April 2018 run vienna – enjoy classics Vienna, 20 March 2018 World record holder Dennis Kimetto to run in Vienna Marathon star with stellar best of 2:02:57 hopes to give his career a new boost on 22nd April. World record holder Dennis Kimetto will run his next marathon in Vienna on 22nd April. Organisers announced the participation of the Kenyan star runner during a press conference in the Austrian capital today. It will be the first time in the history of the Vienna City Marathon, which began back in 1984, that a marathon world record holder is among the elite runners. 34 year-old Dennis Kimetto, who ran 2:02:57 in Berlin 2014, hopes to rekindle his career in Vienna next month. World-class in Vienna: an extraordinary leading actor „We need to present top world-class athletes to get a stronger international attentional for the Vienna City Marathon. While our motto is ,35 years of theatre of emotions’ we now have a sort of leading actor for this: an athlete who has extraordinary capabilities and who will be in the focus. Participants, fans and spectators can look forward to a thrilling race“, said Race Director Wolfgang Konrad. The Vienna City Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. Entries for the 35th edition of the race are still accepted online at: www.vienna- marathon.com Britain’s Paula Radcliffe and Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie have already run in Austria’s biggest sporting event. However they competed in the half marathon which is staged parallel to the marathon race. Dennis Kimetto will be the first world record holder to run the classic distance in Vienna. Kimetto is up for “a strong performance” “I was able to train without injuries for a good period. I believe in my capabilities and want to show a strong performance in Vienna. If conditions are good then I want to attack the course record. The most important thing is that after several disappointing races in the last two years I can achieve a good marathon result again,“ said Dennis Kimetto, who took the road running scene by storm with three major wins in the spring of 2012. He first won the star-studded Ras Al Khaimah half marathon in the United Arab Emirates, then took the Berlin Half Marathon with 59:14 - a time that remains his personal best - and finally broke the world record in Berlin’s 25 k race. His superb time of 1:11:18 still stands as the global 35. Vienna City Marathon, 21./22. April 2018 run vienna – enjoy classics record today as does his marathon world record. After a second place debut in Berlin with 2:04:16 in 2012 - the fastest debut marathon on a record eligible course at that time - Kimetto took the Tokyo and the Chicago Marathon a year later. Since September 2014 he holds the marathon world record with 2:02:57. Marathon super stars Eliud Kipchoge, Wilson Kipsang and Kenenisa Bekele all failed to break Kimetto’s mark in the past three years. But the world record holder struggled during this period and could not reproduce his dominant form from the years before. Since spring 2015 Kimetto only finished two marathons. His most notable result was a third place in London in 2015 with 2:05:50. A year later he was ninth in London with 2:11:44. “Dennis wants to show something in Vienna” “Dennis wants to show something in Vienna. I hope that the final part of his preparations will also go well. He is an athlete of extraordinary quality. After he ran his world record in Berlin physical problems started. Tokyo winner Higuchi, Turin winner Chemtai, strong Swiss Neuenschwander and two-time Vienna Champion Fate Tola join the elite field. Caroline Chepkwony hopes to take revenge when she returns to the Vienna City Marathon to compete against defending champion Anna Hahner. The Kenyan was sensationally beaten by Germany’s rising marathon star a year ago when she faded badly in the final stages. Organisers hope for a similarly thrilling women’s contest on 12th April. A total of seven women with personal bests between 2:25 and 2:30 are on the start list. Defending champion Getu Feleke is the favourite in the men’s race. The Vienna City Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. Dramatic finish for Chepkwony in 2014 Last April Caroline Chepkwony looked certain to take a second marathon victory in a row. The 2013 Lubljana champion, who clocked her personal best of 2:27:27 in that race, was almost two and a half minutes ahead at the 35 k point. However the picture changed dramatically in the final few miles. The Kenyan suffered of stomach problems and could barely jog. With 300 metres to go Anna Hahner passed her and stormed to a totally unexpected victory in this Gold Label Road Race. The German clocked 2:28:59 with Chepkwony 19 seconds behind in second place.

It will be the 25th edition of Austria’s biggest and most prestigious road race. This is one reason why entry figures are soaring. Another reason for the growing popularity of the Vienna City Marathon is that the event has established itself as a major international marathon. The elite fields in recent years were much stronger than before. At that time the words of the Austrian minister for education and art may have sounded a bit exaggerated. But the development of the Vienna City Marathon proved that the minister was right.

Clocking 2:08:29 last year he is less than a minute away from the course record of 2:07:38, which was established by the current World Champion Abel Kirui in 2008.

Italian women have played significant roles in the history of the Vienna City Marathon, which will celebrate its 30th edition on 14th April. They have won the race three times and the course record still belongs to Maura Viceconte, who had run 2:23:47 back in 2000. So it is no surprise that there is an Italian name on the list of the elite women, which were announced today by the organisers. Rosaria Console is one of four athletes with personal bests of sub 2:27. The 33 year-old returns to the scene where she triumphed nine years ago. Console will hope to add another successful Italian chapter to the history of Austria’s most prestigious road race. But she will meet tough opposition in Vienna. Ethiopian superstar wins OMV half marathon in 61:14 minutes. Sugut in 2:08:19 and Cheyech in 2:24:34 victorious in marathon race. Defending champion Henry Sugut produced a result at the Vienna City Marathon that fitted to the occasion. It was the 30th edition of Austria’s biggest sporting event and the 27 year-old Kenyan added a piece of history to the event by becoming only the second athlete to win for a third time. Back in the 80ies it was Austria’s Gerhard Hartmann who triumphed even three times in a row, from 1985 to ’87. But of course the quality of the fields in those times cannot be compared with today’s standards. Hartmann’s best time in Vienna was 2:12:22 while Sugut needed to run around four minutes faster today. He clocked 2:08:19 in fine but warm weather conditions. In a race dominated by Kenyans Solomon Kiptoo was second with 2:08:34 while Geoffrey Ndungu took third in 2:08:42. In the women’s race Flomena Cheyech improved by almost ten minutes in Vienna. The 30 year-old Kenyan won with 2:24:34 and produced one of the biggest winning margins in the race’s history. She was streets ahead of Ethiopians Assefa Meskerem (2:31:18) and Eyerusalem Kuma (2:32:24).
