Autor: Elusa Santos de Andrade Monografia apresentada à Faculdade de Veterinária como requisito para obtenção do grau de ESPECIALISTA EM ANÁLISES CLÍNICAS VETERINÁRIAS Orientadora: Silvia Gonzalez Monteiro PORTO ALEGRE 2007 RESUMO A presente monografia foi elaborada a partir de uma revisão bibliográfica sobre as infecções causadas por hematozoários em cães e gatos de ocorrência no Brasil. Através desta, buscou-se aprofundar e discutir diversos aspectos comuns e particulares dessas infecções e seus agentes, abordando morfologia, histórico, prevenção e salientando aspectos semelhantes e particularidades, tais como: epidemiologia, vetores, ciclo, patogenia, métodos de diagnóstico, tratamento e controle. São revisados os parasitos dos gêneros Babesia, Cytauxzoon, Rangelia, Hepatozoon e Trypanosoma enfatizando as espécies Babesia canis vogeli, Cytauxzoon felis, Rangelia vitalli, Hepatozoon canis, Trypanosoma cruzi e Trypanosoma evansi. Concluiu-se que para um correto diagnóstico, tratamento e prevenção das infecções por hematozoários em cães e gatos são necessários alguns requisitos, os quais sejam: conhecimento atualizado do clínico, anamnese e exame clínico minuciosos, preparo adequado e conhecimento atualizado do analista clínico veterinário, controle dos vetores, conscientização das autoridades e da população. However, few studies on the biochemical changes in dogs infected with this protozoon exist. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the biochemical changes in dogs experimentally infected with R. vitalii, during the acute phase of the infection. For this study, 12 female dogs (aged 6-12 months and weighing between 4 and 7 kg) were used, divided in two groups. Group A was composed of healthy dogs (n = 5); and group B consisted of infected animals (n = 7). -

The most common clinical signs are apathy, hyperthermia and spontaneous bleeding. Anemia and thrombocytopenia are the most common hematological findings. This work reports a clinical case of canine Rangeliosis treated at a private veterinary hospital, in São Paulo city in 2017. A dog was treated at a veterinary hospital in the north of São Paulo, with progressive weight loss, apathy and tail injury. Anemia and thrombocytopenia were observed on the hemogram. Rangelia vitalii DNA was detected in animal blood by real-time PCR (qPCR). In addition to the supportive treatment, doxycycline and subcutaneous imidocarb applications were used. The sample collected after treatment with the antibiotic continued to present protozoal DNA. The disease should be considered as a differential diagnosis and there is a great need for further studies about the therapy used. -

Eastern Equine Encephalitis Case Definition
CASE DEFINITION FOR EASTERN EQUINE ENCEPHALITIS 1. General disease/pathogen information: Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) is a mosquito-borne viral disease that primarily affects horses. EEE, also known as sleeping sickness, is characterized by central nervous system dysfunction and a moderate to high case fatality rate. The causal virus is maintained in nature in an alternating infection cycle between mosquitoes and birds. Humans and horses serve as dead-end hosts. Although horses and humans are most often affected by the virus, birds may exhibit clinical signs, and infection and disease occasionally occurs in other livestock, deer, dogs, and a variety of mammalian, reptile, and amphibian species. 1.1. Etiologic agent: EEE is caused by the Eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus (EEEV), an Alphavirus of the family Togaviridae. It is closely related to the Western and Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis viruses and Highlands J virus, all of which cause similar neurological dysfunction disorders in horses. There are two distinct antigenic variants of EEEV. The North American variant is more pathogenic than the South and Central American variant. 1.2. Distribution/frequency of agent or pathogen in U.S.: EEEV is distributed throughout the Western Hemisphere. It has also been reported in the Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Central America, and South America. In North America, it is found in eastern Canada and all States in the United States east of the Mississippi River as well as Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas. EEEV is endemic in the Gulf of Mexico region of the United States. 1.3. Clinical signs: Horses infected with EEEV will initially develop fever, lethargy, and anorexia.
