It brings together the fields of performance stud ies, discourse analysis and theatre studies to document, contextualize, and analyze the events after the Los Angeles rebellion of 1992. It examines gang youth who turned to community activism to help maintain truce between former warring gangs; small comm unity - based organizations of mothers who worked to defend their incarcerated sons; and a variety of other groups that organized demonstrations, meetings, and gatherings to publicize the community’s opposition to brutal police practices, unjust court proced ures, and degrading media images. The dissertation also addresses the intersections between grassroots activism and the celebrated performance and video Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 by Anna Deavere Smith™. Together, activists and performers developed new counter -public spaces and compelling counter -narratives that confronted the extremely negative media representations of the Los Angeles rebellion. In these spaces and narratives, t he activists/performers nurtured and developed their oppositional identities and interests, often despite dire economic conditions and social dislocations.

    MAY 2014 WELCOME A few weeks ago, on April 30, 2014, the American the- atre lost a giant, and The Old Globe lost one of its most valued friends. Nicholas Martin’s relationship with this institution began when he acted here in King Lear in 1957, and it continues to this day as we present Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike in a production based on his original Broadway direction. The fifty seven year span of his Globe career saw him act in eighteen additional productions and direct six, most recently his acclaimed 2013 staging of Shaw’s Pygmalion. On the opening night of that production the Globe named him an Associate DOUG GATES Artist, an honor that he was as proud to earn as we were Managing Director Michael G. Murphy and Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. to bestow. Nicky, as he was known, loved San Diego and adored the Globe, but the Globe loved him more. At every level of the institution, from artists to staff to Board, he was cherished. He was an uproari- ously funny man with a room-filling laugh and a bright twinkle in his eye. His wit was scintillat- ing, and although it could be withering, too, it was never, ever mean-spirited. Nicky was a man of the theatre in the deepest sense: every single part of the process of making theatre thrilled him. His manner in rehearsal was always gentle and open-hearted, and he was fiercely devoted to his artistic collaborators and their work. He was a generous mentor of emerging talent and a loyal supporter of longtime colleagues.

C. Handy, the African American leader of a dance orchestra, got stuck one night waiting for a train in the hamlet of Tutwiler, Mississippi. With hours to kill and nowhere else to go, Handy fell asleep at the empty depot on a hard wooden bench. When he woke, a ragged black man was sitting next to him, singing about “goin’ where the Southern cross the Dog” and sliding a knife against the strings of a guitar. The musician repeated the line three times and answered it with his guitar. Intrigued, Handy asked what the line meant. It turned out that the tracks of the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad, which locals called the Yellow Dog, crossed the tracks of the Southern Railroad in the town of Moorehead, where the musician was headed, and he’d put it into a song.

A Letter from the President Fall 2012 Dear Subscriber, This year we are pleased to add over 85 works to our Catalogue, including both full length and short plays, from our new and established authors. We were particularly fortunate with nominations and awards that our authors won this year. Quiara Alegría Hudes won the Pulitzer Prize with WATER BY THE SPOONFUL, and the two runners-up were John Robin Baitz’s OTHER DESERT CITIES and Stephen Karam’s SONS OF THE PROPHET. The Play Service also represents three of the four 2012 Tony nominees for Best Play, including the winner, Bruce Norris’ CLYBOURNE PARK, Jon Robin Baitz’s OTHER DESERT CITIES and David Ives’ VENUS IN FUR. All four of the Tony nominations for Best Revival are represented by the Play Service: DEATH OF A SALESMAN (the winner), THE BEST MAN, MASTER CLASS and WIT. Other new titles include Rajiv Joseph’s BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO, David Henry Hwang’s CHINGLISH, Katori Hall’s THE MOUNTAINTOP, Nina Raines’ TRIBES and Paul Weitz’s LONELY, I’M NOT. Newcomers to our Catalogue include Simon Levy, whose masterful adaptation of THE GREAT GATSBY is the only stage version to be authorized by the Fitzgerald Estate; Erika Sheffer, with her vivid portrait of an immigrant family in RUSSIAN TRANSPORT; Sarah Treem, with her absorbing and thought-provoking THE HOW AND THE WHY; and Tarell Alvin McCraney, with the three plays of his critically acclaimed BROTHER/SISTER TRILOGY.
