE Synopsis HOW SHE MOVE is an energetic, gritty and ultimately inspiring coming of age tale about a gifted young woman who defies all the rules as she step dances her heart out to achieve her dreams. Featuring a fresh cast of new discoveries, this Sundance Film Festival hit marks the feature film debut of the electric Rutina Wesley, with street-style step sequences by top choreographer Hi-Hat and special appearances by R&B singer-songwriter Keyshia Cole and comedian DeRay Davis. Bursting with raw talent and intelligence, Raya Green (Wesley), the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, has always been the family’s one great hope. She won the rare chance to break out of their drug and crime-infested neighborhood when she was accepted into the exclusive Seaton Academy. But when her sister dies of an overdose, the family is shattered and Raya is forced to return to the place she tried so hard to escape. It’s not easy to go back, especially when one-time friends, including the tough minded Michelle (Tré Armstrong), see Raya as a stuck-up traitor who left the community behind. -

Abstract Jordan III, Augustus W. B.S. Florida A&M University, 1994 A Study of Language and Ideology in Rap Music Advisor: Dr. O. Osinubi Dissertation Dated June 5,1998 This study examined the language of Hip-Hop songs and ideology of the artists as reflected through their songs. The study was based on the theory that Hip-Hop or rap songs are legitimate artforms because of their use of poetic elements such as figuration, figures of sound, symbolism, and ambiguity. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of a few current rap songs for the purpose of investigating their poetical and ideological elements. The researcher found signification battles by some rap artists as the best examples of songs which express the richness and complexity of Hip-Hop music. The researcher found that both Hip-Hop music lyrics and standard poetry have many similarities, but also have a few different features which enhance their uniqueness. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that the main reason many critics do not consider Hip-Hop or rap music an artform, is that they either compare the music to something extremely different, or they simply do not take the time to listen to its songs. Rap Music is an artform that expresses poetic elements and utilizes electronic devices, thus making it a Postmodernist popular artform. Through the research, the researcher showed that rap music lyrics also have intense meaning, just like poetry. 2 A STUDY OF LANGUAGE AND IDEOLOGY IN RAP MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN AFRICAN AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES BY AUGUSTUS JORDAN III SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES ATLANTA,GA JULY 1998 R -111 P-Jfl © 1998 AUGUSTUS W. -
This Week the Beatles Anthology, Coming Soon to a TV Set Near You, Is Unlikely to Unleash a New Wave of Beatlemania
E IN RADIO OCTOBER 2 This Week The Beatles Anthology, coming soon to a TV set near you, is unlikely to unleash a new wave of Beatlemania. But for :hose of us old and lucky enough to have been caught up in that British Invasion of '64, it'll be a nice revisit to those times, espec ally with Capitol's release of the first two of six CDs of Beatles rari- ties. For those who missed out on the Beatles in their prime, this is their best shot at the full story. And for the companies involved in the production- Apple Corps, Inc., ABC-TV, and Capitol/EMI-it's a big -backs bonanza. They are taking no chances, how- ever. As we report inside, the total cost of the market- ing of Anthology will be around $20 million. Our package, put together by our managing editor, Ben Fong -Torres, gives you a head start on all the hype, and includes revisits with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Yoko Ono; with Top 40 at the height of the craziness, and with Dave Rothstein, a Gavin staffer who's not ashamed that, at 40 -something, he's still a Beatlemaniac. In News, Danny Goldberg (top) takes the helm at Mercury Records. Pearl Jam tops a poll of music executives; Entertairment Weekly offers its own power poll, and music loses Blind Melon's Shannon Hoon (mid- dle).
