SitRep No 2 – Earthquake 29 -05- 2009 UN Disaster Management Team/UN Emergency Technical team (UNETE) 28-05-2009

A. Background

Description of the Events: A 7.1 grades earthquake occurred on may 28 at 2:24-06 hour of local time (8:24 GMT). The epicenter was located 10 Km depth at17.011°N, 86.237°W, near to the Roatan Island in the Atlantic coast of Honduras. There have been numerous smaller aftershock (see map).

B. CURRENT SITUATION

In addition Hondutel (National Telephone company) confirmed that Cable Maya (optical fiber)is out of service for long. This implied a reduce internet service mainly in north coast and other places into the country The damages on Ulua River Bridge is seriously affecting the transport of good and people in the Sula Valley, one of the most productive areas in the country. Government authorities are working to install a Bailey bridge into the missing part of the Ulua River Bridge.

C. SITUATION REPORT ACCORDING TO SECTORS

 WFP monitors, in coordination with COPECO, CODEM (Municipality emergency Committee) and other partners are charring out assessments of damages.

 UNICEF coordinated with National Authority for Water System (SANAA) Regional Office to obtain information on damages to the water supply systems at , Ceiba, and Occidental, the most affected region. SANAA has obtained preliminary reports from the urban areas of the affected region; however, the information from rural areas has not been obtained so far. A technical staff of SANAA Regional Office is currently in the rural area of El Progreso to assess the situation. No major damage to the water system was reported.

 UNICEF coordinated with Water for People, our partner NGO, to collect the preliminary information on the damaged caused to water systems at . A technical staff is in the field and will bring detailed information.

 UNICEF Health Specialist had a meeting with Ministry of Health staff and received confirmation on the damage caused at two hospitals, 1) at Municipality of in Cortes, and 2) Catarino Rivas Hospital in San Pedro Sula.

 FAO and agriculture ministry are making an assessment damages in irrigation systems

 UNDP in cooperation with COSUDE continued with the assessment of potential landslide in central district

D. ONGOING ACTIONS

No further update unless there is a major change of event.

E. REQUIREMENTS

The government has not requested Humanitarian Assistance from the UN System.
