We looked at both the internal influence of publications on the field of ecological economics and the external influence of those same publications on the broader academic community. We used four lists of papers and books for the analysis: (1) 92 papers nominated by the Ecological Economics (EE) Editorial Board; (2) 71 papers that were published in EE and that received 15 or more citations in all journals included in the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Citation Index; (3) 57 papers that had been cited in EE 15 or more times; and (4) 77 monographs and edited books that had been cited in EE 15 or more times. In all, we analyzed 251 unique publications. For each publication, we counted the total number of ISI citations as well as the total number of citations in EE. We calculated the average number of citations per year to each paper since its publication in both the ISI database and in EE, along with the percentage of the total ISI citations that were in EE. -

Herman Daly About the book When I worked at the World Bank, I often heard the statement, “There is no conflict between economics and ecology. We can and must grow the economy and protect the environment at the same time.” I still hear that a lot today. Is it true? Is it possible? Although it is a comforting idea, I fear that it is at most half true. The “true” part comes from a confusion of reallocation with aggregate growth. There are generally always possibilities of better allocation – more of something desired in exchange for a reduction in something less desired. This is the domain of microeconomics. Aggregate growth, by contrast, means more of everything as measured by GDP – it is the domain of macroeconomics, and is the meaning of growth in this discussion. The economy is an open subsystem of the larger ecosphere that is finite, non- growing, and materially closed, although open to a continual, but non-growing, throughput of solar energy. When the economy grows in physical dimensions it incorporates matter and energy from the rest of the ecosystem into itself. -

Issues are raised over the validity of the approach as a method of assessing the underlying preferences of individuals. C.L. Spash INTRODUCTION The contingent valuation method (CVM) is a controversial approach by which economists have attempted to place a value upon environmental changes. The basic method involves a questionnaire which asks a respondent their willingness to pay (WTP) for an environmental improvement or their willingness to accept (WTA) compensation for a loss or degradation of environmental assets or quality. The resulting stated preference is most commonly used as a mean value of the change and then aggregated across the relevant population and discounted for time. The original justification was the need to include the resulting monetary value as part of a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) to aid project appraisal. -

Quinn, Middle Tennessee State University Highlights Basic-surplus field equations provide intrinsic structure of the economics part of ecological economics Discoverable and verifiable in facts and data obtainable from actual businesses small and large, banking, local and international finance Reveals that the circular-flow model is not explanatory Reveals that the contemporary notion of economic growth – “volume” – is fundamentally flawed Provides an economic theory that normatively is in support of ecological and cultural sustainability Abstract In the context of ecological economics, this paper provides an introduction to some technical aspects of a so far largely unknown (and in that sense new) view of how economies function. No mere model, it is explanatory of instances. It is discovered and verified in data and facts from actual businesses small and large, communities and ecologies, actual production and provision, credit, profit, and activities in the financial sector. The new view is accessible and, at the same time, remarkably reaching in its implications and its potential for further development. Among other things, it becomes obvious that the circular-flow model is, at best, superficial description. Rather, in any economy, there are five functions and two mutually dependent flows, basic and surplus. Also evident is that that contemporary measures of “economic growth” - “volume” - are fundamentally flawed. What is possible, instead, is economic progress that intrinsically is in support of ecological and cultural sustainability. Along the way, and in the Appendix, I make note of various topics, elaboration of which cannot fit into this article. -

The Origins of Ecological Economics: the Bioeconomics of Georgescu
The origins of ecological economics In recent years, an increasing awareness of resource and environmental issues has created a demand for ecological economics, and a growing interest in the work of Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen. This book connects Georgescu-Roegen’s earlier work on consumer choice theory and critique of the Leontief dynamic model with his later ambitious attempt to create a theoretical alternative to neoclassical economics, ‘bioeconomics’. The book includes detailed examinations of the following subjects: • Reformulating the consumer choice theory for environmental valuation. • Investigation on a Leontief dynamic model with two delays. • Measure of information and its relationship with entropy in physics. • Relations among energy analysis, Sraffa’s analysis and Georgescu-Roegen’s production model. • The viability of solar technology. • Economic and thermodynamic analysis of land since the Industrial Revolution. • Development, environmental degradation and North–South trade issues. • Robert Rosen’s modelling relation and the biophysical approach to sustain- ability issues. This work may serve as a source-book for research into solid theoretical bases and applications related to sustainability issues. It will prove essential reading for ecological economists, but will also be of interest to ecologists, economists and social theorists in general. Kozo Mayumi graduated from the Graduate School of Engineering, at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Physics of Kyoto University. Between 1984 and 1988 he studied under Professor Georgescu-Roegen. Mayumi is now a full professor at the University of Tokushima. His research interests include energy analysis, ecological economics and complex hierarchy theory. In 1999 he edited Bioeconomics and Sustainability: Essays in Honor of Nicholas Georgescu- Roegen, and he is currently an editorial board member of Ecological Economics and Population and Environment. -

We find that US wealth depends on a range of macroeconomic variables, including the wealth itself observed in the previous period, change in market capitalization, change in US house price index and inflation. Less impactful, statistically significant factors included unemployment, changes in oil price, and change in debt-to-GDP ratio. Another significant result is that the Glass–Steagall Act, which prohibited com- mercial banks from speculative activity in the stock market after 1933, had a statistically significant positive impact on wealth in the US. We test the model by asking whether it could have anticipated the actual collapse in 2008, given prior data up to 2000, 2005 and 2010. All three tests forecasted a sharp wealth decline starting in 2008, followed by a recovery. These results suggest the possibility of forecasting future financial collapses.
