Vienna City Marathon Presse-Info 32nd Vienna City Marathon 12 April 2015 run vienna – enjoy classics Vienna City Marathon 2015 Information about Austria’s biggest sports event at a glance The Vienna City Marathon 2015 runs with the Motto of “We are Europe”. Running as an expression of peaceful co-existence and personal freedom, independent of nation, religion and skin colour: the Vienna City Marathon puts this experience at the forefront with its new theme for the year. The event on April 12, 2015 and the build-up to the big day will have this theme as its guiding light. Run Vienna – Enjoy Classics The Vienna City Marathon (VCM) brings together the classic tourist images of Vienna combined with modern lifestyle. This unique combination of a musical world tradition, cultural heritage and contemporary running event makes the VCM unique. The fast and scenic course leads to Vienna's most impressive modern and historic points of interest such as the Opera House and Schönbrunn Castle with an impressive finish at ‚Heldenplatz‘ in the very centre of the city. Runners discover their rhythm in tune with the melodies of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the waltz king Johann Strauß with more than ten kilometres of the course resounding to music. The programme of events offers runners of every ability the chance to experience Vienna in their running. A marathon, a half marathon and a relay marathon are stages simultaneously. Kids races take centre stage already on Saturday and provide an emotional highlight of the event. Exciting running performances Some of the fastest runners in the world have won here, including running legend Haile Gebrselassie, marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe and double world champion Abel Kirui. In 2014 Ethiopian Getu Feleke set a course record of 2:05:41 which remains the seventh fastest marathon winning time that year. The Vienna City Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. Side Events in the race week A number of side events make the running weekend a special occasion. Highlight is the "International Friendship Party" on Saturday before the race. The exquisite neo-gothic banqueting suite of Vienna's Town Hall provides an inspiring atmosphere where people enjoy delicious Italian pasta and fantastic "Kaiserschmarrn", a traditional Viennese pancake. The VCM-Expo “Vienna Sports World” attracts the visitors as an entertaining come-together of the newest trends in sports and running. World record holder Dennis Kimetto will run his next marathon in Vienna on 22nd April. Organisers announced the participation of the Kenyan star runner during a press conference in the Austrian capital today. It will be the first time in the history of the Vienna City Marathon, which began back in 1984, that a marathon world record holder is among the elite runners. 34 year-old Dennis Kimetto, who ran 2:02:57 in Berlin 2014, hopes to rekindle his career in Vienna next month. World-class in Vienna: an extraordinary leading actor „We need to present top world-class athletes to get a stronger international attentional for the Vienna City Marathon. While our motto is ,35 years of theatre of emotions’ we now have a sort of leading actor for this: an athlete who has extraordinary capabilities and who will be in the focus. Participants, fans and spectators can look forward to a thrilling race“, said Race Director Wolfgang Konrad. The Vienna City Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. Tokyo winner Higuchi, Turin winner Chemtai, strong Swiss Neuenschwander and two-time Vienna Champion Fate Tola join the elite field. Caroline Chepkwony hopes to take revenge when she returns to the Vienna City Marathon to compete against defending champion Anna Hahner. The Kenyan was sensationally beaten by Germany’s rising marathon star a year ago when she faded badly in the final stages. Organisers hope for a similarly thrilling women’s contest on 12th April. A total of seven women with personal bests between 2:25 and 2:30 are on the start list. Defending champion Getu Feleke is the favourite in the men’s race. The Vienna City Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. Dramatic finish for Chepkwony in 2014 Last April Caroline Chepkwony looked certain to take a second marathon victory in a row. The 2013 Lubljana champion, who clocked her personal best of 2:27:27 in that race, was almost two and a half minutes ahead at the 35 k point. However the picture changed dramatically in the final few miles. The Kenyan suffered of stomach problems and could barely jog. With 300 metres to go Anna Hahner passed her and stormed to a totally unexpected victory in this Gold Label Road Race. The German clocked 2:28:59 with Chepkwony 19 seconds behind in second place.

    PRESS RELEASE Vienna, 20th February 2008 Vienna City Marathon Celebrates its 25th Edition Already 9,000 entries for jubilee race on 27th April This year’s Vienna City Marathon will mark a special occasion: When the race will be started on 27th April a couple of hundred thousands of spectators will witness a jubilee event in the capital. It will be the 25th edition of Austria’s biggest and most prestigious road race. This is one reason why entry figures are soaring. So far about 9,000 runners have registered for the race, which includes a half marathon, a relay event plus three races for juniors and children. Another reason for the growing popularity of the Vienna City Marathon is that the event has established itself as a major international marathon. The elite fields in recent years were much stronger than before. Additionally the race can offer a unique combination of sports and culture: ,Run Vienna – Enjoy Classic’ is the motto of the Vienna City Marathon. 794 finishers in 1984 When the first edition of the race was started on 25th March 1984 organisers were proud to register 794 finishers at the Heldenplatz, which is still the site of the spectacular finish today. “We will see times in the future when we will have ten times as many participants,” said Helmut Zilk after he had started the first race 24 years ago. At that time the words of the Austrian minister for education and art may have sounded a bit exaggerated. But the development of the Vienna City Marathon proved that the minister was right.

April 2012 run vienna – enjoy classics PRESSE-RELEASE VIENNA CITY MARATHON March 21, 2012 Vienna City Marathon set to become a true champions’ race Defending champions John Kiprotich and Fate Tola plus four more former winners to run in Vienna on April, 15. The course record will be the goal in the men’s race of the Vienna City Marathon on 15th April. Organisers of Austria’s biggest sporting event, who had recently signed superstars Haile Gebrselassie and Paula Radcliffe for a unique chase race in the half marathon, have now announced a first set of names for their main event, the Vienna City Marathon. Both the defending champions, John Kiprotich (Kenya) and Fate Tola (Ethiopia), will be returning to the Austrian capital as will four more former champions of the race. The Vienna City Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label Race. Surprise winner Kiprotich in good shape While the half marathon with Haile and Paula carries the title ,OMV Champions Race’ the competition over the full distance will turn out to be a true champions’ race as well. Defending champion John Kiprotich will not be the fastest in the field on 15th April, but the 23 year-old is determined to add another Vienna victory. In 2011 he had caused a major surprise by beating the experienced Patrick Ivuti (Kenya) and improving his personal best by more than seven minutes! Clocking 2:08:29 last year he is less than a minute away from the course record of 2:07:38, which was established by the current World Champion Abel Kirui in 2008.
