2 RE F R A C T O R TE L E S C O P E S Refractor telescopes (also known as dioptrics) are probably what most of us think of when we hear the word “telescope.” Refractors have a long, thin tube in which light passes in a straight line from the front objective lens directly to the eyepiece, at the opposite end of the tube. Refractor telescopes have many advantages, including: • Simplicity of design, which translates into reliability and ease of use. • Little or no maintenance re q u i re m e n t s . • Excellent lunar, planetary and binary star v i e w i n g . • High contrast images with no secondary mir- ror or diagonal obstru c t i o n . • Sealed optical tube, to protect the optics and reduce air currents, which tend to degrade image quality. • P e rmanently mounted and aligned objective lens. The 60mm (2.4") refractor is the most popular telescope size for beginning a s t ronomy enthusiasts and for casual gift-giving. This size telescope is perfect for i n t roducing newcomers to astro n o m y, at an aff o rdable price. For astronomical observing, the 60mm refractor allows you to see lunar details, S a t u rn and its rings, Jupiter and its moons, the phases of Venus, larger globular clusters, bright double stars and some bright nebulae. After adding an optional solar filter, you can observe activity on the sun. In addition, a 60mm telescope can be used for terrestrial viewing, bringing the world closer to you and allowing you to observe wildlife, distant views and your enviro n m e n t . The 70mm models serve the beginner to intermediate observer who wants slightly more apert u re than the 60mm models and allows you to see more detail on objects. C e l e s t ro n ’s 80mm and 102mm refractor models are top choices for beginning o b s e rvers who want to start with a more powerful telescope and for interm e d i a t e level astronomers. These instruments perf o rm equally well for viewing within our solar system and for deep-sky observing. Starting with a more powerful tele- scope can be a good option when you’re looking for an instrument to grow with as you explore the hobby of astro n o m y. C e l e s t ron offers two diff e rent options in refractor telescopes: the altazimuth mount and the . The economical altazimuth is the simplest type of mount, offering two motions: altitude (up and down) and azimuth (side- to-side), for an easily achieved full range of motion. Celestron‘s equatorial mod- els use the German equatorial mount with setting circles and slow motion con- t rols on both the right ascension (R.A.) and declination (DEC.) axes. These fea- t u res make it easier to locate and track objects. While observing, you‘ll notice that as the earth rotates on its axis, stationary stars appear to move across the sky. Thus, due to the eart h ’s rotation, the object y o u ‘ re viewing will drift out of view in both axes, over time. A telescope on an equatorial mount can be aimed at a celestial object and guided with the slow motion controls to follow the object across the sky and keep it in the field of view of your telescope.

19 NE W T O N I A N RE F L E C T O R TE L E S C O P E S Newtonian telescopes (also known as catoptrics) usually use a concave para- bolic primary mirror (longer focal ratios may use spherical primaries) to col- lect and focus incoming light onto a flat secondary (diagonal) mirro r. This s e c o n d a ry mirror reflects the image out of an opening at the side of the main tube and into the eyepiece.

Newtonian reflector telescopes offer a number of excellent f e a t u res including: • Freedom from most optical aberrations and delivery of very bright images. • Reasonably compact and portable to focal lengths of 1000mm. • Excellent perf o rmance observing faint deep-sky objects such as nebulae, remote galaxies and star clusters. • Lowest cost per square inch of apert u re due to use of mirrors rather than l e n s e s . • Generally fast focal ratios: f/4 to f/9. The 76mm (3") apert u re of the Firstscope 76 models offer much of the perf o r- mance of the Newtonian reflector design in a compact, highly port a b l e i n s t ru m e n t . The 114mm (4.5") Newtonian equatorial telescope is the most popular size telescope for the more serious beginning or intermediate level astro n o m y enthusiast, and for good reason. The large light gathering power of this 4- 1/2" telescope makes it ideal for deep-sky observation of galaxies, star clusters and nebulae,as well as lunar and planetary observing. This makes for a very useful and versatile instrument that can take an observer from the very first time looking through a telescope’s eyepiece, through years of observing inter- esting subjects near and far in the night sky. C e l e s t ron offers five diff e rent 114mm Newtonian equatorial telescopes, mak- ing it a sure bet that one of them will have just the combination of feature s and perf o rmance you’re looking for.

C e l e s t ron has long been recognized as a leader in Schmidt-Cassegrain tech- n o l o g y. Our line of Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes ranges from the highly p o rtable C5+ all the way up to the powerful CG-14, and includes several cut- ting edge computerized telescopes. Celestro n ’s potent combination of superi- or optics, fine drive systems and well-crafted mechanics puts these telescopes in a class by themselves. Schmidt-Cassegrain, or catadioptric, telescopes use a combination of mirro r s and lenses to fold the optics and form an image. Incoming light enters t h rough a thin aspheric Schmidt correcting lens, then strikes the spherical p r i m a ry mirror and is reflected back up the tube. The light is then interc e p t- ed by a small secondary mirror which reflects the light out an opening in the rear of the instrument, where the image is formed at the eyepiece.

Some of the advantages of the Schmidt-Cassegrain design are : • Excellent optical systems delivering razor sharp images over a wide field. • High perf o rmance in almost all situations; terrestrial viewing and photogra- phy; lunar, planetary and deep-sky observing; astrophotograpy with fast film; CCD imaging. • Best all-around, multifunction telescope design; it combines all the optical advantages of both mirrors and lenses, while canceling their disadvantages. • Focal ratios generally in the range of f/10, which is useful for all types of p h o t o g r a p h y. • A telescope that’s compact, portable, easy to use, durable, virtually mainte- nance free and has a closed tube. • The best near focus capability of any type of telescope design. • Large apert u res at quite reasonable prices. • Many accessories available. Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes are designed to meet many needs and these compact, portable, user-friendly telescopes have a strong following. At Cele- s t ron, we pride ourselves on producing consistently superior optics and earn- ing our customer’s devotion to the Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. Each opti- cal system is individually hand figured and guaranteed to be diffraction lim- ited. Fine corrections are made on the secondary mirrors, that smooths the optical figure. To maintain tight quality control, each Celestron Schmidt- Cassegrain telescope is manufactured in the U.S.A.

30 Hand figuring of an optical system is a complex optical pro c e d u re done only on a commercial basis by Celestron. The art of hand figuring does take time but the results are easily evidenced by the superior resultant astro p h o- tographs and viewing obtained. C e l e s t ro n ’s optical testing is perf o rmed on double-pass auto-collimators in a t e m p e r a t u re controlled environment. This ensures the highest quality on a consistent basis. Our commitment to the most careful optical fabrication and most stringent testing and quality control is for one purpose: to produce the v e ry best Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes available anywhere . All Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes utilize the multicoated Star- bright® coatings group. High Reflectivity (HR) coatings are used on the mir- rors for increased reflectivity and Anti-Reflection (AR) coatings are used on the correcting lens for increased light transmission. In fact, Celestro n ’s Star- bright coatings provide “the best light transmission by a large margin over the competition,” according to Sky & Te l e s c o p e magazine. In addition, the optical systems are optimally baffled to ensure the highest contrast levels. To p rovide consistent customer satisfaction and high perf o rmance, all Celestro n Schmidt-Cassegrain optical assemblies, at each apert u re size, utilize the same superior optics, whether in a basic or full featured model.

32 The optical system of the C5+ f e a t u re s S t a r b r i g h t® coatings. An A s t ronomy m a g- azine review said, “the C5 I tested con- tained superb optics. At high powers, stars exhibited a clearly defined Airy disk surrounded by a bright first diff r a c- tion ring and several successively fainter outer rings. This was a telescope that demonstrated how well Schmidt- Cassegrain optics can perf o rm and met C e l e s t ron‘s promise of diffraction limit- ed optics.” An innovative, rigid single-arm fork mount with carrying handle makes this telescope quite convenient to carry. The spur gear drive has been re e n g i n e e re d and utilizes a rigid polar axle with pre-loaded tapered roller bearings in a s t u rdy and accurate drive system. The DEC. axis uses two pre-loaded ball bearings for smooth, rigid movement. All controls on the mount are precision engineered and manufactured. Sky & Te l e s c o p e magazine said, “the C5 has the smoothest focusing control I have ever used on a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.’’ The DC electronics of the C5+ have a built-in drive contro l l e r, activated with an optional hand control. The R.A. motor‘s main tracking speed is an accu- rately regulated sidereal rate. The hand control allows fast and slow overr i d e of the R.A. tracking speed and operation of the optional DEC. motor. A com- ment from the Sky & Te l e s c o p e review — “the digital electronics delivered a near perfect sidereal tracking rate.” The C5+ is powered by a 9 volt alkaline battery and runs for 50 hours. The C 5+ can be operated in both the Nort h e rn and Southern hemisphere s (optional hand controller re q u i re d ) . This telescope is also an ideal choice for and CCD imaging. You’ll find that the C5+ is truly a multipurpose instrument — an astro n o m i- cal telescope, a spotting scope and a 1250mm f/10 telephoto lens all ro l l e d into one instrument. Because the C5+ can perf o rm so many functions, it has a quick release tube assembly and unique dovetail mounting system with safety locks, to move from one task to another with ease. The six lb. optical tube assembly can be removed from the fork tine, without tools, in just sec- onds. Next, it can be mounted to a rigid photo tripod for terrestrial applica- tions, such as bird watching, nature study, enjoying distant vistas or for use as a 1250mm telephoto lens. Its near focus is just 20 feet, so subjects both near and far can be observed. The C5+ can even be converted to a computer- ized telescope with optional accessories. The standard equatorial wedge supplied with the C5+ has a built-in bubble level and is adjustable from 0° to 90°.
