COVENT r,ARI>E\. 5 rubies, having a cross in the centre, and evidently intended to symbolize the Trinity. The workmanship is pronounced by Mr. Akerman to be doubtless anterior to the 8th century. Three of the coins are blanks, which seems to prove that the whole belonged to a moneyer. Nine are imitations of coins of Licinius, and one of Leo, Emperors of the East, 308 to 324, and 451 to 474, respectively. Five bear the names of French cities, Mettis, Marsallo, Parisius. Thirty- nine are of the seven types described in these pages. The remaining forty-three are of twenty-two different types, and all are in weight and general appearance similar to Merovingian ti-ientes. The average weight is 19*9 grains, and very few individual coins differ much from this. With respect to Abbo, whose name appears on this coin, the Vicomte de Ponton d'Ainecourt, who has paid great attention to the Merovingian series, has shown in the " Annuaire de la Societe Francaise de Numismatique " for 1873, that Abbo was a moneyer at Chalon-sur-Saone, pro- bably under Gontran, King of Burgundy, a.d. -

The Marian Year Jubilee 1954 – 2004 Limerick’s contribution to a celebration of Faith Foreword The earliest apparition of the Blessed Virgin is said to be as early as 40 AD, probably before she died, to James the Apostle in Saragossa, Spain. There have been numerous apparitions since then, but the first in Ireland was on August 21st, 1879, in Knock, County Mayo. Margaret Beirne and thirteen others saw a beautiful woman, clothed in white gar- ments, wearing a large brilliant crown. County Mayo had suffered great distress in the 1870s. Partial famine, poverty and forced evictions had created another wave of Irish emigration. It was in this environment that the apparition occurred. The Church’s response to the apparition was typically circumspect. The Archbishop Most Rev. Dr. John MacHale set up a commission to gather testimonies of those claiming to see the apparition and then a record of purported cures was maintained until 1936. The Commission reported that their evidence was “trustworthy and satisfactory”. The Report was published in the newspapers and pilgrims began to travel from afar. One of the first organised pilgrimages to Knock Shrine came from Limerick. Further reports of cures to Limerick people strengthened the connection with Knock. On June 5th 1880 The Munster News reported the story of a woman from Shanagolden, County Limerick, “who arrived in Kilrush to take the steamer across the Shannon on her way home from Knock. Having lost her sight some years previously she had walked all the way to Knock with her young son and during her stay there, recovered her sight. -

We thank you for your public condemnation of racism, xenophobia, and intolerance against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States and look forward to the administration's efforts to combat profiling within our federal institutions. Spade' Guineas and Their Halves
CATALOGUE OF THE ADVERTISEMENT IMITATIONS OF 'SPADE' GUINEAS AND THEIR HALVES R. N. P. HAWKINS INTRODUCTION COUNTERS for games of cards, &c., in past centuries have been of various designs, of which specific imitation of British coins has been confined chiefly to the shillings and sixpences of Anne and sixpences of Georges I and II (perhaps used to represent guineas and halves) and the guineas and half-guineas of George III. The imitations of these George III coins ignore his last ('military') type; they go as far as the design (known as fourth type on the guineas and third type on the half-guineas) involving a bold reverse feature of a crowned pointed shield called' spade' because of its resemblance to the then prevalent shape of earth-digging spades. Besides contemporary strikings for gaming, manufacture of these imitations of spade guineas and halves has continued intermittently for a further two and a half centuries up to recent decades and possibly it still continues. This is remarkable persistence for such an obsolete design, despite the various liberties that have been taken with the legends, &c. As to uses, there will have been a steady consumption of counters for gambling and non-gambling table-games, and reckoning of stakes in guineas still persists; also, the theatrical stage constantly needs imitation money of bygone times, particularly guineas. A large proportion of the more modern imitations carries advertising matter, not always commercial, that could just as easily have been applied without any trappings of George III coinage designs; indeed some advertisers employed both the spade guinea type and some quite different style of disc; there was a variety of prevalent styles from which to choose. -

PERSEVERE ∵ Musical harmony after Lacan’s Panthéon period Reilly Smethurst Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music (Honours), Master of Music Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 17 December 2016 SYNOPSIS Composition, music-mathematical theory and the surnames of major European figures are not often deemed important in the so-called post-historical, post-modern or post-patriarchal era. In spite of this, I persevere with two things: a slow-paced, philological study of the doctrine of Jacques Lacan and the composition of non-octave music. As a young man, Lacan received a Catholic education that was hostile to Enlightenment philosophies. As an elderly man, Lacan declared himself an anti-philosopher and a non-progressive. He never let go of the Trinity or philological notions of the Letter qua mystery material or severe threat to common understanding. Unlike the tragedian Sigmund Freud, Lacan considered his work comic-pathetic, hence the incessant parade of insults and mockery. This is frequently overlooked by Anglophone academics. To correct this, I place an emphasis on the comic-pathetic Father figures that Lacan composed at the Panthéon from 1972 to 1980. Of secondary interest are Lacan’s four discourse- schemas from 1969 and his schema of capitalism from 1972. Figures and discourses are not the same. Lacan’s Father figures – his notorious knots and links – pilfered material from mathematics, but their form was poetic-sophistic. I treat Lacan’s Father figures as variants of Greek Muses, akin to musical compositions. Lacan’s discourse-schemas, by contrast, are gifts for musicology. -
