The Chip Ganassi Racing driver has four wins in seven previous visits to the historic road circuit and will look to put his championship destiny in his own hands with another strong performance on the 3.37-mile circuit. • WELCOME BACK, JACK: Rookie Jack Harvey returns to the Verizon IndyCar Series this weekend with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. The English driver, who finished second in Indy Lights in 2014 and 2015, made his series debut with Andretti Autosport with Michael Shank Racing in May. He makes the first of two road course starts this weekend. • FANTASY FOCUS: Scott Dixon will be the popular pick this weekend among Fantasy owners, but here are a few more to team with the four-time champ. Ryan Hunter-Reay and Will Power have won races at the Glen while Marco Andretti and Tony Kanaan have been strong at the track in the past. If you’re looking for value, Conor Daly and Sebastien Bourdais are affordable and finished in the top-five a year ago. This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.
