31. Vienna City Marathon 13. April 2014 run vienna – enjoy classics Vienna, 11th March 2014 Caroline Chepkwony and Mai Ito favourites, but Anna Hahner hopes to waltz in Vienna Exciting line-up for the women’s elite marathon race at the Vienna City Marathon “Everybody waltz” – this is the motto of the 31st edition of the Vienna City Marathon on 13th April. But who will waltz first? “If my race goes well I will waltz after crossing the finish line,” says Anna Hahner. If the German is in good form she might be able to compete for a place on the podium in Vienna. However the favourites come from elsewhere: Kenya’s Caroline Chepkwony will be challenged by Mai Ito, who hopes to become the second Japanese athlete to take Austria’s biggest sporting event. Adding other running events staged parallel to the Vienna City Marathon on 13th April race organisers registered more than 40,000 entries. There are no bib numbers left for this IAAF Gold Label Road Race. Caroline Chepkwony comes with good omen Organisers released names for the women’s elite race today. Although Caroline Chepkwony looks to have a good chance to become the Vienna City Marathon champion a Kenyan win should not be taken for granted. The long history of the race shows there were only four Kenyan women who managed to finish first on Vienna’s impressive Heldenplatz. One of these wins came last year, and there is a parallel which might be a good omen for Chepkwony. In 2013 Flomena Cheyech improved her personal best by almost ten minutes when she ran 2:24:34. Before that Cheyech won the Rome Ostia half marathon with a personal best of 67:39. Chepkwony chose the same race schedule this year and was equally successful, taking the Italian half marathon in 68:48 on 2nd March. She beat fellow-Kenyan Sharon Cherop, the 2012 Boston Marathon champion, by three seconds. Mai Ito of Japan is the fastest in the field It will be the third marathon for 29 year-old Caroline Chepkwony. After running her debut in Berlin with 2:30:34 in 2012 she won the Ljubljana race in October 2013, improving to 2:27:27. Japan’s Mai Ito has far more experience in marathon running and features a personal best of 2:25:26. She ran this time in 2012 when she finished fifth in Nagoya. Ito has been very consistent and achieved plenty of sub 2:30 times in recent years, but so far she has not managed to win a big marathon. The 29 year-old will hope to finally achieve this in Vienna, where there has been one Japanese victory so far: Tomo Morimoto won the race in 2006 with 2:24:33. However there might be a handicap to the Japanese, because she will run only seven weeks after finishing seventh in Tokyo with 2:28:36. Anna Hahner hopes to run well under 2:30 Russia’s Olga Glok, who ran her PB of 2:27:12 when finishing second in Vienna two years ago, and Alice Chelangat (Kenya/2:29:47) are also expected to challenge for podium places. Anna Hahner will be paced by her twin sister Lisa and hopes to run well under 2:30 for the second time in her career. The 24 year- old significantly improved in Frankfurt last year, when she clocked 2:27:55. “In my preparations for Vienna I have trained in Spain and Kenya recently,” said Anna Hahner, who together with her sister is coached by Italian Renato Canova since spring last year. 31. It’s got a great swing to it: Everyone goes waltzing at the Vienna City Marathon! Vienna is the city of the Waltz and a Music capital. The dance in ¾ time is the perfect expression of a feeling for life: classic, dynamic and celebrating life itself. The marathon shares this rhythm. In the past the Vienna City Marathon has begun to the strains of “The Blue Danube”, a perfect match for the motto “Run Vienna – Enjoy Classics.” In 2014 the Vienna Waltz will be at the heart of the VCM, reflecting the spinning and floating dance movement for which Vienna is famous. When the Waltz was created over 200 years ago, it was initially looked down upon by “High Society” because it brought couples into physical contact. Johann Strauss was the man who, above all, made the Waltz known worldwide with his tunes. It would be unthinkable to have the Opera Ball or the New Year Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic without the strains of the Waltzes written by the Strauss family. Let yourself be surprised by the music of the Waltz and its dance! There’s no better place to enjoy it than at the Vienna City Marathon because the Danube is the river celebrated more than any other and the Vienna Waltz is one of the radiant symbols of the city.     Tigist Girma Seeking Three IAAF Gold Label Victories in A Row, by Paul Gains Tigist Girma’s best marathon time may not have caught up with her impressive competitive rec- ord but the Ethiopian is quickly establishing herself as a world-class athlete to be feared. When she lines up for the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon October 20th, however, it will be a reality check of epic proportions. Among the athletes she will face at this IAAF Gold Label race are her countrywomen Bruktayit Degefa and Belaynesh Oljira who have run much, much faster times. Oljira, for instance, has a best of 2:21:53 almost five full minutes faster than Girma’s PB of 2:26:34 which she set in win- ning the Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon in May. However, the 26-year-old Girma remains un- daunted. “Whenever I train for a specific competition, I have the goal to win as well as to run as fast as my training partners like Roza Dereje and Ruti Aga,” she says when asked what her target might be for Toronto, another Gold Label race. “So, I will try to run fast and win the race as well.” Her resolve to match times recorded by members of her training group is decidedly ambitious. Dereje has a best of 2:19:17 while Ruti Aga has run 2:18:34. But it is the way Girma wins that is compelling. In each of her victories she has gone to the front with more than 12-15km remaining and simply run away from athletes, many of whom have superior personal bests.

    April 15, 2019 Dear Members of the Media, On behalf of the Boston Athletic Association, principal sponsor John Hancock, and all of our sponsors and supporters, we welcome you to the City of Boston and the 123rd running of the Boston Marathon. As the oldest annually contested marathon in the world, the Boston Marathon represents more than a 26.2-mile footrace. The roads from Hopkinton to Boston have served as a beacon for well over a century, bringing those from all backgrounds together to celebrate the pursuit of athletic excellence. From our early beginnings in 1897 through this year’s 123rd running, the Boston Marathon has been an annual tradition that is on full display every April near and far. We hope that all will be able to savor the spirit of the Boston Marathon, regardless whether you are an athlete or volunteer, spectator or member of the media. Race week will surely not disappoint. The race towards Boylston Street will continue to showcase some of the world’s best athletes. Fronting the charge on Marathon Monday will be a quartet of defending champions who persevered through some of the harshest weather conditions in race history twelve months ago. Desiree Linden, the determined and resilient American who snapped a 33-year USA winless streak in the women’s open division, returns with hopes of keeping her crown. Linden has said that last year’s race was the culmination of more than a decade of trying to tame the beast of Boston – a race course that rewards those who are both patient and daring.

World record holder Dennis Kimetto will run his next marathon in Vienna on 22nd April. Organisers announced the participation of the Kenyan star runner during a press conference in the Austrian capital today. It will be the first time in the history of the Vienna City Marathon, which began back in 1984, that a marathon world record holder is among the elite runners. 34 year-old Dennis Kimetto, who ran 2:02:57 in Berlin 2014, hopes to rekindle his career in Vienna next month. World-class in Vienna: an extraordinary leading actor „We need to present top world-class athletes to get a stronger international attentional for the Vienna City Marathon. While our motto is ,35 years of theatre of emotions’ we now have a sort of leading actor for this: an athlete who has extraordinary capabilities and who will be in the focus. Participants, fans and spectators can look forward to a thrilling race“, said Race Director Wolfgang Konrad. The Vienna City Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. Entries for the 35th edition of the race are still accepted online at: www.vienna- marathon.com Britain’s Paula Radcliffe and Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie have already run in Austria’s biggest sporting event. However they competed in the half marathon which is staged parallel to the marathon race.
