Bibliography of Works on Timor Leste (East Timor) Held in the National Library of Australia Bibliography of works on Timor Leste (East Timor) held in the National Library of Australia Compiled by Anya Dettman and Linda Newbown Scene from television series Istoria ba futuru (copyright Casa de Produc ão̧ Audiovisual, 2004- ). DVDs of selected episodes held in Asian Collections, National Library of Australia. June 2009 Preface The National Library of Australia holds a significant collection of material about East Timor, dating from the periods of Portuguese colonisation, Indonesian occupation and post-independence. This bibliography is an attempt to list all the National Library’s holdings on East Timor, including monographs, newspapers and non-book material (including maps, pictures, and ephemera), up to and including January 2009, with an appendix for works acquired during an acquisitions trip in May 2009. The material was extracted from the catalogue using keyword searches such as “Timor” in title, subject and place of publication. Unfortunately, we have not been able to include citations for journal articles at this stage. Some titles which referred to the whole island of Timor have been retained on this list as they may still be of relevance to some researchers. The material is arranged alphabetically by author, or by title where there is no main author. Hopefully future editions of this bibliography will be subdivided by subject to make research easier. It has not been possible to physically check every item listed, so there may well be some records included which despite their title have little relevance to East Timorese research. The authors request that readers of the bibliography bring them to their attention so that they can be removed from future editions. Works on East Timor are not housed separately, or within Asian Collections, but are integrated within the National Library’s overseas collections by format – i.e. East Timorese newspapers are held with the other overseas newspapers. Most items, with the exception of serials and newspapers, may be requested through interlibrary loan. The East Timor collection is a growing one, and it is intended to update this list regularly. The authors welcome feedback, including notification of errors and suggestions for improvements to the bibliography or additions to the collection. Updated versions of this bibliography will also be available online in the Guides section of the Asian Collections website at: http://www.nla.gov.au/asian/ For further information please contact: Anya Dettman Southeast Asia Specialist and East Timor Librarian Overseas Collections Development National Library of Australia Canberra ACT 2600 Tel (02) 6262 1248 Fax (02) 6262 4327 Email: [email protected] Internet: http://www.nla.gov.au/asian 2 Works on East Timor in the National Library of Australia 20 tahun Timor Timur membangun = 20 years of development in East Timor. • Thank God Such Men Lived
Thank God Such Men Lived BY KEN WRIGHT ‘For I am writing not history, and the truth is that the most brilliant exploits often tell us nothing of the virtues of the men who performed them, while on the other hand, a chance remark or a joke may reveal far more of a mans character than the mere feat of winning battles in which thousands fall or of the marshalling of great armies or laying siege to cities’ - Greek philosopher Plutarch, about 110 AD The Coastwatchers Memorial Lighthouse was erected by public subscription and by money from the Commonwealth of Australia in 1959 at Kalibobo Point in Madang, Papua New Guinea. Shaped like a rocket or a bomb, the 80-feet high reinforced concrete column has an attractive base surround and a cruciform pathway approach. This memorial lighthouse was also designed to be a practical navigational aid with provision for the installation of a powerful one million candlepower beam that would be visible up to ten miles out to sea. Part of the inscription on the dedication plate reads: ‘In honour and grateful memory of the Coastwatchers and of the loyal natives who assisted them in their heroic service behind enemy lines during the Second World War in providing intelligence vital to the conduct of Allied operations. Not only did the Coastwatchers transmit by means of teleradio from their jungle hideouts information which led to the sinking of numerous enemy warships but they were able to give timely warning of impending enemy air attacks. The contribution towards the Allied victory in the Pacific by a small body of men who constituted the Coastwatchers was out of all proportion to their numbers’.

It looks at the co-operation between Special Operations Australia, Special Operations Executive of Britain and the US Officeof Strategic Services and their actions with and against each other during the Pacific War. Based on hithertounused archival sources, it argues that the cancellation of 'Kingfisher' - and the failure to rescue the Sandakan prisoners - can be explained by the motivations, decisions and actions of particular British officers in the interplay of the wartime alliance. The politics of wartime alliances played out at both the level of grand strategy but also in interaction between officers within the planning headquarters in the Southwest Pacific Area, with severe implications for those most directly affected. II das Engenharias, 6201-001 Covilhã, Portugal Abstract Regeneration of informal settlements is a topic being studied worldwide. Generally, cities comprise informal settlements, and consequently sustainability problems, requiring urgent actions. Often, the solutions regarding informal settlements do not adequately consider the local features, leading to difficulties such as environmental and public health deteriorations, weakening of housing access or troubles related to economic sustainability. Additionally, some housing programs don’t fit in community characteristics of social inequalities and poverty. In this sense, this paper intends Corresponding Author: to show the results of the development of a research methodology, to carry out Ana Santos strategies and to pursuit strategies of rethinking informal housing settlements, in an [email protected] integrated and resilient way. It concludes with the application of a theoretical model Received: 7 January 2020 to an informal neighbourhood in Pante Macassar, a city in the Oé-Cusse region of Accepted: 21 April 2020 East Timor. The interest in this approach results from an ongoing Doctorate program Published: 3 May 2020 in Civil Engineering at the University of Beira Interior, focused on the development of a set of good practice guidelines for the informal city regeneration.

  • Report (1997), Only Five African Countries Have a Lower GDP Per Capita Than East Timor’S Post- Crisis $US168 Per Capita
CHAPTER 2 ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT The East Timor economy1 2.1 The Indonesian withdrawal from East Timor in September 1999, accompanied by a campaign of violence, killings, massive looting and destruction of property and infrastructure, forced transportation of large numbers of people to West Timor and the flight of most of the rest of the population from their homes, left the East Timor economy in ruin. This section, therefore, largely describes the economy as it was prior to the Indonesian withdrawal, the remains of which must serve as the foundations for the economy of an independent East Timor. 2.2 DFAT submitted that East Timor has always been principally a subsistence economy. Much economic activity occurred through barter, which was not captured in GDP figures. Economic statistics for East Timor were scarce and unreliable, as was detailed information about economic activity. DFAT stated that: Preliminary figures from the Indonesian Government Bureau of Statistics (BPS) indicate that East Timor’s 1998 GDP was Rp1405 billion ($US148 million) using an average annual exchange rate of for 1998 of Rp9514/$US. GDP per capita was approximately $US168 in 1998. Largely reflecting conditions before the Indonesian economic crisis, East Timor’s GDP (at current market prices) in 1997 was Rp996 billion ($US343 million). East Timor’s GDP accounts for a tiny 0.15% of Indonesia’s national GDP. According to the BPS, per capita GDP was Rp1.1 million ($US379) compared with a national GDP per capita of Rp3.1 million ($US1,068). According to the World Bank’s World Development Report (1997), only five African countries have a lower GDP per capita than East Timor’s post- crisis $US168 per capita.
